As much as I dislike this project, it looks like GRG has finally started work on the Ward Burg Garden.

Interesting article from KMOX. Looks like the developers of those Landing projects will be launching an investment fund to rescue projects hitting a wall during the crisis.

Now this is something to be excited about.  I wonder where they will end up, I assume Mas Tequila isn't going anywhere (I hope)

From name alone this concept has a lot more legs than Miss Java, which at this point I am assuming isn't happening.

Edit: According to Facebook they are located at 801-805 N. 2nd

Correct - It's owned by one of the partners behind New Legacy Development Partners, the group behind the recent revitalization efforts of the Landing plus other projects.  They're really going to make some waves here soon.  That N 2nd St. address is their office I believe.

Are they ditching cobblestones on 2nd now too? Also there is some activity inside the future Old Judge coffee space

At some point, if they aren't going to recobble them properly, might as well watch them go and implement some other traffic calming measures.  What's the cost difference of recobbling versus basic paving?

Other than the city's history? 😉

I wish they would all be recobbled properly and we wouldn't even have to have the debate.  Not sure who is going to bankroll that vanity project though.

I don’t mind gobble stone road for historic purposes but we also have to meet today’s standards...ie getting a wheelchair across an intersection over gobble stones can be tricky. With that said I propose a concrete strip from one ramp to other or make the entire intersection a square concrete block

Cobblestones laid properly can be totally flat and just as safe as concrete

It may be able to be laid totally flat but it also has to meet slip-resistance per IBC. Kiener Plaza is a good example of granite being laid totally flat but it took them time to get it to pass slip resistance coefficients. I agree with the idea of concrete intersections and cobblestone streets.

I don't think the original granite cobblestone, even if perfectly laid, can ever achieve true flatness. Stones are just too big and rounded. With that being said, while walking the landing last week, they were loading these giant cobblestones into a dumptruck to be taken off site.

If we are ditching the historic stones, I would like to see us try to retain the cobblestone look, albeit with a flatter and more modern stone such as the bricks of Collins St. or Commercial Alley. They seem to have held up pretty well despite being laid decades ago.

On a personal note, I need to find out where these granite stones are going. Looking to build a sweet firepit in my backyard.

BPS site is disabled and I can’t find any of the bid documents on SLDC, but it probably has something to do with this:

^ Nice!  This is part of a larger renovation with apartments, right?  Or at least for multiple buildings.  Good to see the Landing getting some TLC.  When I was in my early 20s, we would go to Morgan Street, Big Daddy's, Heartbreakers, Big Bang, etc.  I think there are only a couple of them remaining.  I know last 4th of July (or maybe 2018?), we walked to the Landing after watching the fireworks at Fair St. Louis, and wow it was jarring to see the difference in person.  And I'm only in my early 30s, so it's not like it's been 20+ years since I've been down there.

Development on those two giant parking lots would do wonders, but then again I'm sure people will complain about the parking.  Between those two and the lot for Hotel Lumiere/the Casino/Four Seasons, there's just too much surface-level parking for an area of that size.  Then again, this IS St. Louis. 😅

The thing is, the Landing really isn't that far away from becoming a vibrant destination again. It's a pretty small area geographically that could fill in fast given the right conditions. The Landing is about 5-6 businesses away from losing its status as a civic embarrassment, maybe 10 businesses away from becoming the civic asset it used to be.

Assuming the virus receeds and tourism returns to some form of normalcy, the Landing could be poised to see the beginning of its rebirth in summer 2021.
  • All of the messy infrastructure work will hopefully be wrapped up by then
  • Ward Burg Garden will be finished
  • Old Judge Coffee opening on 2nd street
  • Hopefully Rum Jungle and Hoffman Bro's renos will be well underway
  • 810 Lounge in the former aquarium building will hopefully be open at last
That's just what is already in motion.

^ Nice!  Looks like they're going with flatter surface for the crosswalks and the intersection square, but good to hear about the cobblestone.  I can't remember if it was still in on the streets running east & west?

Any hope they will lay more flat? I don't really care myself because I park Downtown and walk it whenever I go down there.  But it at least addresses one of the grievances most people have about going down there.
