This is really good news. From MayorSlay.com...

Metropolitan Design is proposing the $11.7 million renovation of the Laclede Power House Building, formerly owned by TrailNet. Metropolitan would move its companies, now located in Maplewood, to the building, and TrailNet would realize both its original desire for offices in the building and the use of the building as a trailhead for the riverfront bike trail. If it is built, the trailhead structure is expected to include a bicycle sales and repair shop. In addition, Metropolitan is proposing a concert venue and restaurant in the 75,000 sq. ft. space. If the developers are able to secure commitments for the concert venue and restaurant in time for the scheduled public hearing, the development could be approved for a TIF of up to $2.2 million.

No. That building is still in use. This is a little triangular building across the street. Behind Al's.

No. Unless there are two buildings in play that I don't know about. I'm pretty sure UE (Laclede?) still uses that building.

Wow, this is great news (the St. Louis project). Another mid-sized business moving Downtown. Another awsome building put back to use. Another link in the Riverfront Trail.

Just got done with a great ride from downtown to the Chain of Rocks Bridge. Why does the wind always blow from the south? Better question, why do I never think of it as I'm riding north?

Bigger issue, not much progress has been made with the Laclede Building "trailhead". Any news?

Hi, does anyone know the history of this building at the southern end of the Riverfront Trail?

A spark on north riverfront

By Christopher Boyce

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

07/03/2009

ST. LOUIS — The barren blocks along downtown's north riverfront offer little to suggest redevelopment is just around the corner.

The Laclede Power building, the signature building in the area, has been vacant since the 1970s, when it was last used as an electric distribution facility. Surrounded by abandoned brick structures and empty lots, this section of riverfront is almost barren of human traffic.

And yet, modest reinvestment is under way.

As I blogged yesterday, this part of the article is ridiculous:

Some developers, however, are skeptical that the historically desolate area is ready for a quick revival. They cite the recession's impact on investment capital, access issues into the area and previous failed ventures.

After all, it's not as though similar projects haven't been tried in downtown, said Jeffrey Hawley, president of Block Hawley Commercial Real Estate Services in Chesterfield. St. Louis Centre, for example, which opened with great fanfare in 1985, is now shuttered. And Union Station, also remodeled with great hype, continues to struggle.

Meanwhile, more recent initiatives such as the Bottle District and Ballpark Village are not dead, but they have been delayed and still aren't off the ground.

"People have been trying to do something there for a long time," Hawley said. "You've got to grow it over years. You don't just go in, plant a seed and the next day find a million people living downtown."

Bob Cassilly has been working on the park next to the Laclede Power Building. You have to give it to him. He gets stuff done.

However I hate the fact that the bike path through this park is gravel, many times its too muddy to ride though. I wish they would pave it.
