Well that would be a great spot to redevelop, not going to lie - If they are not interested in reopening a store in the CWE it would suck. That meat and seafood counter is unmatched. The grocery business is tough, margins are super thin.

I think they are fishing the possibilities. Maybe they catch a high rise developer. The site is roughly 35,000 sq ft. ($100 sf).

Maybe they work with a developer to be a part of its podium.

This site does not fall under the form based code. I imagine you could get away with a Citizen Park sized building on that site. Not a bad size.

Straub's is not emptying shelves, btw. they had a power outage, so they had to remove everything from the freezers. (Everything is back now).

Staff and management said they are open for the foreseeable future.

Thanks @dylank for more accurate information. Nice to not hear a bunch of speculation. I was a cashier at Straub's as a teenage. It was a convenient job that I could walk to when I was 16 years old and saving to purchase my first car. Land value has continued to increase in the area and this is a prime redevelopment site for higher land use/productivity. Ideally, a new developer would build a 15 story or greater building with street level retail for Straub's to return and operate.

I knew about the freezer issue, net is that they are slowly reducing inventory. I’m in there every other day. Really hoping they stay, they will have a lot of new customers when the Albion opens. Does anyone know the max height allowed on that lot?

This is such a bummer…. From Biz Journal:

Straub's Markets plans to close its Central West End location later this month, the local grocery chain announced Tuesday.
The store at 302 N. Kingshighway Blvd. is scheduled to stay open through Sept. 25, or until its remaining inventory is sold.

Sucks but not surprising given the Whole Foods and Fresh Thyme. Unless you’re looking for like veal or something, not much reason to go to Straub’s over Whole Foods. Also, location isn’t great.

What does the CWE code allow on this lot? Seems like a great lot and opportunity to extend the growing CWE skyline.
