Noticed this morning Duncan is closed from Vandevneter, light prep work going on. A small excavator was knocking down trees by I-64, plus a small front loader was knocking down a chain-link fence, and a bunch of SM Wilson guys talking.

^ I just saw yesterday that IKEA is putting up the large solar array on the roof of its new KC area store.... I believe it will be the largest array in the entire state of Kansas. Would be kind of cool to have the same here. I also wonder if they are planning to do the geothermal heating here. Maybe even put up a few wind turbines in the back lot by 64/40.

^now that would be incredible; the solar panels would be great!!!

^ here is an overview of the solar and geothermal projects for the Merriam, KS location.... pretty impressive!

Interesting comment from the Brentwood mayor.

EDIT: looks to be six for the entire chain.
-The first one in North America (Nova Scotia) closed because of lack of support in the early 80's.
-1 in Poland and 1 in Slovakia. I think those stores opened right after the iron curtain came down and they later relocated to newer bigger stores.
-1 each in the Netherlands, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Those seemed to be older, smaller 1970's era stores that relocated to new bigger modern stores in the 90's and 2000's.

Just asking: how many IKEAs have closed? (World and US) I couldn't find anything. While talking about development, Kelly said IKEA originally wanted to build in St. Louis on 27 acres in Hanley Industrial Court. He said Brentwood turned them down.
“If you guys (IKEA) aren’t successful and leave, what would we do with that building? That’s the mistake that some communities make. They’ll put all their money into one pot, like one retailer, and I think that’s a mistake,” Kelly said. “A big part of our success has been our location, but we also made sure we had diverse stores.”

^ "[Mayor] Kelly began with a 20-minute self-described “rant” against Better Together St. Louis, a group that promotes unifying St. Louis City and the municipalities of the county. He said a new report is due out from the group, and called it another initiative to take control away from municipalities. “It’s a good idea if you’re in control when it’s over,” he said."
Let the shovels turn:

Great news. I am now waiting for the updated and urban-scale Midtown Station renderings.

He doesn't care if the report finds a way to make things better for the PEOPLE of St. Louis. He's looking out for his own job and interests, not ours. He's shaking in his little boots that someone else could take control later.roger wyoming II wrote:^ "[Mayor] Kelly began with a 20-minute self-described “rant” against Better Together St. Louis, a group that promotes unifying St. Louis City and the municipalities of the county. But 90 municipalities is too much. We should have 10 at the most. One I have thought about is if Mid-County were one muni, 52 sq. mi. with a pop. of 185,000. That's a real, dense, city right there, largely with urban form, and complete with two light-rails, a streetcar, and a skyline of high-rises.

This is so exciting. That whole area is changing before our eyes.. Here comes another crane!

^ A Sexy Swedish Crane(s)! I was at Cortex today for a meeting and the view of the 4240 Building and work on the Cortex Commons was pretty sweet.... especially knowing that this is just the beginning!
Saint Louis sure has a fascinating history:

work has stopped (I'm sure just temporarily) due to tomb found from old cemetery.

Dead people will be shopping in IKEA, eating meatballs and hotdogs once it closes at night.

There has been at least one other tomb found in that vicinity in recent history. Late 80's or early 90's, they found a cast iron casket near the grain elevator. I don't know who "they" were, but they were digging.
This is funny—people were making all sorts of jokes on STLToday.
With locations in Poland, Germany, Hungary, Russia, Belgium, Romania, Lithuania—believe me, I'm pretty sure these are not the first bones unearthed building an IKEA. And many still clutching pikes and muskets.
Actually, this is probably the paltriest, most disappointing set of bones found yet.

The medical examiner's office has confirmed that the bones found at the St. Louis Ikea excavation site were not those of an 1850s cholera victim. Forensics investigations suggest the death was stress related...

Looks like our soon to be built IKEA just might get a geothermal system which will be great!

I've heard about Rock Springs Cemetery for years and this is a fascinating topic. The Ray Carroll Grain Elevator was formerly owned by the defunct Wabash Railroad. When the Wabash merged with Norfolk and Western Railway in '64 it was theirs until the early 90's.

Groundbreaking is tomorrow. Channel 5 had a brief story and then followed up with a longer one on how IKEA is just one of many construction projects transforming the city.... I'll post a link if they put it up.
It was pretty good, with the Citywalk, Zoo expansion, Mercedes and Shriner's projects mentioned as examples as well as the recently completed Cortona.
They had Les Toenges on of the construction trades and he said we appear to be just in the beginning of the greatest wave of construction since the 1960s... said it's kind of like being in the second inning of the game and in five years the city will look much different than it did two years ago.

^ Thanks.... I created a Saint Louis Building Boom thread on the subject.
We can all breathe a big sigh of relief. Ground has officially be broken at IKEA. There's no going back now!

I won't believe it until I'm literally sitting in the cafeteria with Swedish meatballs in my mouth.
