Got invited to the soft opening so I guess I'm going to check this place out with the wife on Saturday morning and try my first Swedish meatball.

they made down to just north of Manchester/Chouteau... they really need to go down to at least Tower Grove Ave as S. Vandeventer is still a lunarscape north of there but at least the immediate area around IKEA is baby bottomed.

I saw this notification today about how they plan to handle all the people coming in:

IKEA has hired a company to insure traffic flows into and out of their lot as directed. The main change during Opening Day and following weekends will be that southbound Vandeventer must turn westbound onto Forest Park Avenue so that the new IKEA signal light does not back up. Shuttles will also be running to and from the store from remote parking areas.

Its interesting is how different this IKEA is compared to most other US stores based on location. The only similar type store is their store in Atlanta in a very similar development area along a similar corridor.

^The New Haven location is pretty similar - right near the heart of the city, but in a somewhat industrial stretch next to the main highway.

The Tampa IKEA is also somewhat similar in their location by Ybor City and not far from their downtown

The grain elevators should do tours like the Compton Hill water tower has.

Heard that IKEA tried to do some graphics on the grain elevator for their grand opening this week, but they couldn't get approval from the owner.

Made it through the store and survived. Quick thoughts:
-busy but nothing crazy. Got lucky and parked like 15 spots from the front door. Traffic is fine on Venderventer and FPP.
-tons of SLU students walking over from the campus.
-lots of lookers. But also plenty of people with one or more carts overflowing.
-not much going on in the larger item stock area towards the end and the corresponding loading up front. Few people are buying shelving, beds and desks yet.
-cafeteria was nuts and had a line to get in. (I didn't eat.)
-the view from the cafeteria windows are impressive but would look so much better with bigger buildings. But in a way embraces the grittiness of our city as well as it's potential
-an irritating number people working the store backwards and going against the flow. IKEA virgins I assume.
-seem to be fewer short cuts than other IKEAs
-cops cops cops and more cops everywhere. Reminded me of the police presence for the MLB All Star game.

I haven't confirmed it. But a friend said on Facebook they're using the old Forest Park Hospital parking garage in Dogtown as one of the overflow lots.

It sounds like Saturday was many times busier than today. On Saturday it was was shoulder to shoulder, chest to back the entire way through.

The view from the restaurant is awesome!

I wish Cortex would have kept that rather handsome and sizeable older building across the street until they started working on whatever it is they plan to build on the site.

Has to be one of the most urban IKEAs in the United States.

Of course, IKEA denied the rumors and said their expansion plans are nearly finalized through 2008...

Martin Van Der Werf also reported that Ted Geiger is talking with building owners on Washington Avenue and in the Central West End about putting Java Plus in building lobbies. His first Java Plus opened in the Interco Tower at 101 South Hanley Road in Clayton. In addition to serving coffee, soft drinks, packaged sandwiches and snacks, Java Plus also serves salads from Geiger's Fuzio Universal Pasta franchise.
10 years, 9 months, 22 days from rumor to opening - I love this town, but progress here is measured in decades not years, Van Der Werf has been gone from the Post for what seems like forever
