no longer a rumor... closing on the 17th. More density can't come to Grand Center soon enough.roger wyoming II wrote:Also, just spreading rumor, but I saw a comment somewhere... maybe at nextstl... that the Dooley's owners were surprised by slow business and lack of SLU customers and may be giving it another year before closing if things don't change.

STL Mag has a couple good articles on progress in Grand Center:
The upcoming Curtain Call Lounge:

And the new Marcel Theater:

that last story also notes the plans for the Bull Moose HQ and hotel for the Missouri Theater Building as well as this...
"There are plans to construct a new apartment building nearby, with a projected completion date of 2017."

Curtain Call Lounge sounds like a place I'll have to check out next time I'm home. This is my chance to wear a fedora without feeling like a hipster.

Presby also brings the news that the City is having an RFP out for redevelopment in northernmost Grand Center along Grand b/w Cook and Page and then west down Page to Spring.... something like the North Sarah mixed-use project would be awesome.
More info on the plans for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters rooftop venue:
http://www.stltoday.com/business/local/ ... b5a76.html
plans include a first-floor restaruant/bar with entrance on Grand and an elevator up to the rooftop.
The article also revealed that the Woolworth's building originally was intended to be a 20 story tower. That would have been awesome.

^ Is it really a done deal. I believe the PD article states that funding is in part from New Markets Tax credit app that hasn't approved yet. Note key word - hopeful
Now the project is poised to get underway. Some financing for the $5 million project would come from federal New Markets Tax credits yielding about $1.2 million. James-Hatter is hopeful the city is about to allocate the federal tax credits to the Big Brothers Big Sisters project. She said her organization had already raised $2.5 million in donations for the project.

Bad news about Dooley's. I really liked their bison burger and pub cheese toppings.
It did feel distant, however, despite what at the time of opening seemed like a good location. I'd like to hear a SLU undergrad's take on the barriers to supporting Grand Center's businesses. Does the City Diner do ok?
Just my two sense, but the British Pub feel in Dooley's was kind of half-baked. If I recall, the menu had a more proper delivery than the vinyl booths, university banners, tile floor, and a backdoor take-out entrance that felt very under age college bar. I think if I were trying to deliver it again I'd make it smaller with a more formal appearance and uniform decor. With a better ambiance and location, like in the McPherson/Euclid area of CWE, or play off of the Cheshire vibe in Demun, I feel like they'd do well. Maybe I'm overrating their burger and being too optimistic about their product.

Farewell Dooley's, Hello LoRusso's on Grand. I think a good Italian restaurant might be just what is needed to work in that for-whatever-reason difficult spot.
Is this something that's actually happening?roger wyoming II wrote:Farewell Dooley's, Hello LoRusso's on Grand. I think a good Italian restaurant might be just what is needed to work in that for-whatever-reason difficult spot.
Awesome! Thanks. And I assume/hope it's expansion and not relocation?roger wyoming II wrote:^ yes.

Yes.... but I believe at least for now it will only be open on show nights. Of course, this time of year that means just about every day. I think the new Fox spot will also open very soon.
"Curtain Call Lounge" now open next to the Fox Theater:

Steel framing has begun on the rooftop venue at the Big Brothers Building.
Miss M's Candy Boutique is opening in the Metropolitan Artist Lofts building at Grand and Olive on May 1st. This will be their second location; they've had a store in The Loop since 2010.
