I'd like to think that the plan isn't to have a passageway between the Sheldon and a surface parking lot. Hopefully this means a garage or other infill is coming soon.

dredger wrote:^ Isn't there also a parking structure deal in the works that might lead to some additional residential infill separate from the latest proposal referenced in the article.

It gets pretty impressive if you add a couple of projects that have been proposed an or supposedly in the works not noted in the article. Still nice to see a positive article put out there.
Good question on where things stand with some of the larger proposed projects in GC.... I believe it was late '13 when the P-D ran a story that Lawrence Group should have been done with the Missouri Theater's commercial portion this fall and the residential portion including a garage completed in '15. (A second phase infill project would then possibly follow.) It also said that for the other side of Grand, Grand Center, Inc. was considering constructing a garage with first floor retail on one of the surface lots and that if it decided to pull the trigger on that it should have been completed by the end of this fall.

So definitely some delays but hopefully still moving forward. Alex at nextstl said he thought Missouri Theater was still going to get done. I think it also is a bit of a mystery as to what is planned for the Grandel.

There's also murmurings about something stirring on the north side of Olive between Vandeventer and Spring.

I believe the walkway goes from the Sheldon to Public Media Commons, which the Sheldon basically backs up to.

It will go along the west side of the Sheldon and then down Washington so that surface lot is in play...

The surface lot GCI is/was looking at to put in a mixed-use garage is across the street but as you say infill should go in here as well... my proposal includes a side beer garden overlooking the Art Walk!

PostOct 03, 2014#406

^ oh wow, looking at that rendering some more I notice the triangular lot across Spring is labelled as the Spring/Olive Gateway Park.... this is the parcel that houses the auto body shop that was the source of a lot of controversy a few years back when Grand Center wanted to use eminent domain and put in the Media Box or whatever it was called. Perhaps they have an agreement now with the owners to purchase the property.

^ Its a nice plan but I think it might be missing some opportunities...

I'd like to see the Art walk cut north south through the currently surface parking lot all the way at least to Grandel and IMHO all the way to Enright instead of turning and following Washington to Spring and then north. It would create better pedestrian connection within the neighborhood and make those part of GC more attractive to development.

The mixed Use Garage should fill most of the space between the Art Walk and University Plaza Building except for a bookend building fronting the Art Walk, opposite the Sheldon, and should have the capacity to replace ALL surface parking between Grand and Spring south of Enright by a factor of at least two. After that infill, infill infill, no surface lot is safe.

^ well of course CAM & Pulitzer wants to be part of it so of course the obvious solution is an ART WALK Loop. btw, I'd like to see a t-shirt with that "No Surface Lot is Safe" message!

Went to the Dark Room in Grand Center recently. Try it out if you are looking for some live music but don't want to pay to go to an event. Great music and sophisticated vibe. Owner has a great ear for music.

Here's an RFT review of Lucha, the new Mexican restaurant at the spot where Kota most recently was...

http://blogs.riverfronttimes.com/gutche ... review.php

It is not your traditional American Mexican restaurant, but rather it is "Mexican Soul Food." I think when the "Mediterranean" Street Food joint opens downtown I'll make a day of the two!

Also, just spreading rumor, but I saw a comment somewhere... maybe at nextstl... that the Dooley's owners were surprised by slow business and lack of SLU customers and may be giving it another year before closing if things don't change.

EDIT: and a good review of the sushi spot Baiku in the Hotel Ignacio:

Anyone know if work on the Missouri Theater Building looks like it is moving along? Anyone hear more about the potential parking garage?

Workers are in the building daily. I guess they're still in the demo stage.

^ thanks.... yeah, they haven't applied for the building permit yet but hopefully they'll be able to move forward on that soon. Glad to hear work appears to be progressing; it would be great to get the retail portion up and running by the fall season but probably not.

New multi-date music festival coming to Grand Center:

http://www.stltoday.com/entertainment/m ... a5fe8.html

PostJun 13, 2015#421

Just got this invite, and thought I'd share some of it (sorry, not sure if it's open to the public, so I can't share the time or place):

"Please join colleagues and neighbors on Thursday, June 18, ......... to hear about an exciting addition to Grand Center!

Steve Smith will be announcing a major new tenant in the soon to be redeveloped Missouri Theater Building. Mayor Francis Slay, Alderwoman Marlene Davis, and State Senator Jamelah Nasheed will be in attendance, and Governor Jay Nixon is expected as well.

Refreshments will be served and we will celebrate another step forward toward our goal of making Grand Center an international destination
!"

Sounds like good news!

^ I wonder if it will be the B.B. Kings location. It sure will draw from a large area and be a go to for many tourist (domestic and international), especially since he has recently passed. Either way it must be a big deal, because Jay Nixon will be present.

Whatever it is, we shouldn't allow it without a vote of the public if public funded sidewalks lead to it.

Sounds like good news!
I bolded the tell; that's right, an IHOP is coming! More seriously, it is nice to see something getting finalized and hopefully this can speed up the project and especially the residential units.

Grand Center also has some streetscaping work on Washington from Grand to the Sheldon moving forward as part of the Great Streets project and they have a re-zoning permit in to allow a parking garage on a current surface lot also on Washington across from the Sheldon. I'm still looking forward to hearing about Grandel Theater plans and hope the Palladium gets a new use. Other than that, there's just a few smaller buildings around to take care of and who knows, we may see some nice residential infill!
