Agreed. And I am a hater of chain restaurants. This past summer at home, I resolved to only eat at local places, even though my family hated it. The problem is, I wouldn't know how to contact a random person who is looking to open up a local restaurant, and I am sick of the empty spaces around SLU. I think that Panera would be excellent, as well as a 24-hour Steak n' Shake and a Buffalo Wild Wings. Again, I would LOVE for local places to come in, but figure that if just one more restaurant is filled, maybe others will follow. It's worth a shot...

I have nothing but love for Panera, and Steak N Shake is great but they won't open up without a drive thru. BWW is way too corporate for my liking, but i've had some good times there i guess. You make a good point, I wonder what the hold up is in GC.

Speaking of restaurants, any news on the restaurant that was supposed to open in the Big Brother/Big Sisters Building?

But the to-do list at Grand Center still has plenty of projects that Schoemehl wants to finish over the next five years or so. The top priority is the renovation of four historic buildings:

* the Missouri Theatre, opened in 1921 with a theater that's long-gone

* the nearby 101-year-old Metropolitan

* the so-called Beaux Arts, a late 1920s structure built for the Knights of Pythias organization just west of Powell

* the Sun Theatre, built in 1913 as the Victoria

Then, Schoemehl says, he'd like one or ideally two 500-car parking garages "so we can begin to roll up the asphalt lots and make Grand Center more pedestrian friendly and a destination district." With two garages, he says, "you could free up about about five acres of parking lot use that could be used for new development."

"And," he adds, "we need to get more housing."

If they could do this then I would be very happy. More housing on Grandel seems obvious.

Though they would need to prevent SLU from doing more demolitions.

What is this new and different Grand Center and what have they done with the one that's been in place the last thirty years or so?

Grand Center is just about at that point of critical mass where big projects will become easier to attract and finance. They've come a long way in the last ten years, even if the progress isn't as visible (or fast) as we'd like.

Now all we've got to do is fix the stinking economy.

I also now have to wonder about security in the area.

We went to a gallery opening last night, one of two in the area, and Chorus Line had another thousand or so people at the Fox. Parked on a meter in front of Channel 9 at 6:30 p.m.

By 7:30, still light out, someone had punched the lock on our driver's side door, broken into the glove compartment and opened the trunk. This on a well-traveled street, in front of business that still had employees in it, in broad daylight.

We waved down a cop; I did not see any private security patroling the area.

Stuff happens, of course. But stuff like this, if prevalent, isn't going to hasten the already glacial pace of Grand Center redevelopment.

Sucks. Hope they didn't take anything irreplaceable. Gotta say the brazenness of busting into a car in broad daylight really is something, especially with so many people around at events, including SLU end-of-the-year related events.

Perhaps they were seeking the as-yet-published review of the new Spaghetteria - you know those I-talians!

I hear that two more restaurants are in the works for Grand Center (in addition to KOTA and City Diner). They both hope to open by this Fall. Maybe Bonwich knows more?

Not that many years back, my vehicle was broken into at 9:30 in the morning on the other side of a brick wall of an occupied fire house on S Grand. Fortunately, they left the antique pocket watch that was in a small envelope that had it's value written on it.

Pretty good article in Biz Journals noting that Grand Center secured $80 million in financing being used towards mutliple projects.

Article noted that the financing lays the ground work for the Missouri Theater Building and the proposed Hyatt with $3.2 million going towards that project, or what Grand Center paid to secure the building which it closed on June 30th. It also notes that $16 million in equity tax credits is lined up, Hyatt looking at $1.1 mil as part of its investment into the building, and developer has $6 million in. The only piece of the puzzle left is an $18 million construction loan.

The Fox is about to undergo a significant makeover which will extend to the Humboldt up the street:

Fox Theatre renovations
The most visible change to the public will be the creation of a Grand Boulevard façade that will be consistent across the frontage of the Fox Theatre and its adjacent buildings, including the Humboldt office building at the corner of Grand and Washington. New glass storefronts and decorative awnings will be installed, and a balcony will be added to the Humboldt building.

^Not lately. Grand Center has always said that it was close to happening, but the more recent silence makes me think otherwise.
