I would bet that Starbucks and Chipotle haven't been told they were moving in there yet.
This thing looked so much better before it was painted:

Hopefully Yackey's plans include stripping all the paint off and restoring the windows.

Update on STL Today:
The developers will preserve the round concrete roof and erect a mostly glass addition on the east side of the building to house Chipotle. Starbucks will use much of the original building, which will get new glass walls to reproduce the structure’s original see-through appearance. The businesses will seat about 100 people combined, plus 50 more on a patio beneath the saucer’s broad overhang. Starbucks will have a drive-thru window.

That's genuinely good news! I love this shot of the Saucer from an earlier STLToday story:

I hope they strip the paint off while they're at it...

A friend ran into Rick and said that construction will begin next week. Should be open for business in September. That place is going to be a hit. Line out the door noon to 3 AM everyday.

Of all the coffee and burrito joints in all the flying saucers... (you know, Rick...)

Drove by today, and the place has been completely gutted! Just the northern brick wall standing about 2/3rds up and then steal beams and the saucer roof. I assume glass will fill the empty spaces. Can't wait as I drive by this almost everyday in the fall...
The saucer is mentioned in today's New York Times:

If you just "do the math", there's a whole lot of freakin' sh!t that doesn't make sense economically. But don't worry, Rick will still be making a lot of money on this development (and largely by using our tax dollars via historic tax credits).Rather than build anew, the developer Richard K. Yackey will begin a $1 million renovation this month on the property, which has 3,200 square feet of usable space. The roof, which is 12,000 square feet, will cost $100,000 to replace. When construction is complete next year, the station will house a Chipotle restaurant and a Starbucks and have a 1,300 square feet addition.
“If you do the math, it doesn’t make a lot of sense economically,” Mr. Yackey said, adding that constructing a building on the property would have provided him with more space to lease.
Here's the official rendering (sorry for the poor quality). This is on display at The Flats management office, so check it out!

Thanks, Alex. I think the fluorescent lights on the underside of the overhang are a great accent to the building. It's a shame that they are apparently removing those altogether-- I would love to see some neon or LED lights in their place. Does anyone agree?
Is that blue along the edge lighting or paint? Not sure if anyone knows.
I just hope it's not more SLU blue neon lighting. The stuff on Locust doesn't look so hot in my opinion. Nice idea, but blue isn't a good color for the flexible neon.

^^ Agree stlgasm. I also don't like the blue. Maybe it's just me, but I think it's really hard on the eyes. Barnes-Jewish College of Nursing had the same blue up for some time and it was literally unreadable. The fleur-de-lis on the SLU building on S. Grand is really blurry for me too - though everything else is fine.
Disagree - I'm all about the clean look of the underside of the saucer.stlgasm wrote:Thanks, Alex. I think the fluorescent lights on the underside of the overhang are a great accent to the building. It lends the saucer to be a fine balance between its mid-century modern roots and a 21st-century, contemporary design.

I guess, and it looks good either way, but it was designed with lighting underneath:

I agree with stlgasm, I liked the fluorescent lighting on the underside more and I hope maybe they change their minds to keep it.
That said I like the new SLU blue neon lighting too. I like it pretty much everywhere I've seen it, on Olive, Locust, Laclede, and on the Doisy building.
As long as, like Alex said, it's not used to make words, because it does tend to look blurry and difficult to read.

Yeah, it just vibrates and hurts the eyes, also the light it casts isn't very flattering. It gives everything a kind of spooky glowI also don't like the blue. Maybe it's just me, but I think it's really hard on the eyes.
I also like the lights underneath, I like the way they direct my eyes towards the center of the structure.

^ I feel that there must be a pretty big segment of the population that can't stand the blue - like some sort of color blindness or something.
Oh, I don't know; I think a subtle blue glow cast on the rim by LED lights would look pretty cool. And it looks like the underside of the sauce will be lit by in-ground lights pointed upward based on that render - notice the spots of bright light near the pillars at the base.
If that's truly how it ends up, I'd be quite happy.

I'm with Geof on this one; I prefer the clean-look underside. And please no SLU Blue.
The building is looking great; I drove by it today and noticed that the windows were being put in. It looks really cool.
