Now Board President Reed is tweeting about talks w/ pi owners on a concept restaurant.... where does Yackey stand on all this?

As much as I love Pi, the neighborhood has enough pizza places. Plus, I don't want any more competition for The Good Pie.

The neighborhood has "a" pizza place. Right? The Good Pie and who else? I guess you can get a pizza from some of the bars in the area, but they're hardly "pizza places".

Who else serves pizzas, aside from Domino's and Pizza Hut several blocks down toward Schnucks? (fun fact: the Pizza Hut is closer, as the crow flies, to Pi CWE than to the Del Taco building)

Ah, bingo. I had a feeling I was forgetting something (and I'm pretty sure I've been to Vito's more times than I've been to The Good Pie). I suppose I don't consider it a "pizza place" as much as an "Italian place", though it's a thin line.

I'm not sure Pi fits into the Del Taco building anyhow, regardless of how many pizza places there are around -- it's awfully small for a sit-down place, for one thing. Although the tweet said "concept restaurant", so perhaps it would be a Pi concept that might work: Pi by the slice or something, and then you could even make use of the drive-thru.

Or you could go by its Chesterfield model, which has extremely limited seating and relies on pick-up (and delivery, I think, although I've never used it).

I'd wonder whether Pi in the CWE, Midtown and downtown might be oversaturation and/or too-rapid expansion.

Yackey is putting the demo on hold, while he explores options for re-use:

Although I would still be alright with it being demolished, I would like to express congratulations to all of you here who have campaigned hard for its preservation, especially Alex, the Vines brothers, and those others of you who have attended the alderman meetings and the "Save Our Saucer" rally.

If a viable alternative can truly be found, and it benefits the neighborhood (and especially my alma mater that surrounds it), then I'm for it.

Looks like the winds of change may be blowing a bit with respect to the way our local government takes care of things, after all. When people work together enough, good things eventually start to happen. So, again, I say: congratulations.

Is the building to big for a Ted Drewes or Fritz's? Would be a cool and unique location for either company. They could put some tables under the saucer.

The owner's looking into options to expand the saucer so it can accommodate a variety of uses.

^Er, wouldn't that spoil the unique form of the building? Isn't that what we're trying to save?

Not exactly. I think you could easily utilize more of that huge roof and enclose more interior space. The trick would be to make the enclosure very transparent ie, butt joint glazing or the like, so that the iconic saucer form is easily read.

^ I don't think that's the plan, as it would alter the form of the building. I'd expect the current form stay with an add-on to the east and/or north.

Some kind of public meeting is scheduled for this Wednesday, 6 PM at the saucer.

I could be wrong, but I don't expect any kind of announcement at the meeting. My understanding is that Yackey and Davis were pushed by the city to have a public process and that's what they're doing. Encouraging none-the-less.

Well, this is very encouraging. Sounds like Yackey is serious about saving and reusing the saucer:

Yackey hopes to have the Saucer redeveloped and open by March:

I prefer the all-glass look of the Space/Pi proposal to the brick-sided Yackey proposal.

The biggest development that I noticed in Pi's renderings was the at grade Forest Park Parkway/Grand Ave interchange. That would definitely get students to cross over more as the current underpass is deteriorating horribly! Make it at grade and replace the gas station with another modern/urban mixed use development and this corner would be a great transition into Grand Center!

On Saturday, Space Architects tweeted:

Lots of rumors, but giving the possibilities it's not easy to get excited about any national chains.

That strains credibility. The typical Applebees is 5,000sf and seats >200. And I can't see Applebees allowing a second franchise within a mile (8 city blocks, actually) of an existing Applebees.

There's heavy equipment tearing up the pavement under the overhang. Don't know what's up.

Is this definitely going to be an Applebee's? I haven't heard any final word on the matter.
