Well I have to disagree with you. I go past the new station every single day and it is a marked improvement over the old stations. Perhaps you should see it in person, or at least see a full picture of it before you declare it a turd.

I like it. Sure, ideally, I wish Union Station was still our train station, but I think this building is pretty cool and I like how it snakes around under 40. At least its clean and modern. I VAST improvement over the other two options.

Question:

In trains, planes and automobiles did they shoot the bus station scene at the old bus station?

where is my time machine again:

According to imdb.com, they filmed it in Wilmington, IL. The only St. Louis credits are given to Lambert.

I don't need to - I've seen the renderings. I saw them 3 years ago and I said they were crap then (back when some of you knew me under different auspices), and I see half finished pictures of it and I say its crap now. Dog turds may be an improvement over pig turds - but it's still a turd! Would it've been so hard to keep our standards high for this? I'm not asking union station to be revivied - but would something comprable to Champaign have been so hard? 4 stories, amtrak, local buses, office space, retail, and a 4th floor function room that's regularly used. Our presently (unless I've totally misread the plans, which is very possible) offers little more than a glorfied shelter and waiting station. This is what we've been waiting 30 years for?

Has it already been asked if this new hub will fit with Chouteau's Pond redevelopment? Seems like the South End would be under water.

I think its safe to say that with this actually built, and Chouteau's Lake YEARS away that Chouteau's Lake will fit in with THIS project and not vice versa.

I finally drove by this in the daylight yesterday, and I thought it looked *fantastic!* I love the multicolored glass used on the windows. A GIANT improvement!

I love it. One wish--

There was a canopy over the tracks (you know, a train shed) so passengers detraining won't have to walk through rain, sleet or st. louis summers. The Texas Eagle is a long train and passengers are now forced to go the full lenth to the ramps rather than a quick scurry to where the old Amshack was.

And, of course, the two of them crossing the Eads Bridge in the wrong direction.

Yep, a error in that movie. If I remember correctly, they flew from LGA-ICT (Wichita) then from Wichita they catch a train, but the train breaks down in near Jefferson City. Then they hop on a bus to STL, but whats odd is that the bus crosses the Eads bridge from the east heading west into downtown. Should've been the opposite, west to east from St. Charles into downtown. Though my favourite part of that movie is the part at Lambert...especially seeing the L-1011 landing as Steve Martin's character walking on the runway of a busy Lambert.

As for this facility I can't wait for it to open in April. :)

No. Although the building is almost finished, the tracks will not be ready for several months.

New train depot will open soon

Once escalators are working and the track extensions are finished in late spring, the Gateway Transportation Center will fill with bus and train passengers.

About two dozen Missouri legislators toured the new train and Greyhound depot near Scottrade Center on Monday and heard a pitch for more Amtrak funding — a $10.6 million request to improve on-time performance and ridership across the state.

Here's what's in the article...

The building, with its four train platforms and 10 bus bays, is set to open in early June. Legislators hope to figure out the future of Missouri Amtrak service before then.

I heard June for Amtrak(due to trackwork like PE said), but Greyhound is ready to move in sooner, likely April.

St. Louis Gets a Grand Central Station (Sort Of)

RIVERFRONT TIMES ST. LOUIS

Tue Mar 25, 2008 at 03:38:49 PM

On Friday nights or Saturday mornings in the wee small hours, you can usually find me down at the Amshack on 16th Street waiting for the late train from Chicago. Or, rather, waiting for one particular passenger to alight from said train. It's not an especially pleasant place to pass the time: It's cold and dreary with aggressively yellow lighting. It smells weird. There are puddles on the bathroom floor. Everyone sits stiffly, either because the seats are so uncomfortable or because they are afraid they will be mugged. I've spent happier hours waiting around hospital emergency rooms.

A farewell to Amshack -- almost. And I am not alone. In the words of Marc Magliari of Amtrak media relations, “We're looking forward to staging bulldozer races to knock down the existing Amshack.” (This is, according to Amtrak official Ray Lang, one of the funniest things ever said by an Amtrak employee.)

Which is why, despite all the grumblings about the inefficiency of Amtrak itself, the opening of the new Gateway Transportation Center just a few hundred yards east of the Amshack is anticipated with such joy. So much joy, in fact, that although the center is still not entirely finished, Amtrak invited state officials to travel on a special train from Jefferson City yesterday afternoon for a special preview of the new center. (It was supposed to be open by now, but when -- aside from yesterday when government officials were involved -- has Amtrak ever run on time?)

The $20 million Gateway Transportation Center is no Union Station, but it's a lovely space. In addition to Amtrak, it will host Greyhound, MetroLink and MetroBus. It has high ceilings, and the windows, although multicolored, let in lots of light. There are separate windows for ticketing and baggage. The chairs are comfortable enough. St. Louis comptroller Darlene Green, whose agency supervises the facility, has promised food concessions: Arch City Deli has already signed a contract and KFC and Pizza Hut Express are pending. Most important, the new center will have 24-hour security.

Didn't Union Station use to be the major rail hub for St. Louis. Why did this change in the first place, it would be awesome to pull into an active Union Station when you get off the Amtrak.

PostMar 26, 2008#371

Nevermind I read the wikipedia article

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Stat ... ._Louis%29

It would have been cool if the could have found a way to reroute the track to the renovated Union Station.

? Three restaurants for 2 train trips a day? Perhaps I'm missing something here: Do people have to cross through the station to get from bus to metrolink? If not, I don't believe people will go inside to get food unless the weather is bad - but then isn't there outdoor cover anyways?

^Don't forget the many more intercity bus trips per day. Such travelers may likely have less purchasing power per person than those on Amtrak, but their larger numbers can help support eating options. Besides, these restaurants are more likely fast-food or quick-casual, instead of sit-down dining.

I miss the Burger King that was in the old bus station on Broadway. The cliental weren’t the best but the food was cheap and accessible.
