First of all Wendy's couldn't have been that well run if they couldn't even pay their rent.

And, it was never clean and always disgusting. The AC rarely worked.

I imagine we will see new places in the Garage Mahal. It is my understanding that major retailers tend to prefer newer facilities to fixer-uppers.

Wow, that's kind of a surprise. It seems to do a pretty decent business. Maybe the fact that it gets little to no traffic for dinner and on the weekends has something to do with it.

ooh this place was bad. I'd go there sometimes when I had to hit up the "dollar' menu when things get tight. Everytime I'd get back to work I'd say "they should really just shut that Wendy's down". And then one day...gone.

That would probably be my guess too. And again, it might be poor management too. Who know what their expenses are.

Apparently a lot of Wendy's are closing. But I do know that the Chestnut Wendy's rented all of their equipment in addition to the space. Couldn't have been too cheap.

From what I have heard... that particular Wendy's owner had not paid the lease for over 2 months. Sad! Landlord's are not out to give tenants "free rides".

This place was trashy - as mentioned - and disgusting I will add.

I give it less than a year we will see another Wendy's and others opening. It's not like the CBD doesn't have tons of affordable places for lunch.

Lions Choice opened downtown around the corner from Wendy's and is a great location. I was thrilled to see them come downtown!

Probably has something to do with the downward movement of the big fast food chains. Wasn't it a year or so ago that McDonald's profits or stock price fell for the first time ever?

Having fast food options is important, IMO. A poorly run restaurant will get shutdown most times, so it's not surprising. I'm something of a Wendy's fan, but I'd much prefer a Chik-Fil-A, since my main reason for eating Wendy's is because their chicken tastes better than the other fast food places.

I think a Johnny Rockets or something like that would work well for families downtown. Most people don't think of Hooters as a family place. It's a pretty high profile location for events in Keiner Plaza. During the NCAA Final Four that Wendy's was the busiest place in town. I'd love an In-n-Out Burger but they are only on the West Coast.

Isn't there a Steak n Shake in downtown Indianapolis?

I think it would be great; especially if open 24 hours. Not like the Hampton SnS which goes drive thru only at night.

Johnny Rockets would work well for families, but a resturaunt in that location needs to appeal to the monday thru friday business crowd, as well. I'm all for a modest-priced sitdown place (Steak-n-Shake!) that would appeal to business workers on more of a budget than their executives, but the thought of sitting in Rockets and getting seranaded everytime "Staying Alive" comes on -- while I'm sitting their in a dress shirt and tie -- is just a little creepy.

I vote for Noodles & Co. There's supposed to be one opening somewhere in South County... I assume near the mall. Good stuff!

Noodles is on the outside of South County mall next to Applebe's (formerly Ruby Tuesday).

I have a cousin who works for Wendy's corporate in Columbus and he said a few months back that most of the Wendy's in the area would be closing soon as the franchisee was awful and the corporate office was not too thrilled with the franchisee's disinterest in upgrading their stores.

What about a Potbelly's Sandwich Shop??? It's quick and appeals to families. I've seen a few locations, including Normal IL, that has a Noodles & Co and Potbelly's attached in the same building. I realize the space might not be able to accomodate two stores, but if Noodles & Co. has tapped into the STL marked (South County) they may be willing to invest in DT as well.

Sounds like all the Wendy's in the St. Louis area are in trouble.

Downtown is definitely in need of recognizable fast food restaurants. I wouldn't base my living preference on it, but when scoping out downtown as a living place, I definitely noticed that I couldn't find a fast food restaurant that I recognized when just driving around. I know St. Louis pales in comparison to the size of Chicago, but I remember going there years ago and seeing one on every street corner downtown. I am an out of towner to St. Louis (though not for long, God willing!), and when I was checking out an apartment building in Soulard, I took notice of the availability of fast food restaurants. When I mentioned that on the South St. Louis residential dev. board, I just got a "yuck fast food makes me want to vomit" or something to the nature.

As far as being owned individually, that's only partially true; there are corporate-owned McDonald's. (Im a 3 year vet of Mickey D's, so I kind-of know some things about it :)). There are also McDonald's restaurants that are opened by corporate, and then dished off to a local management company (a management company that owns other McDonald's in the same locale). In other words, McDonald's Corp. sees a need for their restaurants in particular areas, opens one, and then has a local mgmt company take it over.

I would love to see more recognizable fast food restaurants by time I move in to the area. I don't always want to have a sit-down dinner or order delivery pizza. Some days I will want to stop off for a quick bite after work, or on lunch hour. Especially being from a small town, as fast food restaurants are all I know!

Juice, I agree with you on the fast food. As much as most of us prefer to have healthier food and to be waited on in a sit-down resturant, sometimes people don't have time or $$ for a sit-down meal. I'd like to see a few more fast food places in DT, as well.

It doesn't seem to list fast food places, but I'd recommend checking out Sauce Magazine http://www.saucemagazine.com/ for resturant locations and reviews in St. Louis.

there are several fast food restaurants downtown...Lion's Choice, Jimmy John's, Subway, etc. the downside is that they are usually only open for lunch for now at least.

youa re right that the "major brands" are absent, but I work in Clayton and there is absolutely NO fast food here...in the last 5 years McDonalds, Taco Bell and Arby's have all gone away. Taco Bell was replaced a year or so ago with a Krispy Keme which has now closed. Downtown seems similar in that regard except I would kill for a Lions Choice within walking distance.

Most fast food restaurants us a "formula" to determine if a franchise would be successful in a certain area...it takes into account the number of people who live and work in a certain area. For now downtown isnt quite there, but it will be...

I remember a time when downtown had 2 McDonalds...one of the riverboat and one downtown and that was when nobody lived downtown.
