Much loved Everest Cafe (1916 Washington) is likely moving from Downtown West to the Grove in Fall 2007. They have spraypainted the word "EVEREST! Fall 2007" on a boarded up building just across the street from Atomic Cowboy and After at Manchester and Talmage.

I am not 100% sure that they're not simply opening a new location, but my guess is that this is their new and only location.

If you've not yet tried Everest, you simply must. It's easily one of the best and most relazing places to eat in the city.

Would that be 4145 Manchester? That's the old storefront immediately east of Archway Chemical with the old metal canopy across its front.

True. Amy and Amrit Gill love the States and their wider project to cook great, fresh, affordable food. With construction planned for (and all around) their current Wash Ave site, the Grove seemed like a perfect fit for the States.

The new restaurant will likely continue the Nepali theme and keep the Everest name, but add more Korean dishes from Connie's trove of family recipes.

Any suggestions on how to describe the new cuisine? Neparean? Nepchee?

(Seriously, please help. :?: )

Or they could call it Repalese but pronounce it Nepalese. (How's that for an obscure transliteration joke?)

=D> I love the work of the Gills. The Grove already seems crowded at the eastern end of Manchester from Thursday-Saturday. There was a nice write-up about five recently and now some cheap eats are making their way in - a Chuy's, a pub, Everest Cafe - I wish Kaldi's or Kayaks would take a chance down here . . . .

everest cafe is great, and the owner is super friendly. i fell in love with the place late last year when i was interviewing for several jobs downtown.

semi off topic: a month or two ago on a really cold night, i was absolutely stunned by the amount of people in the grove...

Have we determined that it is actually moving and not opening a new location? I would really miss it presence downtown if it were to move :( It's a long walk from where I work but I do try to make it over there when possible. When I talked to the owner some time ago, she was optimistic about the development potential across the street in the neo-Pseudor-facade building.

^ Interesting.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Grove (if you haven't noticed) but how does this make sense. I've thought of businesses in the Grove as being on a trial run with some likely to fail. Downtown is certainly more of a crowded market (competition), but it seems like more of a sure bet. For all that's happening, I don't know that I would move my business from downtown to the Grove at this time. Perhaps they got some insight into what's next for the Grove. There's Everest, a new Chuy's (or am I misremembering?), a corner pub . . . but still . . . . I drove past the new location yesterday and it could be very cool, but I couldn't tell if it would be a single store front or if it was to use the attached building as well.

Everest is great. It's one of the few holdouts for casual fare on the otherwise trendy Washington Avenue corridor.

I hope the new location will prove to be a good move-- it is certainly a great asset for Forest Park Southeast!

(P.S.- I haven't warmed up to "The Grove"- not a big fan of the designation.)

I *KNEW* I had gotten it from somewhere, Joe -- but I kept thinking it was in relation to that other building on 10th and Locust so I couldn't place the reference

So, what has sparked all of this retail development in the Grove? It seems to be the BARS. Maybe someone should pass this information on to the Alderman who has blocked any attempt at allowing bars on Cherokee. Someone should also tell him to ditch his weirdo, square framed,child-molester glasses.

I like the name of the Grove rather than Forest Park southeast. Maybe as a compromise people can call the "strip" the Grove and the neighborhood itself FPSE. Similarly to the Loop.

The bars being full on many nights seems to have given others the confidence to move in here. The new light posts with integrated traffic radios have been installed along this stretch of Manchester as well. It will be interesting to see what the construction on 40 does to this area. FWIW - I like the Grove. Forest Park Southeast is a name that came to the neighborhood with the development corporation and not a historical name in any sense. The area has a few names, Adam's Grove, Gibson Heights to name two.

Bars?

Or not. Manchester has had a bar scene for years. What's different this time is that years of patient investment by Wash U and by private developers like the Gills and new interest by SLU -- combined with a hugely aggressive joint law enforcement effort -- has made the neighborhood safer and more attractive to residents and visitors. Add in the growing convinction among suburbanites that urban living is interesting and neighborhoods like the Grove are good choices and you find some smart retailers ready to catch the wave.

As soon as the city administrators figure this out, DT will become safe and businesses and residents will flood in. The 1% city tax hurts, but I think it the "perception" of the city "unsafe" and the petty crimes going unpunished (not to mention the whole homeless situation) that is a big deterrent to people. Currently, only the hardy and yuppies have made DT their home, while families (specially DogTown) have made the Grove "area" their base.

I will miss this lunch spot downtown. Interestingly though when I was having lunch there today, the folks who run the Crepes in the City came in to have lunch and the the gentleman who runs CitC was in the back talking with the owner. Possibly they are considering having a permanent location? It might make sense. While the Washington Ave Post location is ideal, they might be looking for their own home and the West end of Wash Ave would likely be more affordable. The Everest location would be on Wash Ave and could fill a niche in the DT West area.

YES, but the newer bars on Manchester has opened this neighborhood up to the entire st. louis region. I know there were/are a number of gay bars there for a long time, but with the opening of Atomic Cowboy, Church Key, RBar, has encouraged more people to come down to this area.
