Well, geez, PE -- I'm thinking that's actually pretty fast for a total gut rehab. I would have guessed at least January -- or January, 2011, by the Mortimer's clock. 8)

what has sparked all of this retail development in the Grove?

Bars?

Or not. Manchester has had a bar scene for years. What's different this time is that years of patient investment by Wash U and by private developers like the Gills and new interest by SLU -- combined with a hugely aggressive joint law enforcement effort -- has made the neighborhood safer and more attractive to residents and visitors. Add in the growing convinction among suburbanites that urban living is interesting and neighborhoods like the Grove are good choices and you find some smart retailers ready to catch the wave.

For those of us unaware, can someone explain the level and type of investment Wash U has had in the grove. Gracias.

The Washington University Medical Center Redevelopment Corporation (WUMCRC) has helped revitalize physical structures in neighborhoods surrounding the Medical Center, leading to an economic and social renewal of the immediate community. During the past two decades, the redevelopment corporation has revitalized the area north of the Medical Center by spurring about $430 million in residential, commercial, and institutional reinvestment. WUMCRC works closely with neighborhood groups in the area in addressing security and public safety issues.

Since 1996 WUMCRC has been working with local neighborhood groups and stakeholders in the Forest Park Southeast neighborhood to stabilize and revitalize this important area. A communitywide neighborhood plan, sponsored by WUMCRC, outlined a $200 million physical and human services plan. To date, the Medical Center institutions have invested $20 million in the plan's initiatives, which have attracted more then $80 million in investment from the public and private sectors. More than 200 new and rehabilitated homes have been completed, with an additional 50 affordable rental units in the development process. In addition, a 90-unit elderly-assistive living complex that opened in November 2002 and the new Adams School and Community Center campus are neighborhood centerpieces. Washington University also has provided adult employment, security, senior home repair, youth summer camps, and after-school programs in this neighborhood.

WUMCRC also has work under way to re-energize Manchester Avenue with new retail, housing, public improvements, and community services.

WUMCRC head Brian Phillips also has a good working relationship with FPSEDC head Irving Blue, making a difference from years past when the town-gown relationship was less symbiotic.

The thing I'll miss most about the current Everest is the super-weird bathroom. I mean, the thing is maybe 3 or 4 feet square, but the ceiling's about 15 feet high. I get dizzy when I look up. Also, have you noticed the four or five pictures hanging along the hall in the bathroom area? They're all exactly the same image!

I doubt the new place will have that kind of quirky charm.

From http://www.stlalamode.com:

Western Wash Ave.'s pioneer Everest Café is making the move even further west...to The Grove. The owners tell us that they'll be packing up (Tibetan prayer flags and all) and taking their chutney to 4145 Manchester, with the move planned for about six weeks from now. Likely the kitchen will be closed for a couple of weeks while they work out the kinks.

"and Bar"???

Are their hours going to be later after the move? I can infer that they will be selling alcohol. They should stay open until 4am on the weekends for all of the drunks leaving the bar and develop some sort of Nepalese burrito made with that bread and those delicious chicken dishes. Maybe make some of those fritters into fry shapes.

I think this place is going to do extremely well in the new location. The location on Washington was in the middle of nowhere. You had to hear about it to find it.

They are for sure relocating right? And not opening a new locale? The website may just be vague, but I'll quote from the website:

"And also coming this fall. . . our new location

4145 Manchester Road, just a couple of blocks from Vandeventer"

Makes it almost seem like they'll keep the one on Wash. I may be way off though.

I spent about 10 months in Topeka back in 96 doing a project for the State Of Kansas. I got a kick out of Fred!!! I remember the first time I saw him, I raced back to the offfice and told everyone about this nut I saw, and they all said "Oh, that's just Fred".

I have to admit, that while the guy is really crazy, and it's a shame that his hateful views are spewn by so many, including children...I can't help but laugh at most of what they talk (yell and scream) about.

Can we talk about Fred Phelps elsewhere and keep this on topic about Everest Cafe? Fred doesn't deserve this many keystrokes.

That building didn't look very far along when I did Agave a couple weeks ago. Have they accelerated construction?
