Hmm. I wish it were more bold. I like the modern design, but it is not awe inspiring like I was hoping. Taller would be better, but I guess Des Peres will not accept that.

How about Edward Jones and Centene Corporation build twin 50 story towers in downtown somewhere? 8)

I like the original building better, but the new addition is OK. I agree, bring on highrises downtown!

Ugh! Those new buildings are worse than I expected. Maybe they're just bad renderings, I dunno.

I hope they end up keeping the original building as-is. It's something of a (minor) architectural landmark, after all.

I'd argue their old building looks better than that crap they've put together in the renderings. However, the design isn't any more pathetic than the Des Peres city government and their ultimatums on Edward Jones.

Wouldn't that be the old "Community Federal Saving and Loan" building?

Old timers may remember. Unless someone previous constructed it.

Yeah, you're right. That building was not originally owned or built by Edward Jones (which is probably a good thing).

Old timer weighs in: Yes, Community Federal. Forfeited, along with an extensive art collection and lot of oriental rugs, during the S&L scandal.

First of all, they arent a very good financial company with "urban" principles or history. Their business is geered towards people with much less money than other firms (Smith Barney, Meryll Lynch). The practice of locating brokers in small offices in strip malls is very unlike other brokerage firms with tall buildings.

So, In fact, they are acting just like the financial company that they are.

Oh I know, but I just can't help but think that if they started acting like a financial firm (ala the rest) they might just grow into a real force for the metro area, it'd certainly be nice to have our own take on a new-york style financial company. That's all I meant. That and I'm sick of seeing campuses for companies in the St. Louis area. Yeah, mostly just that last part.

Des Peres aldermen to hear Edward Jones expansion plan

St. Louis Business Journal - 11:22 AM CDT Friday, July 20, 2007

Edward Jones is scheduled to present its $260 million expansion plan July 23 to the Des Peres, Mo., Board of Aldermen, according to the board's agenda.

The city's Board of Aldermen delayed approval of the proposed expansion plan last month.

Edward Jones' expansion plans, announced in October 2006, include creating at least 1,000 jobs in the next decade and building up to $260 million worth of office space and parking garages in St. Louis County in the next five years. The plan is spurred by state and county incentives and projected company growth.

St. Louis-based Edward Jones is an investment brokerage and financial services firm, and employs about 3,500 locally.

$260 million. So this is bigger than phase I of Ballpark Village.

Edward Jones has agreed to reduce the size of the planned expansion of its headquarters in a tentative agreement that Des Peres aldermen will consider at tonight's Board of Aldermen meeting.

The city and the brokerage firm have been negotiating for several months. The plan was first filed last fall, but then the city slapped a moratorium on development. Edward Jones then sued the city seeking to force them to approve the plan. After the city countersued and the dispute was moved to federal court, the two began talks to resolve the dispute.

The deal calls for Edward Jones to:

Reduce the size of the addition to its building to 225,000 square feet from 291,000 square feet, a 23 percent change.

Cutting the garage to four stories above ground and one underground from six stories above ground. The change will reduce the height of the structure to 36 feet, 21 feet shorter than originally proposed.

Add a second left turn lane and traffic control signs at the main entry point on Manchester Road.

Dredge the lake behind Des Peres City Hall to address any issues of water runoff due to construction. Edward Jones also will landscape and maintain a triangular piece of property at the intersection of Manchester and Interstate 270. The Missouri Department of Transportation

I was hoping for sometime tall be built, but I guess this compromise is better built than nothing at all. :?

I'm just glad they stayed in St. Louis and didn't move to Tempe.

Now Ed Jones can start cherry-picking people that get screwed at AG Edwards/Wachovia.

^That's exactly what I was thinking. It may not be the type of development we'd all like to see, but far more important is the fact that they'll be staying in St. Louis.

I remember when EJones was heavily recruiting and promoting their Tempe location. They were trying to get a lot of students in my college to work out there. Even though this project was downsized, the good thing is they stay in STL and not move out to Tempe. Also, this area can need the job expansion! :)

Hopefully when they look for the additional space they're having to take out of the Des Peres location, they'll look downtown instead of there.
