It's astonishingly true when they say "they don't build 'em like they used too". I mean, this was just a typical, average house in it's day.
Average is a stretch. These both would have been darn close to mansions in the late 19th century, at least very upper middle class.

As for not building them like they used to, well, the average mason/bricklayer only made about $700 annually around the turn of the century, the equivalent of around $20k today. And they did better than most other trades...

4339 Enright is a gem. I'd throw some money in to save it. Is there a way to actually invest in the rehab of that thing as a community?

I would actually do a bit too, what we could at least.

Something like this could serve as a good model for community driven revitalization.

This is what Landmarks does too right (save significant buildings)? I've always thought they'd do well to engage this platform to see if we could crowdfund saving some cool buildings and hopefully break even at the end.

Other than their current rehab project which will be their permanent office, not really. They do have a $100k, interest free loan program but that money is currently on loan and will obviously take time to pay back. Also, $100k is kind of measly when it comes to some of the buildings we really need to save. If you do want to donate to that program, reach out to Andrew Weil, he'd love to hear from you. Or better yet, just become a member. The most enhanced awards and the fall fundraiser are both pretty great events.

I can't believe something doesn't exist yet off the shelf. Maybe a crowdfunded campaign that is managed by a nonprofit and then any proceeds go back into the pool to do another house.

If a Prop NS nominated property cannot be stabilized for budgeted amounts (30 K for a single unit and 50k for multi) it gets turned down and sounded like it automatically goes to consideration for LRA’s demolition list.

^So what you're saying is prop NS is basically a back door avenue to demolition permits?

Lost this beauty today up on Dick Gregory - When they did the rehab of the houses there years ago it was supposed to be rehabbed as a some kind of community amenity. Shame, it was such a neat little church

The façade is completely warped and ready to collapse any day now. The last time I walked by, supports were holding the building together, which gave me hope that maybe it would be saved. I guess not.

^ and then the owner will just sit on it—or create a fake "foundation" to make it look like they're doing something—until it collapses or gets burned down, with no substantial penalties. wash, rinse, repeat.

St. Louis is an endless roller coaster of hope and discouragement.

4816 N 20th, LRA-owned. Damn shame.

Contrast that with this inspiring edifice across the street. Imagine if we put more wealth into buildings instead of cars.
