Feast Magazine is reporting the Melting Pot in the Loop has closed permanently.  The Melting Pot was only 1 of a couple of Loop businesses to pay for advertising on the trolley.  With the Craft Alliance moving soon, the west side of the Loop is becoming embarrassing.
So true. Along with other anchors like Cicero's, Market in the Loop and Bread Co.
I wonder if Wash. U. is considering putting mixed-use housing on the Craft Alliance lot. Of course, would be good to see them do Loop Lofts Phase 2 first.
Too bad the Loop Trolley didn't make it another 10 weeks. It could have used Covid as cover to shut down, retool and reset without the embarrassment of having to do so under normal circumstances.

why the loop trolley failed;
Great video and it was produced fairly, I think.

It's really pathetic, in my opinion, that the Bi-State Board won't throw this project an assist. For all the cheerleading Joe Edwards has done for the Delmar Loop in helping to ignite new and rehab development, and millions upon millions in investments, the least local leaders could do is allow Bi-State to work its magic. Okay......it was a boondoggle.

But clearly, it would be such a monumental waste of money, engineering and an international embarrassment if St. Louis doesn't find some way to fix this. Find some way "to feed" the line.

The vintage trolley cars grew on me, but I do believe modern cars would attract more riders.........and the "extension" should be free and frequent.

Also, Bi-State would need to create an in-house wrecker removal service for the idiots who don't know how to park their cars; as well as identify chronic offending parking spots then possibly remove them.

^I can't imagine anyone would give two farts what they look like if they were free and had the same speeds and frequencies. Modern cars would have the advantage of A/C, but the old and "old" ones have gorgeous wood work and flippy seats.

Keep in mind that there's an active proposal for a 108 room hotel at the old Delmar-Harvard site, with adjoining office space. And right next door Wash U is finishing up the rehab of Lewis Center as 30 apartment units.

Rent in the Loop has done nothing but go up over the past decade. From a business perspective, the melting pot doesn't need to be in a high traffic corridor like the Loop. Most of its business comes from reservations and date nights, AKA those that go out of their way to eat there. If it isn't benefiting from the high foot traffic, why pay for the premium space?

They could do just as well in Clayton or Brentwood. If the Boulevard phase two is still happening that would be a perfect spot. A rooftop concept in the city would also be magnificent.

Well hopefully the coming commercial real estate market crash will bring down rent in the Loop?

It's alive! Woohoo! No info in this short story about how this is possible since they ran out of money etc. but who cares! Weekend service in July.  Maybe the big car will roll out finally. That would be something.

The TDD is still bringing money in via its 1% sales tax. $858k last year.

Run it for free on all weekends and holidays until it gets cold.  At least it might knock down the weeds growing against the rails in the St. Louis City portion of the route (looks unkempt right now).

^I believe that is the plan, yes. Free weekend service. I'm not the first to say this, but I think they ought to give running it free all the time a go.

I never thought I'd say this but oh how I miss this thing! I took a walk from DeBaliviere Place to Blueberry Hill back when we had pleasant weather and couldn't help but think how brilliant a system like this would've been if it was executed well. Of course, we could still reap the benefits of added transportation if we switched the narrative on the system and made it a free shuttle, transporting people to and from the Loop. So what if it hits a car now and then? That's what gives it character! In all seriousness, I hate to see the system sitting unused after all it has done to spur development in the area. With hundreds of new people coming to the general vicinity in the coming years, I would like to see this make a comeback as a serious viable light rail option.

Perhaps I missed reading about the trolley, but I did not see it really mentioned in the recent articles about the ground breaking ceremonies for the DeBaliviere T.O.D. projects.  Instead, the articles focused on the ease of use of the nearby metro link station.

The taxable sales in the Trolley TDD are enough to operate it without fares or funds from elsewhere.

Seems possible with a grocer and several restaurants and shops on DeBaliviere in 2022

How much more does the TDD need to raise to free daily operations? Or even just it’s former schedule

I think when they were looking for help from Metro it was like $100-200k a year. That was before Covid wrecked the sales in the TDD though.

I’ve always thought connecting WashU South forty to the main campus to the loop and the dorms there would be a great ideal. Replace the WashU shuttles with a trolley and get some Washu funds rolling in.
