When St.Louis is out of the top 5 list of most dangerous cities then i'll believe crime has dropped till then everything is status quo sorry if i sound harsh but i want results in all crime statistics. Being #4 isn't progress and theres has got to be better ways and efforts in getting overall crime down. We can point at Chicago blah blah city that may have a higher crime rate than us but the methodology doesn't hide the real facts we're #4. I don't want us close to #5 #10 #15 #20 #25. St.Louis is too nice of a city to be seen this way and yes it does give the entire region a black eye and this has been going on way before Ferguson ever started declining..

While true for overall crime, we really do have a homicide crisis. Most likely we'll wind up the year with the highest raw total since 2008; I guess in a morbid way that year's high number is a good thing otherwise most likely we'd finish out with the highest tally since 96 or 97. Also, if the trend of the past four or five months holds we'll have homicide rates in the 50's to 60's, which is brutal. We very well might wind up the year with the highest homicide rate in the nation.stlhistory wrote:I think "the city has gone mad" would have been a legitimate thing in 1974 or 1994, but not 2014. For what it's worth, crime is down 7.9% this year since last year. Some might cry that the numbers are fudged, but I just don't buy it. We live in a hyperaware environment vis-a-vis crime, and when we on the board think crime is up we're just reflecting the average American (who also thinks crime is higher every year even though it's lower).
My house got burglarized today. Kicked in the back door. Neighbor called the police, but they got out of there quick. Got the TV, laptop, binoculars, some quarters, a security box with checkbooks, cards, passport, SS card, papers, degrees. They managed to cash two checks before the account was stopped. Good times in the STL!

^ sorry to hear that, quincunx. that really sucks.

Given the high profile nature of murder and how the region deals with it, has anyone seen statistics that weight the relative cost of the crime with statistical changes in the crime rate? It's easy to say "crime is down 7.9%" but if murders are up dramatically, then it's possible that the overall cost of crime has increased.
There have been several studies of victimization costs over the years that could be adapted for these purposes:

apparently, the Bosnian community are now protesting against this homicide we should all support them.

damn. sorry to hear that quincunx. i would imagine the bank can trace the checks to the place and time they were cashed, so hopefully there's some surveillance footage.quincunx wrote:My house got burglarized today. I hope so. The names on the checks were of two women, one of which had a Passing Bad Check - Less Than $500 beef a couple years ago. I doubt either were one of the burglars, and are collaborators. What's especially surprising is that they went to other branches of my bank, and they accepted the checks despite the handwriting being nowhere close to being mine, the checks were written in a way I never write them, and I rarely give checks to people like that for $650 and $800. The other odd thing thing did was put dates on the checks before the day of the burglary. They worked fast and had cashed the checks within a few hours. I got a call from another bank which I had a closed account and forgot there were checks for. They had tried to cash a check on that one. Tip: freeze you checking accounts asap, before canceling credit cards.

Good to see that the police have made some quick arrests in the horrible Bevo Mill homicide. The Bosnian community already was feeling frustrated with crime and I hope this latest incident doesn't hasten movement out to the burbs.

^ I would venture a guess that 75% have already left the city for South County in the last 10 years.
- 8,155
^ could be, but it still is a strong and substantial community that the city needs. And Zemir's situation illustrates that Bosnians are still moving to the city.... his family settled outside the region when they came to America for refuge and he moved here just a couple months ago to start a life with his new wife. Things will be a lot worse for South City if the Bosnian presence becomes a shell.

Sorry the all caps but... NO MORE EXCUSES THAT HOMICIDE IN BEVO IS THE LAST STRAW, THE CITY GOVERNMENT MAIN GOAL SHOULD BE TO GET CRIME AND ESPECIALLY HOMICIDE UNDER CONTROL. THIS STARTED WAY BEFORE FERGUSON CRAP STARTED THE POLICE SHOULD NOT BE HANDICAPPED AND, SHOULD BE SUPPORTED BY CITY OFFICIALS NOT SCARED OF REPERCUSSIONS. WE NEED A MAYOR THAT TAKE CRIME SEROUS, AND EVEN USE POLICIES THAT WORK EVEN IF CONTROVERSIAL. WE NEED A GIULIANI TYPE MAYOR WHO GETS THINGS DONE AND NOT WORRY ABOUT WHAT IS POLITICALLY CORRECT OR NOT.
....Now back to my usually calm self .
So in this area we've had the Begic homicide, Paulsen homicide, unsolved Mon Rai homicide, and the Elicia's armed robbery. What is going on?
Also, since this most recent was committed by juveniles after curfew, can the parents be held partially liable? If they are charged as adults can that still happen? Does this qualify for capital?

^ was the homicide of the immigrant store clerk on Gravois near Gravois Plaza about a year ago ever solved? And then there was the homicide of the Ethopian immigrant refugee in Dutchtown/Gravois Park area this summer.
Wish I know the answers to your questions but what I'd also like to know about this latest crime is how much of a response was there by police in trying to catch these guys after the first guy was attacked about an hour earlier.... or maybe he didn't report it?

Mon Rai was the 7-11 at Gravois and Bates. Never solved. Haris Gogic was the clerk at a wireless store near Chippewa and Morganford and that one did have a charge.

Souls? That's insulting to my pets. That violent trash isn't human, and they aren't even animal. Not when 4 of them beat someone to death with hammers. And with them not being human or animal and therefore incapable of empathy and lacking souls, I'd be A-OK with the police turning off the video tapes and inflicting some lethal damage. Because they sure as sh*t don't deserve public funds to be spent on their trial.I heard about this gruesome crime this morning while at the gym. What pathetic souls

Please pardon my caps, but ST LOUIS MUST GET THIS CRIME UNDER CONTROL. THIS IS HORRENDOUS. THIS YEAR HAS BEEN STLS WORST YEAR....EVER. THIS STORY MADE THE BBC WORLD SERVICE. I am definitely thinking perspective immigrants to the area would love to hear about how an immigrant was beaten to death and how the city is plagued by rioting. Smh, the damage STL has suffered this year is catastrophic. 2015 i doubt will be any better..

apparently St louis is not the only city with a crime problem , Shoot even one of the most gentrified cities in the country is having huge crime Problem a 20% increase.
