http://www.stltoday.com/blogzone/st-lou ... -suspects/

As most of you know, there was a murder in an alley in Clifton Heights. I am shocked that this happened so close to home. Anyhow, talked to one of my police sources late last night, he said they have a guy in custody, suspect is a black male residing on the 7100 block of Minnesota. That is all I know. I also know that the accomplice, his buddy is on the run, the thug in custody gave up his boy...1 off the street, hopefully 1 more to come. =D>

^ I'm not surprised the suspect is from the 7100 block of Minnesota Avenue.

I still think Carondelet is on the way up, and I feel generally safe here, but there are some beautiful people around here if you know what I mean.

But anyone wishing to lump Clifton Heights in with dangerous neighborhoods is really stretching. As the article points out, there are no records of homicides in Clifton Heights since at least 1980. Of course this news is always disturbing, but I see no reason for residents in that area to feel afraid.

I didn't see any preposterous comments following the stories related to this crime, just ordinarily stupid ones. You would think the moderating team would recognize that the same trolls make the worst posts repeatedly, and then call them out for their unacceptable behavior. But, as we've illustrated on STLtomorrow, the P-D seems to tolerate the cycle of hatred and ignorance as long as it gets their website more hits, I suppose.

"dozens" of car break ins in St. Charles!?!

http://www.stltoday.com/blogzone/chas-b ... break-ins/

I hate to have schadenfreude over anyone being the victime of a crime, but if there must be victims please please let some of them be the self-righteous STLToday commenters who claim St. Chuck is a Shangri-La!

I don't believe I have heard anything following an incident I witnessed last Monday (11/9/09) and wanted to see if anyone had any information on this. Around 7:30-7:45pm, I had just left my brothers house near Gustine and Delor and I was driving East on Delor waiting for the stoplight at Grand. I was the only car at that point when a second car came up behind me looking to make a right turn. I moved forward as much as possible to allow him to pass, but I was already fairly well into Grand at that point. The driver stuck his head out to start to tell me to move farther when a third car approached and suddenly cut into the approaching traffic lane then ran the redlight. I then heard a loud noise and noticed the car that had just ran the light was in a fishtail then took off down Delor towards Virginia. After the light changed I continued down Delor and made a right on Virginia. When I was about 1/4 mile from Bates I saw a Police car heading East on Bates towards 55. I was also on my way to 55 to head back to Lafayette Sq. When I turned onto Bates I could see the police had pulled someone over just West of Minnesota. As I was approaching the two cars I moved over into the other lane to pass them when I saw the officer who was at the vehicle turn and start to back off when suddenly the rear window exploded. The Officer ducked as the other vehicle took off and made a right onto Minnesota. The Officer then ran back to the squad car and took off in pursuit. From what I could see someone in the vehicle must have shot from inside the vehicle towards the squad car with another officer still inside. It was one of those surreal moments that seem to happen in slow motion. I can still see the look on the officer's face when he realized what had just happened and quickly took off running to get back in the vehicle. I have not read anything about the event. I looked at the SafeCity crime map and there was a weapons event noted at Bates/Minnesota, but nothing additional.

Got'em!!! =D> 2 more off the streets for sure!!

The positive for us in that area, is the fact that they knew each other, had no ties to the area. From what I hear, the fight/murder could have occurred anywhere, just happened that the fight climaxed in that alley. Not a random act. Still don't want that to happen, but the circumstances could be much worse.

I haven't heard anything about this incident either. I bet it was scary being so close to all of that!

I saw it a few weeks ago...not exactly sure where to purchase, but you'll find it if you search Google for "nothing in this house is worth dying for"

Report: St. Louis reclaims No. 2 ranking for crime

By Joel Currier

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

ST. LOUIS - A yearly report ranking U.S cities by crime has again identified St. Louis as the second worst behind Camden, NJ.

Last year, St. Louis was fourth.

The controversial report released this weekend by publishing firm CQ Press ranks 393 cities (with at least 75,000 people) based on 2008 crime statistics published by the FBI.

Rounding out the top five worst cities for crime are familiar names on CQ’s list: Oakland, Calif., Detroit, Mich., and Flint, Mich.

^
That said, St. Louis does have a crime problem and reducing it has to be one of the City's top priorities.

I heard from a cop friend this weekend that the force is understaffed by over 200 officers and counting. How can the City reduce crime when it is reducing force!!??

Organizations will always tell you that they are understaffed in order to increase their budgets. And this information came from a cop? Makes sense. Correct me if i'm wrong, but it's my understanding that St. Louis spends more per capita on its police force than any in the nation.

^I would have to figure that there is a certain number of officers that are recommended or required per 100K people. The numbers couldn't be that easy to fudge. I have to say, I have no ties to the Dept. and I'd love to see 200+ more officers on the streets. In fact, I'd take 1000 more if I could.

PostNov 23, 2009#1114

On top of that, if you were out there risking your life, you'd want as much backup as possible. The more the better when it comes to that. I am sure some officers in certain areas feel overwhelmed or like they don't have a chance due to the amount of crime and square mileage to cover.

Does anybody know anytihng about the (multiple) gunshots fired near Russell and Nebraska yesterday afternoon around 3 or 4pm? I was in my backyard and heard 10-15 shots in about a 10 second span. The kdis next door that were playing football outside started yelling "machine gun!!!!!"

Anyway, there were police and fire responders within 45 seconds. The fire truck was staging on longrfellow near compton "waiting for the police to secure the area", but other than that didn't know anything when I asked them what was going on.

14 cars broken into near Harry's; several recent breakins at Humphrey's.

As noted a few months ago, one of my cars was broken into a block from the Fox. If the City doesn't get this under control soon, I think the consequences are going to be serious.

I'm surprised nothing was said on the Fox Park listserve. This has been happening a lot around Nebraska/Russell and California/Russell, and it always seems to be in the afternoon. The last time it happened, it ended in a pursuit at California & Gravois. I thought it would have stopped. I know there were some arrests made after I called on a gang meet across the street from my house and I know that some--if not all of them--were released recently. I'm not saying its related, but it was quiet until recently. Call the police for ANYTHING out of the ordinary.

There was a shooting on Geyer... both parties involved are not believed to have been from the area.

What can the city do? A lot of the vehicles that are broken into have valuable within sight. Part of crime prevention is making yourself less of a target, this includes taking valuables out of your car or putting a club on your car. Will this stop all break-ins? No, however it will help. The police force is being reduced, however secondary patrols are up. It really is a hard situation for both citizens and police.

Do people not have alarms on their cars these days? I would think it would be difficult for 14 cars to be hit with horns, lights and sirens going off.

I college my car was broken into repeatedly. I purchased an alarm that beeped anytime someone got within 2 feet of car. Needless to say it was an EXCELLENT theft deterrent. (100% effective)

Yeah - it sounded like (based on the direction from my back yard) Rusell or Allen and Longfellow but I said Nebraska and Russell based on where I saw the police cars.

Do you know any more details?

yeah I agree. Don't leave anything valuable in sight.

I would like to see a decoy car set up to appear to have GPS. ipods, laptops, etc--and when it's broken into it explodes incinerating one of these punks

I'm with you in spirit. But when the city finds the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, please let us know. Once again, it's my understanding that St. Louis spends more per capita on its police force than any in the nation. Perhaps resource realignment could help alleviate some problems, who knows...

Just posted this on the P-D's comment page for the subject article.

Is crime an issue that we face together? Yes. It's also my understanding that St. Louis spends more per capita on its police force than any in the nation.

Shame on the Post-Dispatch for facilitating an anonymous comment section that foments such racist drivel. The world might be a different place if the P-D management cared more about advancing the level of civil discourse than the number of hits and revenue they receive from these incessant flame wars.

Will the Post-Dispatch get their act together? Please read more at http://stltomorrow.org
