By "sweetheart deal" they mean asking the city and county for $210 million.

There are no majority or principal owners of any NBA or NFL teams who are African American. How do we convince David Stewart he should consider becoming one with an NFL or NBA team here?

The owner of the Trailblazers is not selling. He just wants out. St. Louis is not getting them though, even if the name fits our region perfectly.

Average anti-St. Louis take from wither even though St. Louis was named as a possible city to land the Trail Blazers should they end up moving.

So when Indy built their current NFL stadium, they got funding from all surrounding counties. Is that impossible here? Is Kansas smarter than us financially? The potion of the KC metro that is in the state of Kansas is 900K - less than St Louis County in Missouri.

And not all of the suburbs are paying for the Chiefs either. Just far western Johnson County and all or nearly all of Wyandotte County

I’m very pro-St. Louis, especially when it comes to sports because we are an awesome sports town. But Trailblazers ownership wants out due to their battling with local politicians. They want to go somewhere where the politics is opposite of Portland.

No major city is going to have politics opposite of Portland.

I mean MIA and a few others do. But they tend to already have teams.

This is almost certainly just the same sh*t that happened with NFL owners using a vacant LA as a leveraging tool to get cities to socialize stadiums.  An implicit or explicit "Build ME a new stadium with YOUR money, or I'm moving MY team." from the team owner. That happened to Minnesota, Seattle, Cincinnati, Tampa Bay and more.

Highly highly highly unlikely the Blazers go anywhere but sports reporters in 2nd/3rd tier cities like STL, KC, Louisville, Nashville can't help themselves. Sports reporters - more than any other beat reporters - are HUGE fans of their industry and mostly lose the ability to critically think. I don't blame them really. Another pro team in their city would certainly make their job more fun!

Be that as it may, I'd *love*a team here and think a team would do well fan support wise. not the same audience as the NHL in large part. Corp base for suites is a whole other issue. may not exist anymore

STL would have a better shot at getting the New Orleans Pelicans that seem destined to be moving at some point in the future. Portland is milking his city for money. They'd go to Seattle long before they'd come to the Midwest.

Seattle is going to get an expansion team with Vegas

I'm in no rush to get an NBA team. The on-court product is just so "meh". I think there's a reckoning coming for that league on multiple levels.

And this Doudin dude just seems like a sociopath. I've suffered through Bill Bidwill, Georgia F, and StanK. I'm not in the mood for another horrible pro sports team owner/

I've tried not to indulge the conversation too much. But...

(A) St. Louis has billionaire families who continue to be vocal about NBA in St. Louis.
(B) Chaifetz is already a part owner within the NBA.
(C) Which team does Chaifetz part own?  Portland Trail Blazers.

Imagine what this forum would be saying if the Blues and St. Louis were in a nasty public dispute over Enterprise Center with the lease expiring in four years. The Blues also have a part owner from New Orleans who consistently mentioned to the media their desire to bring NHL to New Orleans. They even had their name on a Tulane's hockey arena.

We just need a new arena!

I really don't think St. Louis does. The Blues absolutely want further upgrades to Enterprise Center in near term. A $300-500M renovation of the Enterprise Center including expansion to the Kiel Center parking garage would bring Enterprise into the upper 25% of both NHL and NBA arenas. Regardless of the public appetite for stadium renovations, I feel the politicians between State, City, County would get there for a large share of that.

I agree. The Enterprise Center is in good condition and with another renovation and expansion into the Kiel Center garage it could be a first class arena. You could even knock down 1520 Market and build a mixed use development with whatever else is needed (parking, offices, retail, etc)

My belief is that after losing the Rams and Chiefs, there would be a strong appetite at the local and state level to attract an NBA team to the region. Obviously it’s a long ways from happening, but it does seem like there are a lot of the right conditions in place to make getting a team a possibility.

I could stomach it if, say, the City asked the Blues ownership group to commit to building out the area, partnering with a local developer, and assisted with property acquisition.

The renovations to Enterprise that were done 2016 to 2019 were also minimal: costing around $110 million. Meanwhile other arenas of the same age are getting much much bigger and expensive renovations:

Recent & Upcoming Major Renovation Projects
  • Capital One Arena (Washington, D.C.): ~$800M (2025–2028)
  • Bridgestone Arena (Nashville): $750M (2026–2030)
  • Crypto.com Arena (Los Angeles): $700M (Completed 2022–2024)
  • Xcel Energy Center (St. Paul): ~$600M (Proposed / Timeline unconfirmed)
  • Delta Center (Salt Lake City): $525M (2025–2027)
  • SAP Center (San Jose): $425M (Starting 2027)
  • Nationwide Arena (Columbus): $400M (Proposed for 2027 start)
  • Amalie Arena (Tampa): $325M (2026–2028)
  • Spectrum Center (Charlotte): ~$280M (Finishing summer 2026)
  • Kia Center (Orlando): $250M (Upgrades to a newer 2010 building)
  • TD Garden (Boston): $100M (Club/suite level upgrades this year, following similar $50M+ projects in 2006, 2013, 2017, and 2022)
Upcoming New Arena Openings
  • Scotia Place (Calgary): Opening 2027
  • Paycom Center Replacement (Oklahoma City): Opening 2028
  • New Downtown Arena (Philadelphia): Opening 2030 (Replacing a 1996 building)
  • Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex: Two separate NBA and NHL arenas planned (TBD)

NBA is not going to allow a like for like relocation. STL will need either a mega renovation or a new arena.

I am laughing at this. Totally a reverse of the St.Louis dome "top tier" requirement.

This is kinda how I see it. I feel like Enterprise could be acceptable for a temporary stay, but I can't see a relocation happening without guarantees for a new arena.

Wouldn't the Trail Blazers just stay till the lease is up and then leave? Or just keep paying for the lease so it's not technically broken?

I can’t find any evidence of this being a rule. Where both the NBA/NHL overlap regionally, 11 NBA arenas share with NHL and 4 have NBA and NHL specific arenas. Both Las Vegas and Seattle are expected to share arenas when the league expands.

They will absolutely need a renovation but having two similarly sized arenas in a market St. Louis size is unheard of.

NBA the league has to approve any relocations. I can 100% guarantee that they are not going to approve a move to an arena that isn’t first class or on the pathway to getting there.
