Hummmmm-

By the way there are like 4 major exterior rehabs happening up and down the block between Jefferson and California, including removing the "modernization" of the Cinderella building

^ Any pictures of what's happening with the Cinderella? The "modern" ground floor facade is very bad.

New waffle place, Melt, just opened at 2712 Cherokee St. It's a move from Carondolet it says, but I wasn't familiar with it before. If interesting waffles aren't enough of a selling point they also have a full bar and pinball. Sounds pretty awesome, I look forward to checking it out.
Anyone been yet? I keep meaning to get there and check it out.

There is a liquor hearing notice on the front door at of the building at Ohio and Cherokee - interior work has been going on for several months - Anyone know who is going in? Yaqui's is progressing, Fortune Teller expanding, Luminary work looks to be ongoing - By next summer the whole street could be very active.

Cool - I like the way Cherokee is coming together - When Empire Café gets underway it is going to be a nice collection of restaurants/bars - now some additional eclectic retail would be nice.

Agreed. A buddy who used to work along there and moved away 5 years ago came back to visit this last weekend. He was shocked.

I'm just waiting though when the first national chain store of any type opens along there. You know there will be people who will be really ticked about it.

Whiskey bar has installed new storefront windows - revealing what looks like a really cool interior - Makes this pretty ordinary building look about 1000X better

That is 23 storefronts opened (or reoccupied) in a one year period - that has got to be some kind of record for St. Louis - if not that entire Midwest - Will see about staying power - hopefully most will

Coming in 2014 - announced so far -

Los Punk, located at 2709, is expected to open within the next couple of weeks and will feature a rotating menu including sandwiches and BBQ in a laid back setting with a projector for movie nights, fuse ball and full bar.

Yaqui’s, located at 2728 Cherokee, also slated to open in the next couple of weeks, will specialize in wood-fired pizza, tamales and offer a large selection of fine wine and a full bar.

Empire Cafe, located at 2622 Cherokee and slated to open in Spring of 2014, will be a community centered cafe offering a rotating menu of international street food sourced from local ingredients and purveyors with an emphasis on sustainability, seasonal availability, and health consciousness. Built from repurposed shipping containers, the cafe will feature a variety of spaces to enjoy their offerings including a large patio, counter seating, and mezzanine style upper patio.

Bespoke, located at 2648 Cherokee and opening in Spring 2014, will be a commercial/work space selling handmade one-of-kind pieces and offering a collaborative workspace for local designers, fabric makers and artisans.

Athlete Eats, located at 2837 Cherokee and opening soon, will focus on healthy eating great-tasting, convenient, effortless, and tailor made food and smoothies to go.

Blue Pearl, located at 2926 Cherokee and slated to open sometime this year, will be a bar, restaurant and live music venue.

I think Cherokee/ Lemp is well position to attract people well beyond St. Louis - it has a culture and "scene" that is pretty unique - The question is how it will evolve -

Can it still be a neighborhood center for a diverse local population?

How will people react if a chain moves in? there are chains already - notorious poverty exploiters rent to own centers, and Save-A-Lot

How does it keep its identity but continue to grow?

Anyway should be an interesting year - Will be interesting to gage street traffic by midsummer

I think the several of suburban strip malls at the intersection of Cherokee and Jefferson will be replaced by mid-rise, mixed-use buildings when they eventually build the N-S MetroLink line, whenever that will be. The Lemp Brewery should be redeveloped into offices, classrooms, labs, apartments, and hotel rooms with entertainment on the ground floors. Maybe re-open Cherokee Caves? This is quickly becoming on the the Midwest's premier hubs for artists to live and work and I hope it stays that way.

And seeing the Downtown skyline behind the steeples and smokestacks of Soulard from a Lemp Brewery apartment window would probably be just about the best view possible in the whole City! Then going downstairs and having Cherokee, Lemp, and Broadway all right there would also be wicked, especially as they grow.

That is a pretty amazing business showing for the stretch. Go Cherokee!

Though I do feel that it suffers the same problem as pretty much all of the City's other business districts -- they're islands, surrounded by (whether its justified or not) "suspect" neighborhoods. Sure, I (and many others) have no problem coming down, parking a couple blocks off Cherokee in the residential n'hoods and wandering around, but for most in AND outside of St. Louis its a daunting prospect.

I'll have to look (or someone can tell me) what kind of effect Cherokee's growth has had on the surrounding streets/neighborhoods. Is it seeing substantially higher rehab rates, higher property values and more diverse income levels, or is the success pretty much relegated to Cherokee itself.

I'd like to think the stability and growth of both Cherokee and Benton Park is starting to "connect" the space between. As I hope Tower Grove South can do heading east. My knowledge of Gravois Park to the south is minimal though. If successful, we're looking at a pretty substantial "block" of St. Louis neighborhoods coming into their own and removing the island effect -- basically everything east of Kingshighway and south of 44!

With regard to Gravois Park, it seems pretty stagnant and still is probably the most crime and poverty-ridden spot in south city. That being said I think that in general the blocks directly south of Cherokee look pretty good and that overall the neighborhood has a good housing stock. Even though Benton Park West, to the north, is doing better as a neighborhood, I think Gravois Park actually has better housing stock and more quality architecture, which could attract enough rehabbers to stabilize it ala Fox Park or Tower Grove East (in that those neighborhoods, while still being a bit rough, are stable and attracting a wide range of people).

That's good news.

Who do you think the backlash might come from? Because beyond the original poor European immigrants who built the whole area with their bare poor immigrant hands, nobody can claim rights to it. Everyone is just guests passing through at this point.

Me, personally, concerning a Starbucks on Cherokee. I'm against it.

But if you can see into future about ten years down the road, please tell me where the Starbucks will be located. I might pick up the closest abandoned house while it's cheap.
