They Should turn West Pine into a Roller Hockey rink. A lot of schools out west have them (like Colorado State where I went) and Roller Hockey is big here. You could have pick up, intermurals and let the SLU team (and others like UMSL and Wash U) use it as a practice facility-(of course outside teams would have to pay...) and that would in turn pay for staff and intermurals.

At CSU we would have like 4-5 teams of four playing pick up with the winner staying on (play to 3). I could spend hours out there.

Just an idea for an aging building.

And I agree on both points about the pool area.

And here it is!

I used to play volleyball tournaments in West Pine in the mid 80's. That peach and blue colored thing (what is that?) in the upper left corner on the east side of the gym used to be a parking lot. So it's been a lot of years since I've been out there.

I believe those are the outdoor swimming pools they put in about 5 years ago. They are not very practical.

They look like lap pools. Why not just cut out the part in the middle and make one big pool?

Are there bike paths to the Arena or on campus grounds?

The arena doesn't exist yet.

And I would doubt there are bike paths on campus. Why would you need them?

No bike only paths, but plenty of sidewalks everywhere traversing through the abundant greenspace and fountains and sculptures.

What the heck? When did they put in that river? I've been to events at MOCRA recently, but I never noticed anything more than a fountain. Did I just over-look the whole river thing?

I went to Control Data Institute (where my future was just a phone-call away) back in the early 80's in the building just west of the West Pine Gym. The campus sure has changed since then!

are they still wasting plenty of tuition money installing and removing the five large palm trees by the "lap" pools every summer? That was so absurd! (and maybe still is) At least now SLU is getting a world class athletic facility...anyone know if they have plans for running cooling coils in the floor of the new arena, maybe for conversion to a small ice rink? That would really make it a world class facility!

The palm trees are still there, although one was looking pretty bad two weeks ago.

Drove by the site tonight and looks like they are starting to clear the area for construction. This may have been going on for some time now, but this is the first time I've noticed.

For some reason, it stuck a smiley face in where the 8 should have been - Aug. 28.

The cool smiley makes you too cool to end parenthetical statements with the number eight. But, you can show it who's boss by checking "Disable Smilies in this post."

I wonder for how long will I be receiving mailers from SLU begging for money for the new arena?

What next: a football stadium?

If you are an alumni, they will beg for money the rest of your life.

Their major fundraising efforts have already taken place. Now they're trying to lock down some major gifts from the heavy hitters. They just picked up $1 million gifts from the Taylor Foundation and U.S. Bank, and it sounds like they're close to getting some more.

Biondi has completely transformed that campus. It is a much better place now than it was 20 years ago. As is the entire area around it.

I realize that: but the push for this darn arena has been hardcore. At one point I got a mailer every week for 7 weeks straight. I have no problem with fundraising and realize that's part of being an alumni: but dial it down a notch.

I agree. But the death of "Clarks" was a hard punch to take.

No doubt that the campus has improved. But the demolition of The Grind at Spring and Laclede, 20 North on Vandeventer, and the mixed use buildings (former Vito's, Chinese place and apartments) at Grand and Lindell all seem foolish for nothing now but grass and shrubs. At least the former bank across from College Church became a fountain or the former dorms and convenience store on Pine some outdoor pools, but still, how much more green space does Father Larry need?

Yeah, I suspect fund raising is a tricky business - send out too few flyers and get to few donations. Send out to many and risk annoying people, who may then not send a donation.

20 North was no loss.

As for the others, only time will tell...

Laclede Street Bar and Grill and the old Billiken Bench Club are slated for demo as well - a developer has bought both properties and is planning a new development on the site. BBC is pretty non-descript, but Laclede St. is a very cool building.

To me, the loss of the Marina Building at Grand and Lindell was huge. Now, if the U. ever builds something (hopefully better) to replace it, that would be encouraging. I do miss Bullfeathers Pub though - I spent a lot of Friday afternoons at that joint.

The State Apartments (now the outdoor pools) was a cool old building and fit in well with the original campus. I kind of miss that one too. Its location on campus is great, and I can't help but think that SLU will use it for a new building someday.
