^You're right. I suppose the building isn't of any particular historic merit. I should have just said pre-War (although the building in question may not even be pre-War on closer inspection.

In any case, my issue is that Clayton has a diminishing stock of smaller, pre-War commercial and retail buildings that lend the town center some character and a small-town historic feel.

At this rate Clayton will soon be a glorified Westport, if it isn't already.

Having a "ring-side" seat to the construction, I have to say its pretty neat watching it go up.

Here's a picture from yesterday's Business Journal showing the early progress at the Centene tower, and how it will fit in to DT Clayton.

PostJun 13, 2009#381

Another building came down for the garage portion of this project, a 3 story office building near 7732 Forsyth. The footprint of this project is really big. I hope they end up building the phase 2 tower to justify this gigantic use of space.

^ this tower would have been a bit squaty even when it was 313', since they scaled down about 75' and kept it the same footprint, this is going to look pretty bloated.

Centene Center

$186 million

21 S. Hanley Road

Status: Under construction

Clayton scored a major win when Centene Corp., one of the St. Louis area’s largest public companies, announced plans to build a new headquarters near its current base on Hanley. After several years of court battles and a brief courtship with the Ballpark Village development downtown, Centene finally broke ground on its $186 million headquarters project in October 2008.

The Centene Center project, with Clayco and The Koman Group as equity partners, hit a snag in recent months as its backers worked to finalize financing in the midst of frozen credit markets. On June 5, a consortium of banks led by U.S. Bank committed to a construction loan to fund the project, with an estimated completion date of June 2010.

Centene is leasing 200,000 square feet of the available 460,000 square feet of office space. Downtown law firm Armstrong Teasdale will occupy 125,000 square feet of that space. No tenants have yet been named for the 28,125 square feet of available street-level retail space.

Concrete looks to be about ready to be poured for the 6th above ground floor (webcam).

PostAug 27, 2009#385

Not too much interest in this one, huh?

11th floor being poured. Should be starting to see some part of the curtain wall soon. I'm interested to see if the glass is really as light as it looks in the renderings. This makes a large impact on the skyline from FPP. Lots of glass is going to make a big difference.

The success or failure of Modernist architecture comes down to the details - materials, color, massing, etc. If done well, this could be quite a handsome building. If they cheap out, it will be just another boring glass box. I'm concerned that the reduced height may throw off the whole composition. I guess we'll find out soon.

Glass is now going up on at least the south side of the building, though it appeared they were starting on the 3rd or 4th floor. Does this seem odd? I haven't paid much attention to the designs, maybe there is some sort of parking on the first few floors.

^I'm fairly positive it is just for convenience of installation, and the order in which the panels arrive on site. I think its a project management thing.

Glass looks good btw, shade darker than I expected.

There's an article in the West End Word this week. It mentions that it will be capped off in November and that the garage will be pre wired for car plugin's (starting with 50 spots).

EDIT

Actually they have it up now. Here's the link

http://www.westendword.com/NC/0/1251.html

Neidorff said that work on some of the tower’s infrastructure such as plumbing has already begun and that recently, five truckloads of highly reflective windows made from a special glass were delivered. The glass is made with a low iron casting, which will eliminate any greenish hue. Work to install the windows will begin in mid-September.

The building is expected to be “capped off” sometime in November and should be ready for use in July 2010, Neidorff said.

One major aspect of the project will be the garage, which will include retail space along Forsyth. According to Neidorff, the garage will draw more power than would be typical, because Centene eventually plans to install plug-in stations for electric cars. The company plans to begin with stations for up to 50 cars, although the exact number will depend on the amps needs per car. Overall, the garage will have approximately 1,000 parking spaces, with the majority available to the public. There will continue to be parking meters available along Forsyth.

The inclusion of the spaces for electric cars was welcomed by Clayton Mayor Linda Goldstein, who heard about the idea for the first time at the Aug. 24 event. “What they want to do with the electric cars is impressive. It shows a commitment to community environmental responsibility,” Goldstein said.

Here's a link to the webcam. At this link there are two webcams, one for the building, another for the parking garage. Just click the drop-down menu to see the webcam of the garage.

Pics from the ground level would definitely be great though.

I like the look of the two-toned glass. The building will look light and contemporary. We need more of this in St. Louis.

Too bad it is not being built in downtown.

The glass is intriguing. Moorlander's pictures compelled me to drive out there and see for myself. I think it's going to be very cool looking; differant than anything else we've got in St. Louis.

This should be a handsome building.
