^I don't think that's what he meant. I figure he was being pedantic about neighborhoods. And . . . I do that sometimes. A lot, really. Often rebelling against the official labels when I think they're silly. I think the truth is we all want to see fewer car adjacent fatalities in all neighborhoods, no matter how pedantic or argumentative we are. Maybe we argue how to fix it. Maybe we argue about lines on a map. (We always argue about lines on maps around here. I think it's our shared hobby.) But nobody wants to get killed crossing the street. Or to attend their friends or relatives funerals. It's . . . no fun. None at all. No matter where the death happened. (Or even how, really. Or when.)

Nothing like the internet to allow people to jump to get fired up and jump to conclusions!  To be clear, my family was heading downtown and "on the way" we passed that intersection and the accident.  I was just telling a story, didn't realize it would turn into a neighborhood label rebellion.  Hope the guy ended up being okay.

^Don't take me too seriously. I don't mean to provoke any rebellions here. I do hope the fellow is okay. And I do hope we can find a way to tame the automotive dragon that bit him.

Maybe starting a car should be at least as difficult as logging into your bank account.

Idk I sat next to a MODOT risk management specialist who had to go photograph motorcyclist sliced in half by guard cable. He seemed ok

Sounds like it would be two photographs. At any rate, very professional.

So Saturday we were downtown heading east on Chestnut by the ATT building. I stop mid block as a car driving normal speed westbound (the wrong way on a one way street) is coming towards me. They turned right on to 9th, slowed to about 10-15 mph and then proceeded to run the red light at Pine and 9th, t-boning a SUV that hit the traffic signal box and almost hit the ATT building.

The hitting car continued north on 9th, bounced off two more parked cars at slow speed before stopping in front of Schnucks. I went to check on the SUV driver and when I came back the driver and passenger of the wrong way/light running car were standing there calmly smoking cigarettes.

I passed by over the weekend and was marveling at how a person could take out the blue box a foot behind the traffic signal but the signal itself looked OK.

You can't walk more than couple blocks in this city without seeing the aftermath of car crashes.

That’s a daily occurrence downtown

^Pardon me as I do a double take and eat a bit of my own medicine. Unbelievable. Glad it's getting better, but damn, we still have a long way to go. Also: more public transit and street calming now kthx bye.

I don't always agree with db, but I sure do appreciate his persistent optimism. We need more of that in St. Louis.

Do I slow down at yellow lights? Absolutely not. I speed up. Green means go, yellow means go faster, red means you didn’t go fast enough, and now I’m going to lay my entire upper body on the horn while I sit behind you, seething that I have to wait at a traffic light for thirty extra seconds.`

Almost got run over while biking yesterday at the STL Style intersection (Compton and Cherokee). Was returning home from a bike ride with my wife when a group of kids on a white sedan thought it was extremely funny to let me cross the intersection and then speed up to run me over while swerving at the last minute. This was probably the closest call I have ever experienced and I will definitely think twice before I take up my bicycle again.
