In the 21st Ward
In 2012 5,137 votes were cast on Prop R the last thing on the ballot. 5,658 for President
In 2016 4,261 votes were cast for president, the first thing on the ballot.

Citywide 2012 Prop R 130,578 President 144,066, 2016 President 132,487

Not everyone made it to the end of the ballot in 2012, but it seems like voters were pretty engaged.

PostMay 04, 2018#429

Turnout was way less in Nov 2014. The Board of Ed race got the moat votes cast at 66,109.
I'd think 2018 will turn out more than 2014 with the senate race on the ballot, but I doubt it'll come close to 2012.

PostMay 11, 2018#430

Even worse, they're going to put it on the April 2019 ballot.

As someone who semi recently moved from the city to the county and wants some kind of city/county merger, stuff like this doesn't help my case. If the city can't even get it together, how do they expect people in the county to change their minds and help a merger to happen.

I just hope the turnout is there to keep it at 14.

This is pretty embarrassing caudillo-style politics.

Just my thoughts...

I think it largely depends on how confident her office is in the results. A veto will be used against her as a direct attack on the AA community of St. Louis, which isn't something she wants come next election.

The redo has to pass by 60% on a low turn out election. The crowd against ward reduction will have to mobilize a significant campaign in order to rally a MUCH higher turnout from the north side to get 60%. Knowing that there is generally higher turnout in south city wards (which largely voted in favor of ward reduction), defeating it with at least 41% seems very plausible. That being said, why would she create a political risk if it doesn't stand a chance of winning?

Novel thought: Instead of playing politics, she should veto it because it is in the best interest of the city and region. And that little detail where we already voted on it...

^Politicians have to play politics or they don't get elected. There are times to fight that, but you really have to pick your hills to die on. After all, you can only do it once.

I spent a few minutes watching the BOA debate on the ward reduction topic via Youtube and I've never had a stronger urge to pack up my stuff and move out of the city than after that performance.

Me too. It's embarrassing how this is all going. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Even more ridiculous that Vacarro threw in with the bill's supporters and motioned with suppress debate.

This bill still needs to be third read and then sent to the mayor for her signature. No clue if Mayor Krewson has the courage to veto this, or if the calculation that it will likely fail to get 60% makes such a veto unnecessary.

Remember, folks, the alderman who introduced this bill was arrested for driving without a license, and had multiple outstanding traffic warrants. He's the poster child of why we need to reduce the number of these clowns.

I'm getting so tired of the St. Louis region as a whole.

"There's no plan!"

There's still years to make a plan. Had the BoA made a plan right after the 2012 vote, the argument today would probably be "That was too long ago. Some of us weren't here then. Do over"

Sharon Tyus is pure scum. I can't believe the racist sh*t she was spewing. "Let's reduce the aldermen, but keep all the black aldermen and get rid of all of the white aldermen". Disgusting.

I sincerely hope this does not pass. It would be much easier for my family to move to the county, and not have to deal with the challenges that come with living in the city. (dealing with SLPS nonsense, extra taxes, etc.)

I wish these aldermanic jokers realize that people can, and will, leave if the old guard crap continues.

If this passes, then I'm done. I will be looking to leave St. Louis as soon as I can. I've let so much stuff slide and defended St. Louis, but, this region is a disaster. There is nowhere to go to avoid it. The County is a fragmented mess and the City is incompetent.
