The xfl has more season ticket downpayments than aaf has by a significant number. They havent even given prices or team schedules. Also has already outsold all merch aaf sold its entire existence. And merch has been out less than a month. Fascinating #xfl #xfl2020

My source is not a league person, but a media person who talks to people in league. In order sales are high in st lois, Seattle and by. Houston is doing better than Dallas right now. Dc and Tampa are a bit behind. St Louis is almost double in merch sales than 2nd place.

^^^Note: "by" should be ny

Wonder if XFL sees an opportunity in expanding to San Diego and Oakland.  To me its odd that they weren't chosen in the first place.

The choice of Tampa Bay always seemed a little odd given the immediate presence of an existing NFL team and an already tight media market (Jacksonville and Miami competing for the rest of the state)

Seems like they should have been looking at underserved markets for their role out. Portland, Salt Lake, Memphis, Austin/SanAntonio, Louisville, Orlando, etc.  I realize you probably have to be in New York to be considered legit and probably at least one other major market (DC, Chicago, LA)

Also the biggest thing that gives me pause is league ownership of all the teams.  As frustrating as the franchise ownership model is in other leagues, i am not convinced consolidation of ownership is a better model.

I am guessing they didn't pick San Diego because the other league had a team there. Memphis, San Antonio, Salt Lake also had teams in that league.
I think sticking with the bigger markets isn't a horrible idea. You need a far smaller percentage of the population to buy in than the Memphis/Birminghams of the world.

You mean the previous iteration of XFL?  San Diego and Oakland are obviously ripe for a alternative league now considering the recent moves by the NFL.  SanAntonio/Austin and Portland have been passed over and are widely considered hot markets.  The others are a stretch but just looking at how the excitement around the initial rollout is shaping up I stand by my initial assessment of the city choices they made.  Tampa would make me the most nervous, I don't know why they didn't go to Orlando instead.

The league overall has to be healthy for it to succeed.  St. Louis being well supported locally is not sufficient to keep the league going.  It seems like the initial cities really need to be slam dunks for this to get through the first few seasons.  Especially considering its a one owner structure.  Not sure who did their market assessments but I think I would have made some different choices.

Correct. Those cities had a team in AAF and XFL wasn’t going to want to overlap them.

^^ Now that the AAF has folded is there a chance any of those teams could be brought under the XFL umbrella? That is should they actually prove successful this time around. Or are those teams still considered property of the former league? If not, the XFL might still consider new teams in some of those markets.

They could, but why bring in more teams already? You need to make sure the 8 you have work before you start spreading out resources. Expanding too fast has killed many businesses.

True. That’s why I prefaced should they actually prove successful. Maybe a season two or three expansion.

So glad St. Louis has nothing to do with this league anymore. Other than a lawsuit.

Hoping the XFL is the opposite of the NFL.

The team uniform design was unveiled today. Pretty simple in my opinion, but I expected to from being a "start-up" league.

Well I purchased 2 season tickets.  The games are going to last a little longer than I thought - I had asked a few questions when ordering.  The response I got was trying to keep the games under 3 hours (without saying how much under 3 hours).  I am excited.  I was told St. Louis ans Seattle are leading the pack for tickets sales.  Could be just a way to excite our city.

Since the seasons don't overlap, I wonder if there's anything to preclude currently unsigned NFL players, i.e. released players, free agents, etc. from playing in the XFL for the two month season, and the NFL in the fall, (short of the apparently low salary).  I'm not impressed with the announced talent so far:  TAYLOR HEINICKE?,  Jordan Taalolo Ta’amu-Perifanos?, so I'm curious about the talent level going forward.

If you know enough about football to not be impressed then you should know enough to understand NFL players need the offseason to physically recoup and not risk unnecessary injury

Edit: Okay, I missed the ‘unsigned’ bit so forgive the snark. But still think it’s not worth it if you have a chance at the NFL.

Yeah, it wouldn't be worth it if a player actually had a shot at the NFL, but the problem is they all think they have a shot at the NFL.  So the question is; how does the XFL attract even potentially NFL-caliber talent going forward?

Maybe let 18 year olds play. Don't try to compete with the NFL. Try to compete with the NCAA.

Talking to one of the front office guys at a soccer tailgate he said they are open to giving anybody a shot including college players who want to play an XFL season before trying to get on an NFL team over the summer. So I would assume an unsigned NFL player would be in the same boat. If you are a college kid with a good chance of playing in the NFL you probably don't take the risk but borderline guys might like the XFL paycheck.

The Arena Football League has apparently folded for good this time, so maybe those players are available.

Edit:  Ha, well nevermind, there are still four more indoor football leagues left...who knew...
