Thats great news, to hear that the retail space is being filled and that the development will be sucessful enough that pyrmid can get going on the Arcade.

While on the tour, several of the guides mentioned that a 5 star hotel was slated for the Arcade. When I asked which brand one person told me that they were in negotiations with Le Meridian. I only wonder how many more luxury hotels downtown can support? With the building of the Four Seasons on the Landing I fear we will be overbuilt. However I am not the expert that the developers supposedly are so maybe it will be alright.

What is going to happen with the Arcade-Wright Building? Are they making it into residential or a hotel or anything?

Pyramid Construction is developing the Building currently into a beautiful

renovation of both retail and loft space. The lofts will be for sale, not for lease.

From what I've heard this building will be one of the best downtown. It's going to be awhile before it's ready though. Otherwise, I would have considered moving there.

^I agree. In five years, this will be one of the best spots to be in. The construction around the Old Post office square will be complete along with ballpark village?..and the Arcade right in the middle.

I don't know what kind of work is underway there (if any), but it looks like the windows fronting Pine Street have been painted, and are now lined with Christmas lights.

I was told that Pyramid will be opening a sales office in the Arcade Building in January of 2006. They will be providing information on the building pre-sales at that time.

According to this article interior Demolition will start in the spring and actual construction work will start either in July or August.

Great news. To everyone in St. Louis who helped save these buildings, THANK YOU. I remember more than one occasion in the '80s when they came close to being torn down for -- wait for it -- parking lots.

I've spent much time in the arcade/Wright since 2004. The two story Arcade (mezzanine) in the middel will be emaculate when it is restored. It is truely a great example of Americas first shopping mall. Like many of the buildings downtown, excluding the neighboring Paul Brown, many were abandoned and left for dead. The tenants left much of their crap, including old machinery presses and furniture in the spaces.

- The arcade building is priceless and has more potential than even the opo.

- I wonder what the past owners (the ones who tried to condemn the arcade and many other historic buildings) think about this new reniassance dt?

I wish some of our older users would post stories or details from when they might have shopped at the arcade.

My question may hijack this thread into the retail conversation, but...

What do you envision and what will actually work for the Arcade itself:

1. upscale boutique shops

2. combining spaces for larger chain stores

3. fast food/take out

4. service businesses

5. art galleries

6. other?

Last time I talked to them they said they would start taking reservations in the summer. I don't know if they've started demo yet, but they have been cleaning it out.

There were signs on the street about a sidewalk closure permit, so i would assume a fence may be going up soon.

Anyone have a link to the site for the Arcade? From what its sounded like, the bottom floors will be retail and then condos above? Or is it going to be a hotel + condos? Keeping up with all the development in the area is tough!

I found a very interesting Blogger site call Irratonal Ecstasy -- "The Anti - Pop Culture: Music, exploration, and the unsanitary. As seen in the Riverfront Times and The St. Louis Post Dispatch" . More to the point, this site has a detailed tour of the Arcade/Wright Complex-- complete with many, many photos.

Check it out!!

WOW.

Great, great find. I have something of an obsession with this building, and I have always wanted to take a peek inside. Let me go on the record and censure "urban spelunking," but I can appreciate its fruits! Thanks for the link.

Is that his foot in the elevator shaft picture?! He's got no fear. Awesome pics... they really show how much potential this building has. Makes you wonder why beautiful buildings like this were left to rot while cookie cutter boxes were put up in places like Earth City.

Does anyone know what happened to the large light fixtures that used to be in the Arcade. I know some parts of the building are stored at the City Museum, but I haven't heard what happened to the fixtures.
