I feel like Cara Spencer is more with it on urban planning issues that this forum cares about. Feel like she has been orange pilled like us. TJ hasn't been hostile to these ideas, but Cara is a cyclist and I suspect would prioritize them more during her tenure.

TJ has also iced CS out during her term. I know CS was/is a competitor but IMO you shouldn't let politics and personal drama get in the way of getting things done

I feel that Gabe Gore is most responsible for any decrease in crime. He's not getting enough credit locally or nationally. There was tons of glowing media coverage about all the "progressive" DAs back when that was thing and almost all of them have been recalled or voted out (Price in Oakland is next). Portland "progressive" DA was just voted out and basically a Republican will be DA now.

Jones hasn't been a total trainwreck imo. She's had two things going for her during her tenure so far. Gabe Gore and ton of free money.

I had to edit the part about SF. They simply recalled one DA, Portland was the most recent. It's early.

What accounts for the crime drop before he took office? Or was that crime drop fake stats manipulation/unreported crime and after he was in, the crime drop real?

^Of course its all of the above:

Non-violent crime data is questionable; 2023 marked a regression to the mean after COVID (which happened nationwide), and a revived CAO helped keep the bad guys off the streets. I'm hopeful the changes made to policing (for which the Mayor gets at least partial credit), namely eliminating the residency requirement, mandatory minimum service years from Academy graduates, and the new CBA with pay increases, will keep the positive trends in place all the way down to 2010 (?) lows. Fingers crossed.

I agree I think there is an active action to change the crime narrative and some of it is a change in reporting non violent crimes. My opinion on this is based on my own experience and those around me.

That said I think Gore is doing a far better of putting convicted offenders away, and that is a great thing. Backlog down from 6000+ to ~2400 is great. As for our new Police Chief and Mayor getting credit for any of it? I'm a bit skeptical. The former is making sunshine law and police report requests difficult and the latter was a staunch supporter of Gardner. TJ stood on the sidelines in that scandal in a hope she would emerge unscathed.

I hate to give the man credit, but I think Andrew Bailey's subpoenas about nursing school did more than anything else to get her out of office.

She'd been straight up defiant up until that was thrown down.

^Agree, it was Bailey and the MO general assembly gunning for her that forced Gardner to resign. Possibly the only time the clowns in Jeff City have done the City a solid.

I recall Jones issuing a non-call to resign, suggesting Gardner "do some soul-searching" about her future, implying resignation was the smart move without directly calling for it. Make of that what you will.

Agreed. From what I saw, Jones was a bit of a late follower on the Gardner criticism, which isn’t surprising as it was delicate line to walk politically for her.

bottom line is incumbents almost never lose, the current one has support from biz community (GSL types), support from the President of the Board and still has to black and progressive coalition that's impossible to beat h2h

I don’t see how Cara can get above 40%. I like Cara and typically trust her leadership but unless there is something with Jones favorability that I’m not picking up on, the numbers aren’t there.
