I heard somewhere that construction could start within a month and it will be up by fall.

I know some of you were critical of this project, but it could be a real tourist attraction and motivate regional leaders and businesses to take a close look at beautifying the riverfront.

^ When you or someone else can explain to me how this fits into the long term vision for what the Landing should become, I will accept that it is a decent development.

And no, turning the Landing into something like Niagara Falls Canada or Gatlinburg, TN would be a colosol waste and a tragedy.

Is that because it will be so ugly that beautifying will become even more important? :D I kid. I kid.

With the Arch (an obvious tourist draw) so close, who is going to wait in line to ride this, having just waited in line to go up to the Arch? Doesn't the Arch make this proposal somewhat redundant? It's too bad the developers couldn't get their condo development off the ground-- that would've been a great impetus for residential development on the Landing.

No kidding, I'm pretty sure Lumiere Place would have strongly considered purchasing a few units to use as "high roller villas."

There is room for both the arch and the sky wheel. Why is everyone so pessimistic about the project?

^ agreed. There are all types of visitors to STL. A family driving across the bridge will see the skyline, bright lights of the casino and a ferris wheel lit up (that I think can look really cool) and it will apeal to all. For those who think it will not offer a cool view, just go to the four seasons deck and even though it is not as tall as the arch, it is awesome and people will want to see the skyline, river, etc from a 360 degree vantage point compared to a small sliver of window in the arch!

I don't have an issue with the concept, just the placement. I picture a Ferris-wheel as being a family-friendly tourist attraction. What other family-friendly tourist attractions exist on the Landing? It's a collection of bars, some restaurants and a casino.

We have a mall that is underutilized. Why not put the ferris-wheel on the mall that would pull people out toward the new sculture garden they are building? Doesn't the city own that land? They could have provided it to the developers and then this would also leave the parcel of land open on Lacledes Landing to develop as residential/retail when the market recovers.

This project involves new development downtown.

Thus, I support it.

And kids aren't the only ones who ride ferris wheels...

I'm not against the project per se, but I certainly don't see a reason to subsidize it either. There's enough TIF abuse west of Skinker Boulevard- I just think the city can find a better way to use that economic development tool and that this type of project shouldn't need a subsidy in the first place.

Actually, if you believe it wouldn't be built w/o TIF assistance, it seems like a pretty good use of TIF. The sky wheel should start generating city sales taxes as soon as it opens (and only 50% will be captured by TIF) and boost spending (and sales taxes) in adjacent non-TIF areas.

Remember what city we're in.

For every St. Louisan who comes along with a new idea, there are a hundred whiners who insist it will never work.

We can see the results of this attitude all around us every day.

Anybody willing to build anything to bring people to the riverfront should be given a medal. I say cram the riverfront with as much activity as it can hold.

I disagree. I think they should be given a trophy instead of a medal. (oh boy, this is going to stir the pot!)
