In the meantime I like the use of young cheap guys and rehabs (St. Louis LOVES rehabs) like Kip Wells. But eventually, despite the coup of the century, aka Chris Carpenter's contract, we will eventually have to play the free agent market.
I don't think that's necessarily true. The year after ARod signed his deal (and I think Manny signed his), the market rebounded significantly.
The next year Pujols signed for just 15-16 million, when he was worth much more under the ARod/Manny pricing scheme. Ridiculous pricing on players who don't perform make GM's unhappy. I'm not saying it will happen this year, but it certainly has in the past.

I said PITCHING was a scarce commodity, not overpaid 3-4 tool players.
If you build sufficiently through the draft, and create a farm system that can produce quality players...you don't need to play the market. Look at what Oakland has done over the years.
When you don't have the players in the minors, then you have to play the market. But Reyes and Wainwright are guys that we have worked to filter into the starting rotation for the last 3 years or so. We've got 2-3 legit pitching prospects down in A and AA.
I don't get overpaying for somebody like Weaver or another similar player, when you can give Reyes the chance he deserves. All signs point to Reyes being a better pitcher in the long run than Weaver, who's always been sort of hot and cold, and teases you with his abilities on to throw it away because of what is in between his ears.
The Cardinals were smart to save their money, and hold out for the guy they want later. So they can take on payroll should the right trade arise to make the team better for the stretch run.

Does anyone know where this is going? I just drove through the area and I have an idea. It could possible be the building just west of the packard lofts. 1227 locust (I think) A 2 story building that was for sale last month but no longer has a for sale sign on it. It is a really cool builidng... anyway it is just my guess.

The Business Journal reports that "Fifteen on Locust" will be an upscale steak house, lounge and banquet facility set to open this summer with 16,000 sf at 1900 Locust. The development will include 2,300 sf of office space.
