It seems like a lot of people in St. Louis seem to not care for our American football team, the St. Louis Rams. Yet, it seems like everyone seems to love the St. Louis Cardinals (baseball) and St. Louis Blues (hockey). So, why the hatred/disinterest in the St. Louis Rams? Is it because American football just isn't big in Missouri, or is it that our team sucks, or that our team has questionable moral issues.
I don't "hate" the Rams.
For me, it's a couple of things - 1) I've pretty much lost interest in the NFL. The games are too long and boring. 2) They play in that dreary dome. 3) They're bad.
I've traded the NFL in for REAL football on Sat & Sunday mornings on FSC and FSC+

I don't hate the Rams, I love the Rams and I'm pretty excited about the game. As far as comparing the Cardinals to the Rams, don't. 100+ years vs 15 years. The Rams are bigger than the Blues though, I'm pretty confident in saying that, more talked about bigger fan base more championships bigger league. The team has had 3 really bad seasons, you couldn't find anything nice to say about them. Horrible front office (fixed that). No direction (fixing that). Unstable ownership (fixed that). We still have a looming stadium issue that'll need to be resolved this decade.
I will say guys like Kevin Demoff and the Rams organization have been trying hard to reconnect with St. Louis and I commend them for that. Could you not make blanketed statements about St. Louis and the Rams though? It gets hard to have an actual discussion and it just turns into "nah-uhn" vs "uh huh".

I don't hate any of our local teams. If anything, I'm happier with the Rams than the Cardinals and Blues at this point. Why? Well, at least the Rams new owner and management appear to give a damn, which is more than I can say for the Cardinals and Blues at this point.
The Cardinals could and should be in first place by at least 5-10 games at this point of the season, but this year's team is perhaps the most underachieving team I've ever seen. Don't get me started on the team owners, the general manager, or the manager, as I would like to see all of them on their way out of the picture. And then we have the Blues, whose perennial mediocrity is only surpassed in sports by the likes of the Cubs. Sure, the Blues pulled off quite a coup by signing Jaroslav Halak to play between the pipes, but where are the goal scorers? Even the best goaltender is being asked for too much to win every game 1-0 or 2-1, and that's probably what the Blues are going to wind up doing. Perhaps I'm being negative, but I don't expect much from a team that stands behind Eric Brewer as captain material. I support all of the home teams and I like to see them do well, but my interest in the Rams is increasing while my interest in the Cardinals and Blues is waning.
I don't think people hate the Rams as much as they hate losing. And even though the Rams have a lot more promise with Sam Bradford at the helm, they are still coming off of a 1-15 season, so I think even the most dedicated fans are cautiously optimistic about the team's near-term future. I suppose there are still a lot of people out there that are turned off by the dismantling of the Rams in recent years, and God knows that watching Scott Linehan guide the team to the bottom of the ocean week after week was painful, but most people I know are excited about the team's new direction even if they realize it may take awhile for the team to turn the corner.

I think excitement is building again for the Rams with the addition of Bradford. The Linehan years were dreadful.
I'm actually starting to hate the Cardinals.
I'm actually starting to hate the Cardinals.
Growing up a NFL Center/American League fan and hating Dallas for stealing the North Stars I'm indifferent other then the fact that I enjoy my beer, peanuts and a good game in person any day of the week. But have to agree wholeheartedly that Rams as an organization will be leap years ahead of everybody else in town by next year. Stan K can put together an impressive franchise together if he is willing to front some of his for a stadium.
Cardinals have lost all passion even though it is playing in a new ball stadium and has one of the best fan base of any sport in the country. On top of it, stumbling on BVP by signing up with Cordish has put egg on DeWitt as well as the Cardinals board as far as those who don't follow baseball are concerned. Checketts plan was working pretty well until the equity partners smelled a profit. Now the Blues find themselves with no suitors and Checketts is a lame duck minority owner.
But their is hope, The Cardinals play have a lot more to do with motivation then talent. Next year could be easily a differnt story.
As far as BPV, time for the Cardinals board to step up to the plate, admit a mistake and dump Cordish. Instead, focus on getting a first class tower for Stifel Nichols started. Heck, put up a temporary green wall between the softball field and office tower. Anyone who knocks out a window gets a prize.
As far as Stifel Nichols, they also need to step up to the plate and speculate on an additional 200,000 sqf for their proposed HQ. Especially when your president sits on the Cardinals board and probably has his hands in the Cordish Deal. Their is no reason why a 500,000 sqf class A office building can't be built and every reason why an entertain mall shouldn't be built.
The Blues, Checketts is one step away (NBA team) from doing what Stan K did in Denver plus added a Opera House/Theater to the mix. I think it is a only matter of time before some one sees a great opportunity in the making and buys out the equity partners. The NFL saw a world class sports businessman in the making. In part due to what he put together in Denver.

Defense played well. Bradford, about a 5.0 to 5.5. To be fair, he doesn't have a lot to work with.
Instant replay is so boring. It just sucks the life out of the game. And even when they use it, they still can't get it right. I thought it was supposed to eliminate mistakes?
Probably the last full game I'll watch all year.

First off, I’m a fan of American Football, and I’m a Rams fan.
Why is it so common in StL to hear people complain about the Rams?
1. Historical football in StL has consisted of the Cardiac Cardinals, who sucked for years and seemed to grasp defeat from the clutches of victory on a weekly basis. And after leaving for Arizona like a flatulent in the wind, Bill Bidwell made a lot of people in StL hate football.
2. When they left, many people affiliated with the Chiefs or the Bears (for whom I’m still a fan; there can only be one Sweetness, after all).
3. Mizzou Tigers weren’t too much to hold on to. Sure, it’s NCAA and not NFL, but it’s still football. Anyway, they're not that local after all, and not all of us went to Mizzou.
4. There’s now a vacuum for football here. High school football can’t keep everyone’s attention, even with the fascination with high schools here. Wash U’s Bears? Div III, right? Not going to happen. And SLU, the farking home of the forward pass, doesn’t have a team anymore, hasn’t for decades.
5. We didn’t get the franchise in the early 1990s to Jacksonville (remember the Stallions?), and that made people hold onto baseball and hockey that much more strongly. We go ahead and get a new stadium construction contract anyways, and people distrust the monies at stake.
6. That said, our baseball and hockey teams have great histories and deserve their fan bases, lasting through baseball mediocrity and surviving the Blues’ Keenan years, when Keenan scared The Great One - Wayne Gretzky - out of town.
In come the Rams! Hell yes! Wait, they kind of suck, don’t they?
7. With our first draft pick, we choose Lawrence Phillips? And get rid of Jerome Bettis in the process? CRAP!
8. The Rams suck for a few years just as they’re trying to establish affinity with StL.
Aw crap, Trent’s gone for the season!
Who’s this Warner guy, our new third string?
Did he really just get here from a grocery store?
Whoa, lookit that!

HOLY CRAP, WE WON THE SUPER BOWL! THE GREATEST ONE EVER!
We ruled for 3 years. Aaaaand...
9. … then we suck again, when Warner loses his edge for a couple years. After all, we went from the Super Bowl to sub-500 immediately. I still blame Bill Belichek’s spying on the Rams’ practices in 2001 as the root of our downfall that year. And Brady, and Viniaterri.
10. In comes Bulger… and down he goes, again and again, until he has to get out. Our lines deteriorate, and we start to suck. For years.
Last year, we were 1-15. We flat out sucked, no way around it.
But when you make the Browns look like gold, you get the first draft pick.
Basically, the Rams have been a rollercoaster to their fans for a few years, and it’s been hard to keep the base attached. We’ve been traumatized with the Cardiacs, then their departure, then the lows, rise, conquering, and fall of our new team, one we’re still trying to adopt as our own. Many people treat the Rams like a stepchild they’re forced to love after losing their natural-borne child. It takes time, and dedication, and hope, and mutual trust. That said, there are plenty of good football fans here, who don’t give a care about who owns them as long as they keep a good team & keep them here, people who want football on TV, and jerseys to wear, and heroes to take on as our own. And while many people complain for little more than to sound fatuous and superior to another down on their luck, many will continue to cheer and believe. I’m one of these people, and as rough as it may be with no strong O-line for Jackson & Bradford, I – no, we – will still cheer. There’s a lot more of us than most realize.
It’s either that, or we’ve just got a bunch of whiny surrender monkeys out there who’ll never be happy.
Go Rams.
(And since historical fanship doesn’t die so easily – Go Bears)

Hmm cool info on the first forward pass in football.
Anyway, check out this rft post.
Anyway, check out this rft post.
Hah. I don't really care that much about football as a whole... and I care even less when the team is beyond awful.A new study by the media-research firm Nielsen Co. confirms what you may have expected about the St. Louis Rams. Not only does no one in St. Louis care about the team but neither does a national audience.
The study specifically looked at last year's season and measured the following factors for all 32 NFL teams: local and national TV rankings, mentions on the Internet and visits to the teams official website. St. Louis earned an index sum of 22 points -- 78 lower than the No. 1 team in the Dallas Cowboys.
I don't think anybody hates the Rams, unless your from LA. I think the losing has caused some to become numb to it, some angry, some just don't care any longer. The Rams came in 1995, so the tradition is not there. Most fans hold on to tradition, if their team is losing. If the Cardinals went into the tank for years, fans would still go to games, just in smaller numbers. The Rams, had a run in 10 years ago, but that is not enough. They need to be consistant winners for a long time. Then fans can develop a blind loyalty. On top of that, the Dome S*cks! If you have a loser, you can at least tailgate and sit outside on a day like yesterday. The Dome does not offer either option. Long story short, nobody hates the Rams, just frustrated.
I think they are on the right track, new owner, young players and hope. It is going to take a few years, so be patient and hope they don't move before they start winning.

Great to hear that. Too bad they lost a game they should of and could have won.
Are there any improvements to the Dome this season? Anything that makes the atmosphere better? I saw a lot of empty seats in the upper deck, was it really "sold out"?

Tried to do our best to watch the game at Over/Under yesterday. Sadly it appears that the Packers/Eagles game was more important to the viewing crowd as that was the audio they had going.
This is the third time I've tried to watch a Rams game there and they downplayed the Rams while featuring other contests. We won't be going back.

No improvements to the dome this year, although I think they've really improved the game day experience. Instead of a constant barrage of commercials, they've gotten creative, incorporating sponsorships into player feature videos that are actually fun and interesting (they have a feature on players' dogs, players' cars, etc.).DOGTOWNB&R wrote:Great to hear that. It was technically a sellout, but not a full house. I think the announced attendance was around 52k. I really wish the Rams would have pulled out a victory - it would have gone a long way toward selling out the game against Washington in two weeks.
I like that they feature the best games. That's why it's my favorite downtown pub.dweebe wrote:Tried to do our best to watch the game at Over/Under yesterday. Sadly it appears that the Packers/Eagles game was more important to the viewing crowd as that was the audio they had going.

The upper corners were full, so I think they did sell all the seats. But a lot of people just didn't come when they heard it would be on TV, I guess. or they went to the zoo since it was so nice outside.DOGTOWNB&R wrote:Great to hear that. Too bad they lost a game they should of and could have won.

I think they could improve the atmosphere in the dome a lot just by shining very bright lights up into the ceiling from the girder grid to make it seem like a bright sky. With the big gray dome ceiling inside, it feels like Seattle on a gloomy day. I believe studies have shown that just turning on a lot more lights in the winter can alter people's winter depression. I turn on all the lights in my West facing kitchen in the mornings and it feels more like a sunny morning. Same thing.
Are you listening HOK?
I love the idea of a transparent roof, like Ford Field in Detroit. It allows natural light in. I would love to see more natural light in that place. I don't think I want to stadium to be located anywhere else, even though tailgating would be better somewhere else. I want the Rams playing Downtown or close to it.
But in other cities with NFL teams I'd seriously doubt that would happen. I could maybe understand later in the season when the Rams aren't doing so well and there's a top-tier matchup with two darn good teams and possible playoff implications. But it's week 1 of the new season with hope surrounding a new quarterback. The Central Scrutinizer wrote:I like that they feature the best games. I know some sports bars have clubs where out of towners get together every week to watch their team so I'd understand them featuring other contests. But the fact that Over/Under is only a couple hundred yards from the Dome still confuses me they don't seem to care much for the Rams.

I think it is a combo of both...

I know a lot of people I spoke with in the days leading up to the game were lamenting the fact that they were being "forced" to watch the Rams game, when they really wanted to watch GB v Phil. Unless they have DirecTV & NFL Ticket, those people are out of luck. I see a place like O/U filling that void. Maybe a lot of people requested the audio for that game.dweebe wrote:But in other cities with NFL teams I'd seriously doubt that would happen. Wasn't the claim that the Ed Jones Done had to have the solid roof because of the winters here. So why does Ford Field get to have a translucent roof? I assume they saw our mistakes and decided not to copy them.
I remember seeing one Lions home game on TV where the sun was setting and a ton of light was pouring in from outside. Made me sad.
