Lol are you suggesting you want Tin Roof closed? That would absolutely be a negative for downtown
Midwestern
Why do you want Midwestern closed?

It’s not like downtown vacancies get filled quickly so Im struggling to see why we are wanting restaurants & bars to close in our downtown that needs people?

Bar closures often have a waterfall effect more than probably any other establishment as well. As one closes, it may drive traffic down at the one nextdoor too. They sort of feed off each other.
Because these types of establishments effectively enable crime and make downtown less safe, which also strains the police. Not all business is "good" business. Same reason why we need to shut down tons of gas stations across the city.

So many rape and sex assault cases come from bars and clubs like this, and they do nothing to prevent it.

Unfortunately there is a lot more coming, a lot of restaurants struggled with labor post covid; they raised pay but than cost of goods exploded, like beef. People are also starting to pull back on eating out.

We started 2025 with an officer having to shot someone dead at Wheelhouse, it and Midwestern make up 100s of 911 calls, it’s a drain on strained police and ems resources
I know Wheelhouse has had a couple issues, Midwestern always felt mostly laid back and unproblematic, but I trust you on that.

Still, I can tell you, the way to a more vibrant downtown is not less nightlife. Yes, young people are going out much less, but to make downtown an attractive place for single people and young couples without children to live (which is the demo that will look to live in a downtown area), we are still gonna have to have nightlife. We are a major metro downtown, not a small town subdivision. Nightlife will have to be a big part of the plan if we want to attract new residents, tourist and regular traffic from metro dwellers.

I wouldn’t mind our downtown nightlife being more filled out with taprooms, intimate music lounges and taverns to be more in line with St. Louis’s heritage and more compatible with other activity downtown rather than “clubs” but the reality is we have that Cupples corner and the inside of BPV for downtown nightlife right now which isn’t great.

Also, what was the second place that closed downtown that we were supposedly “wishing” for?

Wheelhouse shuttering. Had a nice 11 year run.

For that type of place, that's actually a really long run.

Lucy Q and Little Lucy in the Grove closing. Just went there for the first time. Sides were excellent. Brisket solid. Unironically I’d never heard of it prior to a rec from a RH resident.

Lucy Quinn + Little Lucy had great food but zero buzz. Unfortunately most times I went by they were pretty empty so I can't say I am surprised.

Beast Craft did much better business and they still couldn't make that giant space work. I almost think it should be turned into a little food hall concept at this point.

Sometimes spaces are cursed

I think the Little Lucy people are good and creative people so hope they try something else. Restaurant business is real tough right now, especially in the city. Maybe they can try a St. Louis soul food concept alone Wash Ave or something

We also need to get development back going hot in the grove. Had some projects die in recent times and there’s lots of opportunity along manchester. It will have its nightlife but to become a more well rounded neighborhood to support these type of things, it needs to be packed to the max with development.

At long last, Maryland & Euclid will be reactivated: https://www.stlmag.com/dining/two-new-d ... -west-end/

The new restaurants seem good enough to me, and I'm glad the Chess Club's corner space is actually being used for a restaurant instead of just more chess playing.

O'Connell's Pub is listed for sale.  I had hoped they had survived the construction.   Appears is was under financing for new owners and that fell through.  They are looking for new owners to keep the place open.

This is great for the CWE.  I was expecting the Chess club space but to also fill coffee cartel location and have it all curated Brennan’s team is killer

Not a restaurant per se but Work & Leisure on Locust in Midtown is closing.

Anyone else a little irked that they mentioned "declining city population" as one of their reasons?

Let's be honest. Midtown--where they are located-- is booming. Just seems like a copout. I'd have more respect for them if they blamed slow growth in our region. I doubt they would have had a better run if they were in the county but the Ole "the city is losing people" excuse is just too ripe a berry not to pick I guess.

Didn't Brennan's run that place? I went there once for a party and from what I heard it was pricey to book. I mean Brennan's seems pretty bullish on the city what with opening 2 new restaurants this year.
