Anyway, maybe the plane is utterly screwed up, but I think it's a bit early to say and based on past experience I have some faith the folks up by the airport can design and build a pretty darn good aircraft. It's . . . frustrating, to say the least that the current idiot is going to attempt to steal credit, but that doesn't necessarily make it a bad plane. And he'll be long gone by the time it enters service anyway.
Is there chatter that there's something wrong with the plane?

I think McDonnell used to have a reputation under old Mac for quality at a Scotsman’s price. I think the Air Force really liked Boeing’s performance on the new trainer jet. Lockheed on F22 and F35 underperformed at ultra high overruns. But they used to win anyway in spite of poor performance — Air Force turnover results in short memories. Boeing recently moved Defense Division HQ from St Louis to DC where execs can play golf and go to church with decision makers as Lockheed has done for years. This shows the move paid off.

I believe McDonnell Aircraft named the F-4 the Phantom, due to Old Mac’s interest in the occult. Then the Air Force & Navy chose the names Eagle and Hornet. Might this be called Super Phantom? Or Phantom III?

How about F-47 Spirit? A mod to phantom as well as Lindbergh’s Spirit of St Louis?

FWIW, I think the B-2 was named the Spirit. Not sure if they reuse names.

Not that I'm aware of. As far as I know it hasn't even left the drawing board yet. (Some tech demonstrators have, but most of the more reliable reporting I'm seeing the prototype hasn't been built yet. Which . . . well . . . it's all classified, so that's not really for me to know anyway.) I thought you suggested calling it "Veruckt" or "screwed up/crazy." (Somebody did. Triggering my bad German diatribe.)

It's all good. We may just have had a misunderstanding.

I still like the idea of going with some kind of banshee/phantom/voodoo occult name. That's where I was going with F-47 Reaper. Demon is another possibility. Maybe better. Goblin has become a little comical or it could have been a good one. And troll has too many other meanings these days.  Phantom III or Banshee II would be fine, but I was trying to think of new names in the same vein. (Not that anyone is terribly likely to ask me.)

I'd like Reaper, but isn't that already taken by a UAV? Not sure the AF would reuse it in that case (not sure how the naming conventions deal with drones in the mix).

Probably not, but the way they unleashed the F-117 during the Gulf War always makes me wonder . . .

Yes, you misunderstood. My name suggestions were jabs at the president because it's called the F-47 to please him, so might as well with the nickname too. The German ones are because he fancies German things, is of German heritage, and might think they sound cool without knowing what they mean. In that vein Reaper, Demon, and Goblin work.

Lmao that works on so many levels considering the NATO reporting name of the Russian Su-57 is "Felon".

This is a great thing - I remember when they lost out on the JSF in fall 2001 and the predictions were dire - Like shutting down everything after the last of the F18 orders were filled.

And I think they still are making some F-18s aren’t they? For another couple years?

I think so - they ended up getting a bunch of foreign orders

This is the new facility on Banshee where the old F-4 plant stood? (And the Mercury and Gemini plants, for that matter.)

Another Boeing crash; this time a Dreamliner (the first one to crash, I believe). No matter what caused it, this can't be good for their reputation

Probably not great timing, either, given the Paris Air Show is in a few days...

Sounds like one of the pilots turned off the fuel to the plane immediately after takeoff.
