If 100k gets a mayor in your pocket I think a lot more would be donating. More likely a middle finger to TJ after that spat about the property along 70.JaneJacobsGhost wrote: ↑Jan 28, 2025Bob Clark, who does not live in the city or employ anyone in the city (assuming Concrete Strategies’ relocation is finished), has donated $100K to the Cara Spencer campaign.
This puts me firmly in the Tishuara camp. Cara Spencer is going to serve to out of town business interests. We’ve had enough of that.
And given Jeff Rainford’s name was all over the BJ’s hit piece on the mayor about travel, I’d wager Clayco/Clark paid for that article.

Bob Clark says it's a "time for change" in STL by going back to the same moderate camp who ran the city from 2001-2021. Amazing stuff.

Yeah, he isn't winning any human decency awards for sure.
You know there's like $60M to $74M penned to go towards downtown right? I know the compromise bill is $74M but the BoA wanted to cut $14M. Regardless, it's not like there's no money going downtown.SB in BH wrote: ↑Jan 28, 2025Thanks for the detail, in which case I agree with all your other points.
That said, the feds will never do anything substantive about the cost of childcare. The Parson Administration was pretty good on this issue but I'm not sure the Kehoe Admin will keep it as a priority, and the General Assembly is wholly focused on cutting taxes and rounding up undesirables and concentrating them in some kind of camp. So I can see why Jones/Green/etc. are focused on this as a City priority. Doesn't make it a good idea, just an understandable one. I'd rather they spent the money elsewhere as you describe.
And the childcare program was one of the top options from the city survey over a year ago.

The moderate camp that oversaw the emptying out DT for the benefit of who? Suburban interests.Auggie wrote: ↑Jan 28, 2025Bob Clark says it's a "time for change" in STL by going back to the same moderate camp who ran the city from 2001-2021. Amazing stuff.
Yes, I'm aware of the various buckets under consideration. I was not aware of the plan to use the interest from the funds allocated to child care to pay for the benefit (as opposed to spending down the principal over time), and I was not aware of the pilot nature of the program. Those two facts together lead me to support it, and I credit the Jones admin for taking this approach generally--run tests to see what works and then adjust accordingly.Auggie wrote: ↑Jan 28, 2025You know there's like $60M to $74M penned to go towards downtown right? The survey that didn't limit people voting multiple times? That's like congress voting to give itself a raise. I don't think they should have allowed such a thing in the survey at all. Exclude city employees and their families from the survey and see how popular it is.Auggie wrote: ↑Jan 28, 2025

And the best part is that while DT was emptying out, they had people "feeling" like it was "revitalizing". And now the progressive camp, who's been in power for 4 years, seen the best GDP Growth in years, and seen a reduction in crime that rose under the moderate camp, is who gets blamed. Somehow.JaneJacobsGhost wrote: ↑Jan 28, 2025The moderate camp that oversaw the emptying out DT for the benefit of who? I assume it was water department members who got the water pipes so high?flipz wrote: ↑Jan 28, 2025The survey that didn't limit people voting multiple times? Interesting contrast of biggest donors to each campaign/pac
Spencer: Chicago based billionaire $110,000
Jones: local plumbers and pipe fitters union $10,000
Spencer: Chicago based billionaire $110,000

Yeah, I didn't like that survey, there was no way to guarantee it was actually representative. The water pipes being the top option was baffling to me personally, I know we're all in our own bubbles to some extent but I've never heard someone complain about the City's water, and people complain about all sorts of things.
IMO we have elections for the Board and the Mayor to set priorities, I think they shouldn't rely so much on other sorts of feedback gathering like surveys and town halls to set them. I'm open to some community consultation, especially with organizations that already represent City residents like unions, churches, neighborhood orgs, etc. but think it's not good to require residents to constantly be talking to elected officials in order to make sure a priority happens.

Interesting thar Jones' belated apology for the city's snow and ice response last night isn't being discussed here at all.
It's all over the local media.

^Ah yes, the Bob Clark that relocated Clayco HQ to a competing city’s downtown down the road - Chicago - says Jones has let the city down.
Bob, until you move Clayco back to the city that helped build it into the construction giant it is, I will say you have let us down. You could have built a beautiful new signature office right in our downtown and been part of the renaissance for the city that gave you all those local contracts. Nope, hit I-55 for the city that loves beating StL down the most.
In the last decade, it has been the business people who have let this city down. Leave and complain about downtown and do nothing to bring it up. It didn’t happen like magic elsewhere - their businesses bunkered down or returned to their downtowns and said this is the beating heart of the region.
So, I won’t hear Bob say downtown StL has been failed by politicians when he had an opportunity to be part of the change and chose to go the Chicago loop.
Hypocrisy at its finest
Let’s see Bob make a promise to come to downtown StL and build a new HQ before I take his opinion on anything.

Didn't he offer to build in I70 but the city chose to leave the lot vacant? That sounds like failed leadership to me. It doesn't have to be only if he was interested in Downtown.delmar2debaliviere2downtown wrote: ↑Jan 28, 2025^Ah yes, the Bob Clark that relocated Clayco HQ to a competing city’s downtown down the road - Chicago - says Jones has let the city down.

Yes he did propose putting a subsidiary at that site, not Clayco Hq itself. That whole argument is what has made him mad about this admin. It was a building for about 50 jobs that would have relocated from the riverfront and a new training center if I remember correctly.Rick Prieto wrote: ↑Jan 28, 2025Didn't he offer to build in I70 but the city chose to leave the lot vacant? ^100%.
Jones has her problems and I want to like Spencer, but if she's going to let Clark and the GSL crowd captain the ship then no thanks.

Was a different business, not Clayco. Apparently the city wanted retail in the area where he wanted to build.Rick Prieto wrote: ↑Jan 28, 2025Didn't he offer to build in I70 but the city chose to leave the lot vacant? I agree it was a blunder on Jones' administration's part but it shows he was not acting in good faith by immediately leaving the city and not working to find another location. He probably picked a lot where he knew the city wanted retail just to get a political win for himself.

Apart from Clark’s $110,000, these are all the other donations to the Spencer PAC (which is separate from her campaign account that can only take donations up to $2,600 and it has from all these same people) my guess is the PAC (which cannot coordinate with the campaign but it does) will be used as the negative attack dog

So her campaign is being bankrolled by StL County fancy boys. Yeah no thanks.
It’d be nice if Tony Messenger and Sarah Fenske reported on this

Tony Messenger had a column about how snowstorms topple mayors lol
^ and he’s right. Mayors apology acknowledges it in hopes that it will go away. Mayor should be praying for another crippling snowstorm to show she and her leadership learned something.

St. Louis mayoral race challenger nets $100,000 from Clayco exec
“The founder of construction giant Clayco has donated over $100,000 to Mayor Tishaura Jones’ top challenger in retribution for the company losing out on a north St. Louis project last year.”
This opener in the post story is brutal. Clark did Spencer no favors with this the way he framed it. Weather it’s true or not, a reader is left with thinking that Spencer would allow Clark any project he wants
