This is how Compton Ave. at Cherokee looked at 2:00pm today. If you want to park on Compton or Cherokee, good luck. You'll have to either climb a mountain of snow, or park in middle of the street. Needless to say, we haven't even been able to open our shop this week because it's pretty much impossible to park safely anywhere on the entire block. Compton may not be a "major" thoroughfare, but it's not exactly a little side street either. The fact that not a single snowflake has fallen in four days and the street is still looks like this is a sign that there is room for improvement when it comes to snow removal.. Not a good week for small businesses on Cherokee, I can tell you that. Also, it has caused us to miss important deliveries because the trucks can't load/unload anywhere safely. And with more snow expected overnight, we can assume it will only be worse tomorrow. Snow1.jpgSnow2.jpg
You posted two pictures of a completely down to pavement clear street. I don't know where you expect the snow to go.... would you rather them push the snow up on the sidewalk so we have more space for cars and less space for humans to walk?
Columbia MO used to push the snow into the middle of the street in a huge temporary snow median. I didn't particularly think it was a better alternative, but there are alternatives. (Silverton Colorado did that too, by the way. Though, for every inch of show we get they get feet. Probably more than one.) Anyway . . . yeah, this isn't really that bad. Does it make driving inconvenient? Yep. Makes walking even worse, since people don't know how to shovel a sidewalk anymore. (Or maybe no one has the time because everyone is exhausted trying to drive constantly.) I don't think this is so much an indictment of the mayor, or St. Louis government, as it is of car culture and our dependence on street parking and driving. I cleared my sidewalk twice: once after the ice and the first bit of snow, and then again after the second bit of snow. We could, in theory, all do that and then we'd have nice sidewalks. We could walk and take the bus. Bluebirds could sing and angels might dance on my front porch.
Or we could complain. About the weather. And cars. And politicians. And our neighbors. It might be more cathartic when your back is sore and your wallet is empty.
stlgasm, you're awesome and I hope you know I appreciate everything you do. But I think I'm with Auggie this time.
Oh, the weather outside is frightful,
But the snow is so delightful.

. . .
*peeks over the snow wall*
As long as you love me so, oh
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
