The STL Post-Dispatch homicide tracker has 279 murders in the St Louis metro through 12/24 vs 331 during all 2023. It looks like the whole region may see at least 10% of reduction. I didn't vet the source of this information so it's possible not all homicides from every department are included however I believe this numbers give us a very good idea. If someone knows a better source I'll be happy to see it.

^ I think what PD tracks is a little more broad than NIBRS homicide .

You’re right. Still unfortunate situation. The original story alert I received vaguely just said that there was a shooting outside the dome with police investigating. This may end up at 151 later on (same way 2023 ended up 160 months after it)

The last thing NOLA needed for their stats was to a post “15” minutes remaining in 2024.
My bad, happened after midnight.

You would have to walk out the door, down some steps, around the corner, across the street and you’ll be right at the domeDebaliviere91 wrote: ↑Jan 03, 2025I understand that the quote is intended to grab a headline, but the apartment is literally steps from the Dome.dbInSouthCity wrote:"just steps away from the Dome"

like a few years back a shooting literally next to the police HQ at 20th and Olive was presented as “close to City Museum”

I was down there the morning after this happened. The apartment it happened at is right at Cole and 7th, across the street from the backside of the Dome. I don’t know how close it has to be for you to be ok with referencing its proximity to the Dome.dbInSouthCity wrote:You would have to walk out the door, down some steps, around the corner, across the street and you’ll be right at the domeDebaliviere91 wrote: ↑Jan 03, 2025I understand that the quote is intended to grab a headline, but the apartment is literally steps from the Dome.dbInSouthCity wrote:"just steps away from the Dome"

I don’t know what the incident from a few years ago at 20th and Olive has to do with this at all.

The issue is that it is presented as if it is outside the dome doors. If it was inside an apartment building, I don’t think it should be presented as if it happened out in the street.Debaliviere91 wrote: ↑Jan 03, 2025I was down there the morning after this happened. I don’t get that impression. The second sentence of the article says it happened at an apartment.delmar2debaliviere2downtown wrote:The issue is that it is presented as if it is outside the dome doors. I don't think its unfair to use common landmarks to identify the area a crime like this occurred, it gives the general public an immediate understanding. That said, I do agree that the way editors frame a lot of headlines does the city a disservice.
I really like your optimism that people made it that far after the headline.Debaliviere91 wrote: ↑Jan 03, 2025I don’t get that impression. If a person was shot death at Berry Hill Golf Course during an altercation arising from a gambling dispute, you think it would be appropriate for the news to describe the murder as taking place “mere steps from Lambert International Airport”?
- 98
Can't it just be framed as "shooting inside an apartment building across the Dome"? Is that so hard?
- 9,566
So many were robbed and held at gun point that there isn’t a single story about it and the crime map shows one simple assault near its building in 2024. Scary
- 1,620
Assault was at 1234am, not a timeframe that would garner concern for most employees.
Yes, because few people would know where BHGC is without additional context. "Located to the west of Lambert International Airport" or something similar would be fine to localize the event, particularly in broadcast news, IMO. I would imagine they are more likely to say something like "Dispute Leads to Shooting near Boeing Campus" or similar.JaneJacobsGhost wrote: ↑Jan 03, 2025Ok, indulge me?Debaliviere91 wrote: ↑Jan 03, 2025I understand that the quote is intended to grab a headline, but the apartment is literally steps from the Dome.dbInSouthCity wrote:"just steps away from the Dome"

Crossing the street, to me, IS steps from the dome. But I walk a lot. Maybe for the literal or lazy "steps" means only 10. Maybe it means a quarter mile. I don't know how that gets interpreted in JeffCo. I understand your point they sensationalize headlines to get clicks and reads, and connecting these crimes to major or popular attractions is certainly a detriment to the perception of downtown.

Steps away means 3-5 steps
The shooting, again inside of an apartment was by my estimation about 950 steps away.

I agree there are opportunities to criticize the media for sensationalism downtown. This ain’t it. Nit picking the number of steps you think warrants a callout is silly.

You mused about how many steps. Just giving you a guess. And this type of article is exactly it
- 1,797
What a load of BS. The most logical inference to draw from the title and first sentence is that a person was shot on the street just outside the dome. Not that a person was shot inside a house across the street from the back of the Dome. This is 100% sensationalism.
- 1,620
"Across the Street" does us no better service than "Steps from..."
Based on DB's guide to near north side homicide above, it was within very close proximity to the dome.
Is it based in truth. Yes. Do we like it? No.

The point is not whether it’s true.
It would be true to title the article:
“Woman Shot Dead Not Far From Arch Grounds”.
“Woman Found Dead of Apparent Gunshot Near Patrick Henry Elementary”
It’s inappropriate to paint a misleading picture of what happened which this article’s title and initial sentence (the only part most people will read) absolutely do.
