So what is the 133 number? 

^ that may be KC's count including justifiable homicides. The reason I thought KC's daily homicide report may not count justifiable homicides is that it notes "officer involved shootings" are not counted but it doesn't mention anything about justifiable homicides by civilians.

We are at 9 (115 for the year) homicides heading into last day of the month, would be a first single digit September since 2012.

Total crime through Sept will be out Friday. Homicides as of this morning are 117 vs 123 last year as of today

It’s an interesting datapoint that murder is down -5% but shooting incidents are up 6%. Bad aim?

Came with a nice overall report update too. 

St. Louis Police adopted CompStat in 2023 after the new police chief came in. That's why the data chart looks so much better. They also redid the entire website, so it looks 21st century and not 1997.

Was just told by someone that they've seen reports that Downtown West has heavily spiking crime rates. 

Any truth to this? DB?

Total is down 20% but what’s up is people getting into arguments and shooting at each other mostly between 1 and 5am

I think we finished last Oct with 139, so will definitely head into the final 2 months in a good place for a y2y reduction again.

I remember when Jan 2024 was higher than last and people said “well there goes the chance for another decrease this year”

I don’t know how much we’ll fall in the rankings because murder and violent crime is down so substantially across the country as well. We should focus on reframing the narrative on crime locally, which will take some time.

The lists are what hurt our perception and growth though. It’s one of the first things somebody sees when researching St. Louis. Social media posts and videos circulate it often. Unfortunately, I think it’s a reality that we will be compared per capacity with other cities. A few small annexations and we fall completely off those lists but we are boxed in.

It is also interesting amidst the streak that local news posted stories saying “violent crime surge weekend”. I know violent crime is more than homicides but still, come on. I don’t open those anymore

Right; New Orleans e.g. had a really rough 2023 and surpassed STL City in per capita homicides but this year has been much better and once again is below our rate. (But like many cities, and unlike ours, it's still above pre-pandemic levels there. Memphis I believe is in a similar situation.) It looks like only Birmingham and Jackson, MS may be the only cities 100k+ in population with a higher homicide rate than ours so far this year.
While we should promote our declining homicide and violent crime rates, the best way to get off the Top 10 lists is to make contiues progress and have far fewer homicides... y.t.d. we have the 14th highest number of homicides in the U.S. and that's the problem we need to solve.

True, however we also know that for locals it's very useful as it would prevent people from leaving the city and making people living outside the city more comfortable to visit. Less population loss is a factor that over time will contribute to the per capita murder rate. Even without getting out of the top 5, the impact of this reduction is a huge win for Downtown because a lot of the reduction of traffic has to do with the local perception of crime. Not really because downtown is that unsafe.
