I think we are at least 7 days without a homicide
We are 36 hours away from 2 week homicide free.
Nah someone got killed in Hyde Park last night.

This mornings UCR didn’t list it as a homicide.  Not all killings are criminal homicide, some are self defense, city has about 6-12 of those a year,  it used to be much rarer before MO GOP expanding self defense laws

I’m aware. But it will most likely end up being classified a homicide. Either way, the issue is gun violence.

You’re trying to make a point about violence trends overall in the city, and I agree. The progress is worth celebrating.

Amazing stuff - we need an outlier month like we had in November (5) last year... let's hope we can finish nice and low for the year. 🙏

Reading between the lines, it sounds like many people stood by and watched this happen. How do you not intervene?

People watch and record what happens instead of helping. Probably because of decades of identity politics.

The problem is these days intervening in any meaningful way carries a not insignificant risk of being shot.

shots fired happened to me
If possible lay on the ground flat
Once being in that situation of the pedestrian on a street with shots  being fired around me and people running one really can NOT be certain where the shots are emanating from.
If you are in QT or similar lay flat on the floor
Bullets come down from being fired but  being still and flat to the ground (behind a vehicle/a structure/ floor) one has a better chance than being that fleeing person who just might be fleeing TO the shooter

Anyone know what happened near the Basilica last night?  Property Damage and shots fired reported at 800pm - ish.  Large police presence after.

Someone used construction equipment to vandalize a statue on the cathedral grounds. Same person apparently shot at an unoccupied car.

I was in the area. Seemed to me like it was a person with mental health issues having an episode. He got a hold of the construction equipment in front of the Church and knocked over a statue. Plus he was firing shots at random.

There will be some blame given to the construction company.  You can't leave those with the keys in it!

2 double homicides in the city and 1 in KC yesterday evening/overnight.

KC had three murders last night.

If I'm not mistaken, they're still leading St. Louis for the year with a narrow margin.

Bad night for both cities.

^ A bad night indeed.

Yes, KC has 116 homicides ytd 116 v. 113 for STL City(counting the two double homicides). However, I believe their daily homicide report may include justifiable homicides whereas ours only counts murders; we'd have 120 when including justifiable homicides. KC also is below last year's record high, fwiw, but above 2021.

CURRENT YEAR HOMICIDE PREDOMINATE CONTRIBUTING FACTOR listing for KC, shows 133 which includes 14 under defense.

Kansas City's rate is definitely down from the last two years. They're on pace for 162, which would fall well short of 2023's 185 and 2022's 171.

PostSep 19, 2024#9824

^^ So KC does count justifiable homicides?

What seems really, really bad over in KC right now are smash-and-grabs. The mayor is even considering creating a fund to give $3,000 to affected businesses.

I've heard of a few smash-and-grabs in St. Louis (Hartford Coffee Co., for instance), but nothing like I'm hearing about out of Kansas City. Seems like dozens of businesses have been affected over there.

I don’t think they do. 116 is the top line number.
