I hope they're applying for SS4A money. Or does that study they got SS4A money for last year have to be complete first?

Since Raineri Construction appears to be the low bidder, we'll see this finished sometime around 2027.

I hope the Cardinals can do something at the southern terminus of this. Pretty dumb to elevate the pedestrian experience just to have it end at BPV, where the sidewalk leads you into the parking lot.

They never use the three car entry lanes to BPV at 7th. They're used to park tour buses and such regularly. But I'm assuming they want to keep it configured that way for 81 nights a year.

Is this bike lane protected in any way? Are they planning "Armadillo” lane dividers or anything similar?

PostJan 19, 2024#31

I looked over the plans from the SLDC plan room, and I'm glad to see that the majority of the tree wells made it into the final design, 37 to be exact. Looks like they removed the trees that were supposed to be on the east side of 7th along the RRX building, but I'm not going to complain about that (although it would help partially disguise the decay). Regarding bollards, they ARE installing the Zebra lane separators like those that are installed on Union, so I'm glad to see that as opposed to paint only.

I understand why the Cardinals wanted 7th, but 8th leads to the main entrance of the convention center. The 7th street improvements don't even go all the way to the 7th street convention center entrance at Convention Plaza. The streetscape along 8th is so much nicer as well, but I guess that could be an argument for why 7th deserves the investment. Just nitpicking. Excited to see this implemented.

Construction to begin on $3.6M project linking Ballpark Village with America's Center
Work on the $3.6 million project will start in the coming weeks, officials with the city of St. Louis and business group Greater St. Louis Inc. said. A specific start date for the project, designed to better connect Ballpark Village to the America’s Center convention center, has not been released.

The project will include adding new sidewalks, trees, lighting and bike lanes on Seventh Street between Ballpark Village and America’s Center. Ballpark Village, the mixed-use entertainment district adjacent to Busch Stadium, and America’s Center are located six blocks apart on Seventh Street, between Walnut Street and Washington Avenue. The route includes the Railway Way Exchange Building, the 1.24-million-square-foot building at 615 Olive St. that has been vacant since 2014. The St. Louis Development Corp. and Greater St. Louis Inc. said last week they will develop a plan in the next 120-days “for bold action” on the Railway Exchange Building, as well as downtown’s vacant Millennium Hotel.

Do any big hopes really hang on this project? I thought it was just a relatively minor improvement of one street.

I am very happy this project is happening, but we need this x10 downtown just to keep up with our peer cities

Unless those ugly garages get redevelopment, it's not going to have much impact in my opinion.

I agree with you! Those garages need to be torn down & replaced with something substantial such as new apartments doesn’t have to be tall just something that’ll add foot traffic & more development. This off subject but I truly hope we get to a point where we can host the DNC convention likely won’t happen in my lifetime but hey I can dream.

Those garages are not going anywhere today, tomorrow, or in 2030 or 2040.  Literal, best and only hope is to fill all the retail bays in them

Pretty sure those garages are used by employers in the nearby office buildings like Met Square, Peabody, 100 Broadway, and 200 Broadway. I think the city could push for renovations maybe to make the buildings look more attractive and attract more retail tenants, but those garages are pretty needed for those buildings to keep tenants happy.

they could have torn them down if when they renovated Kiener plaza they had added several levels of underground parking there.  That would have been EXTREMELY complex to do because it requires multiple parties being in agreement but from a pure capacity perspective it could have worked.

For now take solace in the fact that the garage at 200 N 7th is on it way out.  Aim for a better balance of uses there.  Also an analysis of the capacity usage of the Kiener garages would be helpful understand the potential to remove the Kiener garages.  The biggest issue is that they are incredibly old garages so at this point the financing is long ago paid off and every dollar brought in is pure profit.  Until maintenance costs exceed revenue it is difficult to motivate a replacement.  If for instance they were condemned like the Convention Garage, or the one at 200 N 7th or the one at 1122 Locust revenues will likely continue to outstrip maintenance costs.

Easiest is to commission some massive murals to wrap the entire thing.  But, for some reason or another, I was under the impression they were City owned.  Went to look at them and they're owned by out of town entities.  Is that correct?

Easy yes, costly yes. Probably $250,000-300,000 per garage

Just slap an aluminum shroud or dynamic wrap on it along with some LEDs.

My point being exactly that it isn't City-owned, correct? I'm not sure we can just slap anything on it at all, unfortunately.

And $600k to beautify a blatant Downtown eyesore sounds pretty cheap.  They already have murals popping up all around the City.. just seems like an obvious candidate if the owners are open to it.

Each ward gets 2 murals 50/75k range. 14th ward portion of downtown used one of the 1 on the City SC mural next to city park
