The breakfast type restaurants in Clayton is getting crowded. But most have recognizable names and draw from outside the area a bit.
Rooster - coming
First Watch - coming - still don't get a need for this one to come back with brentwood and Ucity locations
Original pancake house
Half and Half
City coffee and creperie
Kingside Diner
Herbies does a brunch also

probably others I missed
First Watch is coming back to Clayton?
Yes. Going in Forsyth pointe

The old Clayton location used to make a killing off the Wash U students. Seemed almost like a dining hall at times.

Must have done well seeing they are bringing it back even after adding the other two. I just always picked half& half and the creperie above it so I never went. Probably would rooster also now. But I know it has plenty of fans.

Diego’s is my vote. It’s only a couple minutes away, the food is great and the atmosphere is a must. I seriously can’t recommend it enough, it’s a hidden gem.

I like the food there but have 2 gripes that have kept me away lately.
Almost every time we go the patio is almost empty and they will tell us we have to sit inside because it’s all reserved. It’s a little hard for me to believe it’s going to fill up in the next half hour when we are there at 4. Most of the time we just end up leaving and walk to Clayton to go somewhere else.
I also am not a fan of how they changed their happy hour menu around to less items on different days, but it is nice it’s all day. So that’s a trade off

That’s restaurantspeak for “we can’t seat you there because we don’t have staff”.

I’d normally agree with that except they say they can sit us inside but not outside and outside literally will have 2 tables sat. So it’s hard for me to believe they can’t handle another outside especially with the way it’s set up. They also basically do all runners and you order on your phone outside, or at least they did last time we ate there.

I’ve been places where they aren’t sitting areas because of short staff. This situation didn’t have that feel to it.

Sounds like Starbucks is likely coming back to 7645 Wydown Blvd.

^Wasn't that the original union store in the area? This smells fishy to me, I'd love to see it investigated more thoroughly as a possible case of union busting. Biz J isn't going to do that, of course. But it'd be nice if someone did. Or am I mistaken about which store this is? In any case, I can't really get excited about another Starbucks. So many much better uses for such a prominent corner.

Looks like the one at Lindbergh and Clayton (Frontenac) was the first.

I don’t think this was a union one but I’m not sure.

^Apologies, then. I can't find any evidence that one was ever unionized. I'm jumping to conclusions.

Went to Jinzen for the first time last night. Still no liquor license, went to 5 star beforehand for a drink, but I enjoyed the food. It was packed. I’ll be back.

JP Fields structure  demolished today. Almost clean down. No idea as to the future of another location of the bar or what is to come for this lot.

Amazing that one delivery truck hitting the corner resulted in that building having to be torn down.

Appears to be a Native foods going in at 33 N central. Should fill that building out. Looks like it is only in a couple other cities. Plant based menu.

Two things happening near Wydown/Hanley:

-Matt McGuire of Louie and Wright's Tavern is opening a new grab and go market at 7628 Wydown. "Box Hill Grocer" with prepared hot and cold items designed for quick pick-up. It's slated to open in late September, with likely hours of operation from 9 a.m.–7 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

-Starbucks is reopening sometime this summer, unannounced date. My contact in one of the restaurants next door to that corner told me they're stopping brunch service on Sundays, partially because Starbucks has an exclusivity clause in place, where only they will be able to sell coffee in that block.

How do you get an exclusivity clause to be the only one to sell coffee when you are the new business coming in?

Well...the thing is..it's not a new business. It's a re-opening business...and that term pre-existed in its former iteration as well. Basically, it's a restrictive covenant Starbucks outlines in their lease terms, for deciding to open their doors. That wards off "competition" that could infringe on their business. But it's so far reaching, even the restaurants in the same block can't literally serve coffee....it's corporate BS, up there with the sort of tactics entities like Wal-Mart try to employ. They can claim they're anchor tenant and because of their sway in the area, they deserve the exclusive right to provision that certain product.

They do it in other places all the time too. It's not new.

That's so lame to kill brunch service because of Starbucks, I could even maybe see an exclusivity clause on grab and go coffee but I don't see brunch substantially impacting the business of Starbucks

A property owner can’t unilaterally implement a restrictive covenant. How did the owner of the Starbuck’s parcel get the other owners on board? Does one person or group own all of those buildings?
