Not sure where to post so will do so here:

Wife and I had date night last night and I noticed at 2 locations we visited the sales tax was over 12%  I've been conditioned to accept 9.5-10% but north of 12% is staggering.

Is there a publicly available resource that tells you the total tax rate for all the TIF/CID/Special Tax Districts, etc.?

Unfortunately it's a PDF and not a sortable table or a site you can query against.  But search ST LOUIS and you'll see there are a number of areas in the City now at 11.6790%
  • Foundry
  • Wash Ave
  • South Grand
  • Ballpark Village
  • Union Station
  • hotels

There must be a half percent increase in some areas as I saw 12.179% last night.

Unless someone is collecting too much tax and pocketing the difference. Either that or there's a change between January and now.

I've been preaching about the high sales tax for years, I travel constantly and have never seen 12% in the USA before. I grew up next to Canada and they were at 15%, which helped pay for the healthcare system.  Even some of the retail districts around here are 10-12%.  I've made big purchases (laptops etc) on the road in Wisconsin where it's 5%, or I've driven to the next county over or even IL for TVs to save a few %.

Between the high sales tax, earnings tax, personal property tax, it's not exactly as cheap of a place to live as many make it out to be.

Help me understand the math

You buy let’s say a $750 laptop, save 3%? in Illinois or $22.5 but you spend an extra hour in transit, gas and wear and tear….you should always value 1 hour of your free time the same amount you get paid at work.

You only need to go down to South County. IIRC they're like "only" 8.5% down there because the stores are old enough to not be in special taxing districts or paying on TIFs for developments. So the Best Buy, Home Depot etc are where to go for big ticket items.

There's a lot of things that you need to drive out of St. Louis city anyway to actually buy at brick mortar if one were so inclined. Laptops, for example. There wouldn't be anywhere real place in the city to buy a laptop. There's a ton of items like this that would not readily be available anywhere within the city limits. I suppose the retail desert is kind of a blessing in a backwards sort of way. They can sneak the 12% on a dinner bill pretty easily though. Most people aren't paying attention or will let it slide on occasion.

I certainly value my time more than that, but in reality I don't live in a bubble.  I'm outside the city constantly. If I happen to be out and about near IL or St. Charles CO then I've made my big purchases there, but the laptops I was referring to are $1500+ and I've bought them in WI while on work trips and saved a fair amount.

My shipping zip code here next to forest park is 10.25%, insane.  For larger purchases/equipment for my business I've had shipped to an IL address I use to save a few %, once I have my office built in IL I'll be shipping things there regularly.

In reality we spend far more than the $1500 every other year on appliances in restaurants in the city, I suppose I should be more upset with continual calls for increased sales tax as it relates to my dining habits.

The tax at a restaurant in the east Loop is over 12.
Of course I'd rather the sales tax be lower, but I'll buy in the city or online to pay the sales tax here instead of some TIF warring suburb.

Agreed, I make a concerted effort to spend my money within the city limits, as practical.

To be fair I was going to Edwardsville already on business and had my mileage reimbursed. Laptop was around $1300

Owners of Five Aces BBQ have opened a new bbq restaurant on the Laclede's Landing at 724 N. First Street, it’s still in soft launch phase where you can order online and pick up as they work on setting up the space for full service this spring.

This is at least the 7th new Downtown St. Louis restaurant opening or about to open in 2024 already including;

Cobblestone (also on the Landing, from owners of Cafe Piazza)

Hot Pizza Cold Beer at 6th and Washington opens Friday

Venezuelan Amaizing Arepa Bar at 14th and Washington opens mid Feb

Ramseys Kitchen at Four Seasons

Fielders Choice at 1 Cardinals Way

secret yet to be announced restaurant at a secret yet to be announced location 🤫

That's too bad about Catalyst Coffee.  Leaving behind a coffee desert.   Do you know if the Art St. Louis space is staying or leaving?

Yes. They are a packaged deal, revenue from
the coffee shop goes to Art STL

I assume the Kranzbergs gave them free space because their current space is also free, park pacific doesn’t charge them rent.

Good Press is a couple blocks away in 21C and has excellent coffee. Not to mention Blondie's, Anchor Room (meh) and the new Rated Test Kitchen Cafe opening.
