per 100,000 basis, violent crime is down 65% compared to 30 years ago
I realize this is no solace to a crime victim today, but it was so much worse in the early 90s, which has been forgotten, people too young/not born to be aware, or ignored by those trying to portray "crime out-of-control" and cities as "crime dens" for political gain.
^Totally agree with this suggestion for city/county. Also, good reporting DB!pattimagee wrote: ↑Jan 07, 2024^Thanks DB - really awesome stuff.
Would be nice to take advantage of these wins... I wonder if GreaterSTL shouldn't try and have the metropolitan and St. Louis City/County crime statistics combined and ready before all of these 'ranked city crime articles' come out. Also seems like a good idea for the PR firm to do the same if we hire one out?
You can google search who does them, contact them before they even start on them, and offer the statistics ready to go ahead of time. Offer an explanation as to why we're different. Probably not worth it, but maybe worth a try?

Welp, celebrating the decline was fun while it lasted. January is above last year with a week to go. I think we’ve all acknowledged it but it’s going to be very difficult to follow last year with another drop.

We all can agree that calendar years are nothing but a concept for separating time periods and mean nothing. We should be looking at the general downward trend as a positive sign.addxb2 wrote: ↑Jan 24, 2024Welp, celebrating the decline was fun while it lasted. January is above last year with a week to go. Can we add Arnold's population to the denominator for STL crime rates?

Months might be irrelevant to nature but are very relevant to society. Months influence employment, business ops, personal finances, social stresses.stlurbanist wrote:We all can agree that calendar years are nothing but a concept for separating time periods and mean nothing. That being said… January 2024 was terrible for St. Louis. 20 homicides. 10 last year and 16 the year before. A quick estimate using data from the last decade shows January represents 7 to 9% of the year end total. The best was in 2013 when January represented 12.5% of 2013 shootings (15 of 120)
Optimistically, with a 2013 rate, 160 to end 2024 but realistically I think St. Louis ends the year closer to 200.
All of this assumes leaders aren’t trying something new and effective.

In 2023, we benefited from things like getting guns off the street, incarcerating some repeat offenders, and some macro trends post pandemic that led to the impressive decline in murders.
As I’ve said before, I don’t expect continued to decline in 2024 as it’s difficult to continue to improve when we haven’t really addressed many of the fundamental drivers of crime.

I don't think we can extrapolate a month with any certainty, for example we had 15 in January of 2013 and ended with 120 total... but I do agree its not a good sign for the year. Let's hope its just an aberration.

Significant decline in crime in January across the board minus +6 on homicides.

There is a significant jump in “Society” crimes, particularly in “Weapons Law” violations, hopefully that indicates we are still aggressively pushing to get guns off the street.

Yeah that was the big focus in 2023, it was up 35% over 2022
Downtown and Citywide
Fox News has one of their morning show hacks here today and they are presenting alternative facts (lies) about our fair city such as STL is dealing with a record high crime rate.
They had a state senator on who actually sounded afraid to even be within city limits. Pure propaganda.

I tend to agree with you in that the article seems to be making a bigger deal of the data discrepancies than they should be. They are still directionally accurate.Trololzilla wrote:Lol the Business Journal is now running straight-up anti city propaganda OpEds:

I do think the city would stand to benefit from more transparency, or even just bragging a little more about the improvements to crime numbers and the why behind it. There seems to be a lot of people who still believe crime rates are underrepresented, and I’m not just talking about suburban boomers.
