Nobody wants to mention or talk about the Clayton murder in the Crime Thread.

Who says no one wants to talk about it? There have been nearly 300 murders in the St Louis region this year. Certainly not all of them get mentioned here.

Car burglary gone bad, sounds like a super typical STL story.

It appears the white folks at The Bail Project got another innocent Black man killed.

Why couldn't they and the judge see the future with perfect certainty?!

I think it would be unwise to rush to judgement on this one, as you are doing. Details continue to emerge.

Last night a neighbor caught a group of six men checking cars and clouting windows on his camera. Called it in at 11:45pm. This is early for activity of this type and very alarming given size of group.

Police failed to respond. Another incident in long list without response and reporting.

What neighborhood was this in?

What exactly should have been reported, like housing casing, there is no reportable crime or a crime at all until the break in happens.

People shouldn't report suspicious activity? That's certainly a take.

It’s not that wild of a take. Reporting “suspicious activity” is a long known synonym over policing minorities.

But it’s not over policing minorities in that example. It would be nice if we could get an appropriate response from our police in that situation instead of nothing.

What exactly about "window clouting" isn't a crime?  [EDIT] Is "breaking car windows" leave little enough room for you to make false inferences while claiming my claims have no claim to police response?  I do not understand why you want to defend this so ardently.  These anecdotes I present are from someone, and a neighborhood, that respects and appreciates the police.  We want more of them, not less.  I feel you are a champion of the "decreasing crime" narrative, one based on foundationally flawed statistics and with little thought for user experience. ^Agreed, and I'll point out this was on private property, as they are one of only a few houses that have a driveway here.  So Trespass as well.  Definitely warranted a squad car.

Just having the police drive down the block in a timely manner would help. Make their presence known.

I think "clouting" is not a very commonly used word. I've literally never heard that word in my entire life until now. I'm familiar with the word "clout" when used as a synonym for pull or influence (ie, he has a lot of political clout), but I had no idea it is also used as a transitive verb meaning "to hit forcefully".

Anyway, I learned something new, so uh... thanks, I guess?

Monthly crime data on the SLMPD website only goes back to 2009 so that's as far as I can go back but, in a week, when November 2023 is posted, it will be the lowest 11-month total for violent crime since at least 2009, and probably way before that.

A nonprofit pledged almost $1 million for police patrols in downtown St. Louis. Did it work?

While I’m encouraged by some of the trends on crime we have been seeing, we’ve got a long way to go. A lot of frustration / fear amongst my neighbors in the CWE. 4 armed robberies this weekend and car break ins are still rampant.

I don’t mean to dismiss fears… but all you can do is take a step back and determine what is St. Louis and what is macro-socioeconomic.

Two dozen daytime robberies in my Chicago neighborhood this Saturday and Sunday alone. Just two years ago we’d see one or two a month.

Certainly understand it’s not unique to St Louis, just think it’s an important perspective to keep in mind as we celebrate YTD crime numbers.

Sometime people forget that decline is just that, a decline. Meaning something happens less often but it still happens, IE robberies, which happen so far this year at a rate of about 10% less than last year but 600 still happned thought Oct.
