I think its more an aesthetic of security rather than actual security.  I would question the justification but the outcome is welcome.  You may see a sell off and redevelopment of smaller or marginally profitable lots since paying an attendant is cost prohibitive for a smaller operation in much of downtown.

I must disagree with you. Having lived in apartment buildings in the city with unsecured lots and secured lots, the difference in the amount of thefts, break-ins, and vandalism is night and day.

The automotive-industrial complex (I totally just made that up) is built entirely upon externalizing the true costs of auto-centrism onto tax payers, among others. It’s nice to see my elected officials pushing back.

Maybe i should have been more clear on what i was referring to as an aesthetic of security.  A 4 foot fence is an aesthetic as its quite easy to hop over.  Its a physical deterrent to stealing a whole car but not much when it comes to smash and grabs.   An attendant IS a physical deterrent to all the crimes of concern.

I will also say aesthetics even including things like proper maintenance, weeding and removal of litter can still deter crime to some degree but they aren't much of a physical deterrent its more about psychology at that point.

Ultimately I think the proposal is a good one and smart politics to boot.  Unless your campaign is funded by 'Big Parking'.

Watched the news report. Hopefully those passes without interference/lobbying. I like it.

My hope is that requiring an address and local phone contact might make some of these shady operators give up and sell their lots.

It’s a shame the city hadn’t done this 30 years ago. (Hmmm, I’m seeing a ‘30 years ago’ trend with my posts today.)

I hope you're right, but my pessimism has me thinking that just because an address and phone number are listed, doesn't mean you'll actually be able to get ahold of anyone, to hypothetically hold them accountable in some way.

As is the case with any laws, enforcement is key. What is the penalty for an unresponsive owner / phone number that just goes to a full voicemail? I agree with Tim. In theory it's a great step but how many times will the city have to cite an unresponsive owner before a lot is "closed" due to violations?

Crime concerns prompt Dot Foods to move trade show from downtown St. Louis to Denver
Citing concerns about safety in downtown St. Louis, one of the region’s biggest private companies is moving its annual trade show to Denver next year.
About 2,800 people are set to attend Dot Food’s event that will be held from June 13-15 at America’s Center, but the company has contracted to hold the event in 2024 and 2025 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, said CEO Dick Tracy. It has been one of the largest conventions and group events in the St. Louis region.

“In 2021, we addressed ongoing concerns about safety in the downtown area with both Explore St. Louis and several of our close hotel and support vendors. What we told them at that time is still true today. We love the St. Louis community. It has so much to offer, which is why we’ve held our company’s major events here for many years. We want to continue to support St. Louis, but we can’t do that at the risk of our employees and business partners’ safety,” Tracy said in an email.

You’d think the reported would ask for examples of how many times their convention attendee was a victim of crime in downtown.

^ They did.  Dot Foods didn’t provide any examples.  Probably because there aren’t any.

Their sales office is in Chesterfield and their HQ is in Mount Sterling…it’s a rural/suburban company.  Me thinks the decision makers are watching too much KMOV.

Still, there are real issues and perceptions about downtown that need to be addressed.

For what it’s worth…Dot is one of my companies biggest customers.  We had our national sales conference downtown last year.  Moved it from St. Charles and we’re coming back.  Could not have gone better, everyone loved it.  Next time we’re thinking of renting the Ultra Club at the MLS stadium for the party instead of busing everyone to the beer garden at AB.  Though everyone was commenting on our awesome architecture on that ride.

I talked to some people who aren’t very happy with Ratcliffe at Explore, they didn’t tell anyone about this, many people feel like if they knew it could have been saved. Her overall performance is being questioned too

In response to questions from the Business Journal, Dot did not cite specific crimes that led to concerns about safety downtown. Tracy said Dot also has moved other events, including its National Business Meeting and other smaller gatherings, out of downtown. In February 2024, the National Business Meeting will be held in St. Charles.

This looks exactly like a Middle Eastern restaurant. And yet another signalized corner of real estate on Washington goes to a chicken place: Pop’s at 14th, this place at Tucker. Harrold’s nearby. How many chicken places are needed in a small radius?

Arch attendance through May is +32% and it will easily pass 1m visitors in July, I mention this because Biz Journal has some real estate guy project 1m visitors for the year….. they’re on pace for 2m

They don’t need to be ignored but they are no more a St Louis corporation than ADM, Caterpillar, John Deere or Shelter Insurance.

Mt Sterling is further north than Quincy IL. It’s not a St Louis company.

My St. Louis HQed company has a 40+ year relationship with Dot.
