If Union Station and Hilton at the Ballpark are having their best years ever, I wonder what Bob O'Laughlin is on about.

Obviously he’s concerned about future growth. But pretty tone def and condescending comments from the mayors mouth piece

I'm pretty sure Tishaura Jones is going to have a really hard time getting re-elected.

Wasn’t O’Laughlin (and Cardinals) involved in thwarting the common sense parking lot security proposal from the BOA last year? A proposal that probably would’ve prevented the few dozen smash and grabs this weekend.

I don’t like his entertainment district proposal. I don’t think Cara’s proposal will be enforceable. I don’t think STL has more police to give to the issue.

Hoping to hear more creative ideas from BOA.

The underlying causes, if addressed, will take years to show results.  We need action NOW!  I've been saying it for awhile.  Increased police presence in entertainment districts on weekends is a must.  Use pandemic funds to get these boots on the streets now.  Organize in these districts to coordinate.  Enforcement is key and any further delay will lead to a further decline in business DT.  This simply can't wait!

This is a common sense approach in most cities, even cities with far less violent crime than St. Louis. You do not see police walking the beat in St. Louis entertainment districts. I've been to a lot of cities where you even see police on horseback or motorcycles patrolling the strip. Then they clear everyone out when the clubs close at 3am. People seem to get the point and if any drama happens it's usually away from the main entertainment district.

100%.  It's maddening that we don't have this type of coverage and visibility here.

There was extra police last weekend on bikes and on foot. Nobody is stupid enough to break into a car with a cop standing next to them.

I get the psychological effect of seeing police and I’m not against that here but it would have marginal effect.   They cannot be at every corner of the 2.5 sq mile area that we consider downtown.  They also won’t be walking the beat at 2:00am when Airbnb fights happen.   They won’t be in a garage when a mentally ill guy (who the judges let go despite multiple pleadings by Gardners office not to, strange people didn’t hear much about it) kills someone.
As I talk to leaders and specifically downtown biz leaders I tell them, sure it’s fine let’s go get more cops but when they patrol nothing actually happens in downtown anyway and we will still get the bad press when those one offs happen.   I guess the actual solution is CA Gore going after the top 100-200 frequent fliers

Btw- when the 2 cars shot at each other at the Murder Shell, the police were right there and chased one of the cars

It’s not only a money issue folks. It’s a personnel issue. There aren’t enough workers for public sector. Transit, trash, streets, police, etc. Most don’t seem to grasp how dire of situation local governments in the United States are in right now.

A generation of strict immigration standards and telling every young person to go to college is finally starting to breakdown, starting from the least desirable jobs.

If you really care about solving issues… give up your corporate WFH job and go get something in public service.

Nope, during the day I plan stuff for the military and in my free time I talk to people

But I do have plans to pitch a well funded downtown citizen lead group, people have expressed interest in funding, just no timeline or time yet

Tons and tons of people downtown yesterday for a conference. Restaurants and hotels packed, would have been even better if there were sports and events going on. Our firm tried out the new Katie’s - the space was very cool and huge and fills a huge void for downtown. We love to see it!

Updated list of what’s opened/is opening vs closed since covid in downtown. Not included are those that opened and closed during covid like Reign and a few others in downtown west since it’s a 1 for 1

Nice to hear that Sliced Pint plans to come back, fingers crossed they pull it off.

Big Daddy's on the Landing should also be added to the closed list

This Aldridge and Spencer combo is going to do wonders for Downtown. I see no reason this won’t pass through the board and be signed by the mayor.

About time!

New efforts to make parking lots in downtown St. Louis safer

Make it 6.5’ with horizontal portions being limited to the top and bottom bracing then it will certainly help stop the issues. Four feet is more ornate than security IMO.
