State control of SLMPD is dead.

Combine county and city circuits could happen but there is 2 weeks left in the session and that seems like a huge thing to get off the ground.  I mean it could totally back fire and Gardner wins the whole thing because remember, STL county is 60-40 democrats and now you’re adding 210,000 registered voters of which 180,000 are democrats.  So Gardner has to beat Bell in the Dem primary and whoever wins that would coast in the general.

I’m not sure I see her beating Bell.

Agreed.  Gardner loses to Bell.  Probably not close.

Another prosecutor (previously on leave) departs, after Kim Gardner throws him under the bus, like all the others.

QUESTION:  Isn't the Hinckley fellow from this article the same lawyer that was serving as a proxy (and seemingly answering most questions for) Tina Pihl?

Make that TWO resignations today:

Chris Desilets, with contempt proceedings brought against him, resigns.

I haven't been able to find a definitive answer, other than "a handful", but how many prosecutors are left at this point?

Everyone is focusing on the violent felonies group, which is reportedly down to 1 prosecutor for ~500 cases.

There are a number of other attorneys assign to misdemeanors, nuisance property, etc., but short of the 30 that Gardner is claiming.

PostMay 01, 2023#133

Per the reporting of KSDK's Christine Byers she has identified the following, dated April 29th:
  • 2 assigned to Violent Felonies.
  • 6 assigned to General Felonies.
  • 6 assigned to Special Victims Unit.
  • 1 assigned to Grand Jury.
  • 1 assigned to White Collar Crimes.
  • 2 assigned to Misdemeanors.

It should be noted that in 2016 there were 58 attorneys in this office, per the Post Dispatch

What would merging the 21st and 22nd circuits require?

The court systems? That's probably not a good idea considering they're two of the busiest circuits in the state.

I don’t know if the count system can be combined. I think what’s being talked about is the Prosecutors offices being combined and have one handle both circuits , and I don’t know if that’s a good idea either.

I think it could be handled effectively under one CA by having there be both a city office and a county office which operate separate from each other and are located in their current buildings. Both offices would have their own managers, with the CA overseeing both.

^ I understood it to work like that.  Much like most municipalities in the county maintain their own municipal prosecutors, the city would do the same.  It just wouldn’t be a judicial circuit any longer.  The city prosecutor would still handle violent crime and whatnot in the city, but the county office could back them up in the event they get overwhelmed.  In theory the city office would have the resources to carry out their duties…that certainly isn’t the case right now. Similar to how the county will step in on murder and other violent cases that take place in some smaller county municipalities.

Very well could be wrong, but I’ve never understood the existing proposal to eliminate the city prosecutor entirely.  I imagine there are plenty of circuits around the country orders of magnitude larger than a combined city/county circuit here would be.  I see no reason it couldn’t be done and in my opinion would be preferable to a state takeover.

^ City does have its own municipal prosecutor too, its the City Law Dept, it handles ordinance violations, traffic tickets etc.

My gosh, at this point I don't know what it is that is actually going to take down Kim, if any of it will at all.

She's currently facing a lawsuit with the Missouri Attorney General that will go to trial.

The Missouri State Auditor is threatening to file a lawsuit on May 15 if records are not produced. These records have been sought since 2021. Records they have received have been heavily redacted.

Multiple judges are threatening contempt charges against her.

She's in nursing school, in violation of her job.

And yet she'll have you believe that the struggles inside her office are in part due to conspiratorial efforts by some of her staff. She's tripled down on blaming her staff for any and all failures within her office.

She wants to go from one job where 1/3rd of her staff leaves, to a job where she actually has an excuse for when 1/3rd of her staff leaves.

hmm.  The narrative is largely against KG but her account makes me question it a bit.  She might be straight up lying of course but it certainly seems like she is giving a honest (from her perspective) account.  The CAs leaving is a big problem and their reviews of her seem less than stellar, but if you were seeing this much pressure how well do you think you might fair in terms of defensiveness, anger, lack of motivation, etc.

So is there an institutional undermining of the office, or is she truly incompetent?  Now I AM hoping for a trial of some kind so that they can establish what is actually true here.

That said the CA needs to function because it has real effects on peoples lives.
