It looks like developers are continuing the redevelopment of the Haneke Building after it was stopped dead in its tracks a couple of years ago. Recently, I've noticed a new paint job on the Macklind facing storefront, and, delightfully, the neon sign is being lit up once again. The building across Macklind, 5400 Southwest Ave, has been under redevelopment since about midway through the summer and I'd assume it will be wrapping up shortly. I'm hoping the plan for the cafe is still ago in the Haneke, but I believe that that falling through was the reason for the project being stalled in the first place. In the next decade, this neighborhood is going to boom.

Actually, yes (just in a crummy form). These were on a LCRA agenda for October 27th, 2020. Comes with this description:
The project consists of the construction of four townhomes in the Southwest Garden neighborhood. The prospective developer is acquiring the property for approximately $7600 and plans on constructing four townhomes at the estimated cost of $670,400. Each townhome will have 2 bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms, and a total of 1000 square feet per unit. Alderwoman Rice wishes to support this project and the staff supports 10 years of tax assurance with an increase of 2% every year (for 10 years).
I'm surprised this made a return because when I messaged Alderwoman Rice last year about this, she said the following in two separate messages (November 17th, 2020)...
I'm sorry this got lost in the election chaos. I've been told, not from the developer, that they're pulling out of this project due to much higher construction costs than anticipated.

It's unfortunately not the first attempt at that LRA property. Was really hopeful about this one, because the developer is local and wanted moderate-income housing for small families, something we're definitely losing in this area. Maybe construction costs will level off here sometime soon.

I think there will always be a market for starter homes.

Looks like the Sav-A-Lot on Southwest is empty. That didn't take long. Any word on what will replace it? Could be a great spot for housing and ground floor retail. I really liked that Sav-A-Lot BTW, and the ones on Loughborough and S. Jefferson.

Two $150k building permit applications submitted for songle family homes at 2732 59th St.  Says unit A and B. The lot is 25 ft wide. Not sure if that means a two-fam that's condo-zed or front and rear separate buildings or what.

There's an appeal to the Board of Adjustment to split 2804 January into two lots. I presume to build a new home on the vacant half.

Some restaurant news in the past week: O’Fashion Donuts has reopened at 5120 Southwest, and GastroPit at 4940 Southwest has finally opened. GastroPit’s neighbor, El Milagro Azteca, is set to open once its liquor license is approved.

Nice to see some activity come back to this corridor… would be great if it could get a road diet.

^Yeah I liked the GastroPit in their previous loc on Shaw. What's the deal with that closed bridge on Southwest and Columbia? That's been closed since the Krewson admin. Think how that hurts the Park Ave coffee shop right there.

The Columbia bridge was built 110 years ago. It was deemed unsafe maybe about 4 years ago. Last I heard, the city had to put replacement on hold due to lack of funds. Seems like a good project to use those Covid and NFL funds for.

Or what if we just put a few bollards on it and opened it to cyclists and pedestrians?

^ yeah, I’ve wondered whether the neighborhood actually prefers it closed. Columbia is pretty pleasant with the current level of traffic. And you can still walk across the bridge today (or at least I do)

Federal funds were allocated for bridge replacement whatever year it was shutdown.  If I recall correctly, replacement will occur in 2024 and the bridge orientation / intersection will change.

For real.  Surprised the location is still open, but glad it still is.  I think they'd be right at home in the little business triangle of Clifton Heights.
