It’s amazing Al’s is still open. I really would love to see that area revitalized into a lively neighborhood but that’s been discussed as nauseam on this forum. Here’s hoping we hear something soon on a renovation at the casino at least

That area has so much potential and ALs is such an amazing piece of old St. Louis. I love it and if only those walls could talk. Even with the condition of the area, some smart marketing would go a long way in driving demand for this place.

City brought in a contractor that had it down into the pile of rubble before 1pm yesterday. Big loss for the area. I'm going to miss seeing it on my way home. Yeah it was a decently sized building and prominent from the highway. Obviously waiting for forensics before definitive conclusion in this case but it seems like the most likely cause of the problem is homeless are breaking into derelict building and starting open fires to stay warm.
Seems like progress on the homeless problem would have downstream benefits including reducing these kinds of tragedies.

^Maybe that'd be a good use of some of that Kroenke money. Get people some shelter, get them stable, and then fix the buildings.

I'd agree but homelessness is regional problem. The region should be supporting the solution so i would not want to put it strictly on the city. It should be funded through a regional organization. It should also be approached with a sustainability mindset. Kronke money is not a deep well and once dry its dry. It can seed good regional efforts but it won't sustain them.

^The entire region got some Kroenke money, not just the city. And a good solution, one which reduces homelessness, could well be self sustaining. Housing homeless people costs a lot up front, but in the long run it's been cheaper in some examples. (Salt Lake was having a great deal of luck with it for a while.) If we've got enough for the initial investment it might well be worth it. Better serve people. Reduce dependence on services. Reduce public safety expenditures. Generally make everyone happier. And if you do it right, it raises the value of the whole area, bringing in additional revenue. Mind you, there's a lot of ifs in here, but it's proved out fairly well in other places.

A sizable building across the tracks was lost in October 2022. What would've made a fine little loft neighborhood has been decimated.

Heck, that's not even the half of it. A whole cold storage complex burned maybe fifteen or twenty years ago. The area from Biddle to O'Fallon and the river to second used to be a solid block of gorgeous industrial buildings as dense as Laclede's Landing. If you go back another ten years before that it was even a part of Laclede's Landing, more or less, since it was solid warehouses from the Ead's Bridge to there, more or less. We've lost so much. 
This was the best building up there and a terrible blow, what could have been an anchor is now rubble. What a kick in the teeth. I know there are efforts to get building owners to seal, clean up or sell their properties, but it is piece meal and neighborhood driven. If there are no neighbors then there is no one to complain. The city needs to take special interest in gems like this one in empty neighborhoods.

At this point, the City needs to consider using Rams funds to clean up and do something with the north riverfront. At this point, invest some smaller dollars, clear brush, trash and anything not salvageable. Make it a green space for now and start prepping it for something better. I know the focus is Chouteau's Landing right now, but this area is a complete embarrassment, especially now that tourists are cruising through here on Viking boats. The City could do better and ignores this area. Maybe the plan is to let all of the buildings get burned out 1st, then address it. Sad way to handle this!

What would it take, I wonder, to get the NPS to annex the NRF all the way to the stan span. Perhaps they would have the resources the help it blossom. GRGs plan is great, but so little progress has been made.

If the land was prepped properly, why would this area not be perfect for light manufacturing and/ or industrial? Seems like something productive could be put there if the City invested in the initial clean-up and site prep. Seems almost too logical.
