^ thanks, I didn't realize the control tower thing.     But also on the flip side wouldn't you want more flights coming into to the airport instead of less if your training?

Getting way off on Lambert but also gets me curious.   I think the National Guard still has facilities just west of the Terminal 1 if not mistaken, even after the Air Guard wing relocated to Indiana (I believe).   I think their was few comments way back on the miss opportunity to relocate and build new Air Wing/National Guard facilities on the other side of Lambert once upon a time..   Curious if any inkling of the existing facilities being moved? or even the wrecking ball?  Seems like an opportunity to change some things up if new Terminal Plan goes forward.

I don’t think Missouri would move much if anything from Rosecrans Air National Guard Base (st.joe) to STL. You can make a case on the margins that having the MO ANG close by it’s eventual parent (if it gets called up to the big show, it would be gained by Air Mobility Command based at Scott) but it’s not a serious argument.

Im guessing nothing gets done with it before the new terminal is completed. It takes long time to get anything like that sold off, assuming that is what you are alluding to. So it is tough to try to plan something for that area in the new terminal plan.

I also have no clue if the government is interested in selling that land off.

db might know more on it.

^ Yep, pretty much the installation and structures tucked between Terminal 1 and what would be the old AA maintenance hanger to the west of Terminal 1 (absolutely positive that is where the old Guard Air Wing was).    Have to agree that probably wishful thinking if things could move quick enough to demo and or relocate any of the existing facilities being used to a new location on site.  Just a shame couldn't all in w a big new clean slate even if it some of it is simply paved over for new on site parking.

^I believe that was MO Air National Guard's 131st "Lindbergh's Own" wing, and they transitioned to the B-2 and moved to Whiteman. Apparently their support is STILL at Jefferson Barracks to this day, which seems darned odd. Hopefully when the B-2 debacle comes to its inevitable close they'll come back home. But for the moment I believe those facilities are rented out to private operators. (There's also a USN facility at the airport, doubtless the last remnants of the former USN Air Station northwest of the field.)

Lufthansa Cargo has St. Louis listed now.

Looks like they will only offer inbound cargo? Maybe I’m reading the chart wrong.

It might just not be updated yet. A bunch of other stations that don't have nonstop have inbound and not outbound listed.

I am sure they are having cargo going the other way also.

Agree. It's very difficult/damn near impossible to imagine a cargo flight heading one way full and one way empty...

It's very reasonable to presume Lufthansa Cargo showing STL means cargo conveyance via belly loads on their passenger flights. Lufthansa Cargo currently has a dedicated freighter fleet of only about a dozen 777s. While I'd love to see these flying between STL and FRA, I can't imagine it for some time. No matter, their furthering cargo between FRA & STL is a great thing, increasing trade and commerce between us. Plus, establishing regular cargo flights between STL & FRA helps secure the route's viability, as air cargo revenues are higher for airlines compared to human passengers, and are potentially more sustainable as business supply chains factor in these flights.

The 777 can hold more than 20 tons of freight in its bellies while simultaneously ferrying a full passenger section. A couple years back, Emirates set a record when they flew 66 tons in the belly of a 777.

Lufthansa.com: Our aircraft bellies: more space for your logistics requirements.

Reminder: St. Louis Lambert International generates aeronautical revenues three main ways: takeoffs, landings, and gating. Takeoffs and landings are assessed by total tonnage of the aircraft. The heavier the aircraft, the more money STL generates.

More cargo -> more revenues -> fees assessed on the airlines decrease -> more flights & bigger aircraft into STL

I think, and I could be wrong, that passenger planes are a set fee based on their weight. Ie 737s are charged X amount, A330s a different amount, etc. Not sure it matters how full or not full they are.

That said cargo coming off of it might be weighed separately. I’m not sure.

Frontier is making Cancun daily year round. It had been backed off to 4x a week a couple months in the fall but they updated it to daily.

The result, Hamm-Niebruegge said, was that Lufthansa, the carrier operating the Frankfurt flight, told airport officials it couldn't keep its gate in Terminal 1, as it did not have time to drop arriving passengers at Terminal 2, then tow to 1

Hamm-Niebruegge said the first three outbound flights to Frankfurt are sold out, and that the first inbound flight to St. Louis has nearly 200 passengers; the flight will utilize a 255-seat Airbus A330.

Further, she said through the end of August, the flight is averaging an 89% load factor, with a "nice mix of business and leisure" travelers.

"They're very happy with that," Hamm-Niebruegge said of Lufthansa.

She added it's possible the frequency of the flight could go up next year if load factors remain strong.

Goes on to list some of the business people that will be on the first flight.

Long list. I'd love to know which of our city leaders has to ride coach.

I was only able to watch on the live cams from Fox 2, but it was nice to see them give her a little water tribute as she arrived at T2.

Flying? Its going to get far far worse

There is a shortage of pilots i because airlines have made it a very low paid crummy job for younger pilots. Ask those senior pilots you know if they would recommend being an airline pilot to a non ex-military pilot. Most of them I have polled say no. It’s gotten so bad that many of these younger pilots have to take second jobs to make ends meet. Not really something you want, the guy about to land the airplane after four hours of flying, but also after eight hours prior holding down the counter at the Qwicky Mart.

It’s always been tough but gotten worse. 25 years ago a friend who was a pilot went through all sorts of crap to get hours. That included crashing on couches/sleeping on floors or in his car to fly banner planes at places like LOTO or the Florida Coast.
