And I get and agree w/ the sentiment that it's unfortunate Clayton and downtown compete but it really isn't unique to STL. There are a lot of major metros that have competing office districts. It's more pronounced here because our office market is thinner than other cities

To add Jbacott comment, I do think a strength or silver lining in this that the two central business districts are tied to together by a growing central corridor with strong transit in metrolink, strong institutions whether it be Wash U, SLU, CORTEX in between, a signature urban park, and so.  Add to the fact that Clayton CBD infill is getting more urban but also limited at some point.   The region will see more stand alone smaller urban type developments in Chesterfield or St Charles but the region has a huge strength in its central core between Downtown & CBD that are tied to together in a lot of ways when are landing successes in ore form or another.  Just need to keep pushing and building on quality of life.

I agree, the central corridor would be an even bigger asset if the region had better growth. There aren't many other regions the size of St. Louis that can offer that polycentric feel. I think St. Louis has definitely failed to leverage the central corridor to it's fullest potential. The planning and coordination is terrible, the infrastructure needs a lot of modernization, and too many people in power act as if the central corridor is finished and doesn't need incentives. The fact is the whole city still needs generous incentives. There are so many gaps and vacant logs, even in the central corridor. Look at Chouteau and Laclede's Landing, prime riverfront property and heavily blighted. What does regional leadership think visitors think of St. Louis when they say those massive blighted areas from the highway?

The central corridor is so far away from completion that I doubt I will see it finished in my lifetime even at the level of current growth. There is so much room for urban development between Grand Center and the river. I'll believe things are getting close when I can walk a bustling retail corridor along Wash Ave from Grand to the Eads Bridge.

I am perfectly fine with continued incentives in the central corridor as long as the projects fit the bigger urban vision for the area.

Granting that it's a smaller street that stops just short of both Grand and the river but Locust is getting remarkably close to scratching that itch. There's still a few holes in need of filling, but I was genuinely surprised by the level of activity along it a few years back.

I haven’t been in the area in a while but last time I was at Locust/Jefferson the SW corner needs alot of work. It’s just ugly and that Ameren substation has got to get screened somehow

You have to appreciate BKD comments about needing more people on its pending merger.   Usually it is the other way around.   BKD also touting on their website that the merger with DHG will create a nationwide top ten service company.  Not sure if the new company will list St. Louis as home, list dual HQ's or how it will work

Not sure how much of bump BKD in numbers it expects on the employee front but I'm sure that like every other company right not they will have a tough time finding everyone they want.  My employer has been trying to find a few people over the last year to fill expanded positions and already working on trying to find more people to replace employees who have already decided to retire this coming year.   Not easy

st-louis-corporate-mergers-acquisitions ... s1450.html

The CEOs of both of the combining firms said the merger isn't about saving costs, but creating a platform for nationwide growth. As a result, BKD — already one of the biggest accounting firms operating in St. Louis — will need more people.

STL Biz Journal: Appliance retailer, with deep ties to region, relocates headquarters outside St. Louis

That retailer is Goedeker's, a.k.a. "Give us a chance, any day but Sunday.” The company went public in the last 2 years (NYSE: GOED) and is currently organized under the name 1847 Goedeker, Inc.
1847 Goedeker Inc. operates an e-commerce platform for appliances and furniture in the United States. It also sells fitness equipment, plumbing fixtures, televisions, outdoor appliances, and patio furniture, as well as commercial appliances for builder and business clients. The company also provides appliance installation services and old appliance removal services. 1847 Goedeker Inc. was founded in 1951 and is based in Saint Charles, Missouri.
This relocation follows the April 2019 acquisition of Goedeker's by 1847 Holdings, a NYC-based conglomerate. 1847 bought Goedeker's for $6.2MM. Then, in June 2020, Goedeker's acquired Appliances Connection, a much larger appliances company, for $210MM. Basically, 1847 first bought Goedeker's, threw a whole bunch of money towards it, then acquired Appliances Connection under the Goedeker's entity for almost 34 times what it paid for buying Goedeker's. 1847 Holdings then spun-off Goedeker's in an August 2020 IPO. During this time, the local Goedeker's relocated from Ballwin to St. Charles and layed off half of its staff.

The relocation makes sense for multiple reasons. 1847 Holdings is based in Manhattan. Appliances Connection was based in Brooklyn, so moving the Goedekers HQ to Brooklyn makes perfect sense. The main reason for all of this is that the business model of the original Goedeker's, being an appliance showroom-based retailer, is being replaced with its operations as an e-commerce store, reducing the costs of having physical retail stores in favor of online stores, and having the final product delivered to the consumer's home. You don't need physical stores to do that. 1847 Holdings wanted an established small brand off of which it could do all of this, and Goedeker's was as good a name to buy as any. While this is the loss of a recent publicly-traded company based in the STL Metro Area, the relocation of 1847 Goedekers in its current form back to NYC has basically been a presumed eventuality, and its impact will not be that significant to the regional economy.

This plan was laid out day 1 to year 5 long time ago and they've moved very quickly through the steps.   Goedekers almost feels like it got picked  from bunch of small store brands out of a hat to be the vessel for this venture.

Looks like a classic pump and dump money making scheme by shady New York venture capital types. Unfortunate that Goedeker's was the chosen victim/vessel.

That was already announced in January and I made I mistake. I meant to say Louisville Kentucky, not Tennessee.
